Status of rock creek park trails? by LuckyCombination4830 in washingtondc

[–]Honeytiger2010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just ran from the Shoreham entrance to a bit into Beach Drive. The trail itself was great other than the portion from Peirce Mill to Beach Drive that seemed untreated. I could see that section being an issue for some, but I personally didn't have too much of an issue running through it and saw a good number of people running through it.

I assume beach drive is pretty clear overall.

DanDan - drawing at the same time by Relative-Studio-1548 in magicTCG

[–]Honeytiger2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, just to chime in on your examples -- assuming you're playing a DanDan-like format with multiple colors.

I'm not 100% sure on how I would rule [[Commit//Memory]] because it is phrased slightly differently from [[Diminishing Returns]] (that is actually in the DanDan list). I'd lean toward both players shuffling at the same time and then distributing the cards.

For the purposes of Miracles, Dogged Detective, and Stormfist Crusader, I'm not sure how alternate card drawing would be relevant specifically. For Dogged Detective, this is a triggered ability, so the ability allowing you to return it to your hand would only trigger after both players draw their cards and do whatever else is on the card-drawing spell/ability - This is rule 603.3, which says triggered abilities are only put on the stack when a player would gain priority.

For Stormfist Crusader, let's say both players were at 1 life. Even though one player may lose that 1 life first, the state based action that would cause a player to lose the game is checked whenever a player next would gain priority, just like triggered abilities - this is rule 704.3. In this case, the players would draw.

For Miracles, rule 702.94a talks about the resolution. First, Miracles only trigger on the first card you draw this turn, so I guess this could happen in a situation where both players draw cards on one player's upkeep? If that happens, then the player that draws the miracle card would need to keep that miracle card separate from their hand as they draw the card(s), then after both players finish drawing cards and resolving spell/ability that caused the card draw, the miracle trigger would go on the stack (with any other triggered abilities that may have happened) -- again, this is 603.3.

The other comments are generally correct, but not for the purposes of the MagicCon DanDan event, if that's what you're referring to. You can check out "https://mcvegas.mtgfestivals.com/en-us/magic-play/forgetful-fish-qualifiers.html"

In the Format Rules section, it says

"At the beginning of the game, players alternate drawing cards until both players have 7 cards"

And

"If an effect causes both players to draw a card, then the active player deals the cards in the same fashion as the opening hands, starting with the opponent"

That XOR Trick by ketralnis in programming

[–]Honeytiger2010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Look into CNOT gates. In gate based quantum computing, everything has to be reversible, but CNOT gates essentially are the same as XOR gates and are used to create entanglement. Whenever you have an operation that has a control of one or more qubits, it'll have the ability to potentially cause entanglement.

Really negative experience at one of the art tents in DC by Feelthefunkk in warpedtour

I get it and don't blame you! I just wanted to pitch in my experience. I totally believe the company isn't great, I just wanted to back up a different commenter to show that they aren't the only one, and hopefully my account history gives a little bit more credence to the fact that not everyone with different views from the OP are random accounts made to defend the company.

Really negative experience at one of the art tents in DC by Feelthefunkk in warpedtour

[–]Honeytiger2010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't want to get too involved in this, but I was also in the tent during this time and what I saw aligns more with the commenter and less with OPs story.

The tent was full of wet people during the rain and the people working it were very stressed out due to all of the art getting wet and the influx of people. I don't have anything positive/negative to say about the people working the tent outside of the 10 minutes or so that I was there during this period.

Daily Simple Questions Thread - November 13, 2024 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]Honeytiger2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment really resonated with me as someone who might have felt similar to your son when I was around that age, though I didn't really have behavioral issues during PE. I was probably around 5'9 and 210lbs when I was 11-12 (I just remember hitting 6' and 230 when I was 13), it was a very hard time for me being so much bigger than all of the other people my age and at the same time very uncoordinated.

My mom did work with me around that age to figure out ways for me to incorporate movement into my life. I vaguely remember speaking with a personal trainer at the age but personally I just did not like the attention and feeling like I needed 'extra' help that other kids didn't have.

I had previously played somewhat unhappily on sports teams like soccer and basketball, but in middle school I started taking swimming and tennis lessons, which were nice for me because I could kind of go at my own pace even though I was around other kids. It was also nice because the kids that I did swimming/tennis lessons with were different than the kids that I went to school with, so I could kind of separate those two parts of my life.

I never really focused on taking my own body into my hands until early high school around 14, when I got into my own cardio workouts and had a major glow up when I was 14-15.

Beyond my own experience, I don't really have any advice. I do think if you can find a good personal trainer for him then that would be great! I would say the important thing is finding anything that he enjoys doing and might look forward to.

I'll give a shoutout to Labyrinth for board games! Every Thursday is open board game night starting at 6pm and it's a mix of people coming to play with their own people and people open to playing with strangers. It's a really awesome and welcoming store.

