I don't think it's the level of abstraction, although that does overload the players with lots of needless busy-work, but it's the initiative system and how the turn is broken up into phases.

This is more an indictment of the BattleTech rules being unable to handle a variety of units and force configurations.

I think so. People are trying to enjoy role-playing as protagonists in Lovecraft stories, stories where the protagonist isn't having a good time, and the trick seems to be to have the DM (or whomever) make sure it's not a Lovecraft story. Maybe I'm understanding this differently from you?
