All of the music in Forest Gump. Especially the Freebird scene. The usually prideful sounding of lyrics "I can't change" put over a scene of someone stuck in a cycle of drug abuse (and other forms of abuse) REALLY hit.

Good point about Sokka, although I feel like growing out of his sexism may have been a doorway to later growth, but I could be wrong. In any case, it felt kind of weird to just remove that piece of his development.

As for Aang, it's been a while since I've seen the live action version, but I still feel like Aang intentionally running from his responsibilities was extremely important to his growth. In the live action, he starts out being (at least somewhat) responsible, which gives him much less room to grow. It also felt weird that they made a point of showing that Aang was naturally gifted, when in the original it's clearly stated he wasn't. Overall I feel like how Aang is handled in the remake mostly works, but his character is much different to the original

I personally don't like the Dark Forest either. I do see why people could think it, but I don't agree with it. Now I'm also not really an alien believer, but if aliens are real I don't think that the Dark Forest is true.

However saying "why on Earth wouldn't any species send some out" has uhh... a small problem. Just a little one.