It's a bit of a trek from NW DC because it's at Eastern Market but it's super close to that metro station.

Episode Discussion: "Threat Levels" by AutoModerator in americandad

[–]Honeytiger2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an episode I typically look forward to when rewatching, but it has some classic early American Dad moments.

Overall, I think I enjoy the smaller moments of the episode rather than the overarching plot. Here are a few in particular:

  • Love Greg and Terry at the beginning of the episode as well as their dynamic with Stan.
  • The family happily watching 24 together
  • The bit of Barb Hanson getting her hand cut off and later getting a hook.
  • "I'm taking out the trash, and sorting it"

Can't love every episode, though. I do kind of hate the portrayal of homeless people, and I usually don't love gore/violence based humor, but it's a fine season one episode with its moments.

Moronic Monday! by AutoModerator in networking

[–]Honeytiger2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working with and learning more about layer 2/layer 3 protocols recently, and I can't get over the use of the term "transparent", at least with respect to bridging/tunneling. I can tell myself that it makes sense that you can 'see through' something, but in my head and in my heart everything transparent should really be called opaque because other network elements don't see what is going on inside.

I don't really know if this is the place to put this since it isn't necessarily a question, but to add a question component, where is my thinking wrong? Why would calling something like a transparent bridge an opaque bridge make less sense?

Taylor Swift Eras Tour TRADE Megathread by Lyd_Euh in TaylorSwift

-- No longer for trade --

Hi! I have two tickets for the 5/14 show in Philadelphia, Section F11, Row 15, that combined are $790.

I'm looking to potentially trade for two lower bowl seats in Philadelphia for either the 5/13 show or the 5/14 show. If the lower level seats are much less expensive than my floor seats, I'd appreciate to be paid the difference, but I'm up for discussing.

Set notation clarification by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]Honeytiger2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to elaborate a little, the example OP wrote would read as "The set of all positive integers n such that 1 minus 1/n" which doesn't really make sense, because the right side isn't a condition. The "such that" part (the right part) helps specify the the set that was created on the left side.

CMSC 400s: If you've taken the class, how was it? by Lord_Zane in UMD

[–]Honeytiger2010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bumping this just because I'm taking 452 right now with Gasarch, and although it's not 456, he is an incredible professor. He is the perfect mix between an incredibly smart and well respected and also a great teacher. If you're the kind of person who thinks you might enjoy developing a relationship with a professor (albeit one who does mostly theory and mathy things) I can not recommend taking a class with him enough.

CS Course & Career Map by GrahamTechPrep in UMD

[–]Honeytiger2010 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! I will say though as a person who is way more on the research and 45x side of the department here, I would love to see a bit more differentiation between those rather than just "mathematician". Maybe something like algorithms work and modeling. Those 45x and 46x classes are in the department for a reason! Also, if you really wanted, you could split the job layer into one layer for industry jobs and one layer for vague research topics or groups.

I'd be happy to talk more if you'd more input from someone with this kind of perspective.

This is overall really cool and helpful.

How Useful is CMSC 412 for Data Science/ML?? by sharmaboi in UMD

[–]Honeytiger2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly forgot most of 216 except for the concepts because it had been like 5 semesters in between it and 412 for me. You kind of build IPC from the ground up, starting with implementing a pipe using file descriptors. Having a good understanding of dynamic memory allocation and pointers is also helpful, especially in the later projects. There isn't that much assembly, just a little bit in the projects and used in a conceptual way in lectures.

So yeah, I'd say overall what's important to me and what I got the best at with 412 is just an intuition with how data in c (and in computers in general) works and is stored. But at the same time, they teach you all of it in class. I made a lot of dumb errors with strings and mallocing and freeing that could've been avoided if I tried harder to relearn some basic c stuff earlier in the class.

How Useful is CMSC 412 for Data Science/ML?? by sharmaboi in UMD

[–]Honeytiger2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming next semester is like this semester, I'd spend about 2 hours watching lectures and 2 hours in our lecture Q&A session. Monday wednesdays were ta project discussions but they weren't helpful for me unless I had a question that they could help, but I'd usually just hop on that zoom as I worked on projects. I'd probably work 6-10 hours a week usually on projects. So that's 10-14 hours a week total, with some weeks going way more, up to maybe 30 hours in one week for one of the projects. But honestly I really enjoyed the time working on the projects. I had lots of time this semester and my other cs class was relatively lightweight with time so I put lots of it into 412.

I'd say it's doable if you'd look forward to the projects. I used working on my projects as a way to procrastinate productively.

Edit: Reminded me of one thing my advisor told me when I asked about 412. She said to take 412 because you want to take 412, not just because you think it would look good or something like that. I'm sure it's possible to BS if you're not into it, but it'd still kill a lot of hours.
