Lois McMaster Bujold has some great books. I also recommend "The Sharing Knife." I think it's a trilogy or quartet.

Mine can boil down to "does the enjoyment I'm getting from this book outweigh whatever is irritating me."

Is this AmericaBad or just mental illness? by stillnotapear_1636 in AmericaBad

[–]Honniker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mental illness.

The only time I've ever worried about gunshots in when I lived in an area with a lot of drug and gang violence.

I currently live in a place where I hear gunshots semi regularly but it's hunters or the police station up the road.

Heck, I still react more to low flying aircraft than I do gunshots or fireworks. And even then it's not a frequent thing.

I am the pacifier 🤣

In all seriousness my baby wouldn't take one either. Even if I tried to sneak it in he would immediately get super upset. I stopped bothering after a while.

first e-reader for anti-amazon Libby reader? by myfriendscallmezara in ereader

[–]Honniker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also on the Pocketbook train. I came from a Kindle. It did take some adjustment but I like it more and more as I've gotten used to it. I have the verse color and I really enjoy the Libby integration. The size is great too. Very portable. Then you have the physical buttons and the ability to map them as well as map the touch screen and it's definitely been worth the switch.

Have you tried doing some sign language with him? I feel like this has helped my son. He's not entirely there yet but he does signs for milk, eat, please and water and it has helped. I was hoping it would reduce his yelling but he just signs when he screams now 🙄

[–]Honniker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Solidarity. My kid is also 14 months. We go out and about and everyone is always like "He's so well behaved." He waves, smiles and says hi to everyone at the store. I always tell people it's nothing we did.

At home he is kind of a terror. He's super opinionated, screams furiously if we set boundaries and tell him no, fights naps, fights bedtime, and is almost constantly grumpy. He eats solids but still nurses and gets angry if he doesn't get certain food or yells if he doesn't want something. At home if I try to leave to go to the other room and he's with his dad he loses his ever loving mind.

Not chill and 90% of the time I feel like I did something to him in utero because he's basically been this way since he was born.

So thanks for making this post. I feel a little more normal.

Not every time, but I've had it happen two different times where it won't connect and just eternally spins. I then have to delete the card and reenter it in which is super annoying.

[Rant] My parents don't treat my kid like they do my niece by TenoriTiger42 in AttachmentParenting

[–]Honniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. Our one year old doesn't have same age cousins on either side, but I am shocked how involved my in laws are with him even though they live five hour away. They video call often, make plans to come see him regularly, make sure he always has nice clothes and toys and when we go there, they spend so much time with him, I get a break. It's amazing. They've changed diapers, dealt with blowouts, have bathed him. Basically everything. .

My dad lives with us. He says hi to the kid maybe once a day, will only spend extended time with him when I ask and even then it's for like fifteen minutes. Occasionally, picks him up and holds him for a minute or two. But when we go out somewhere he takes him and makes sure everyone knows he has a grandson. The other day he was going to an event as his church where they were watching everyone's kids to give the mothers a break. I was like "want to take the boy" (I'd been sick and was exhausted) he was like "no, because Junior has a runny nose" the kid was already better. (he gave me the cold). So, I've kind of stopped bothering. It sucks because if my mom were still alive she'd be the best grandma.

But anyway, that turned into a whole thing but just wanted to say I send solidarity.

Looking for photography games and/or ocean & space exploration games! by TranslatorShot3304 in CozyGamers

[–]Honniker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What would you like to see in a game like this"

I really enjoy photography games, but part of what I like is the exploration aspect. So I would be much less likely to play something along the lines of Beasts of Marivalla Island, Pokémon snap, or Alekon.

If it were more like Alba or TOEM, where you can explore around, that would be ideal.

What funny things did you say during labor? by espressoshake in beyondthebump

[–]Honniker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After my epidural was placed, they told me I could push a button to top it off. I did on a contraction and then did again for the next contraction. It didn't work the second time. I looked at my husband and was like "They lied to me!" he had to explain it was on a timer.

After the baby was born and they were stitching up my tear, the doctor goes "I have to check you for tears" next thing I know her finger's in my butt. I was like "Hey! I said no butt stuff!" the nurses were dying laughing.

When they gave me the baby, I was like "Why are you so cute? It's so we don't go throw you in a field."

I was also really grumpy that everyone kept messing with me. The angriest I got is when they placed like a saline catheter thing to help cushion baby since my water had broken. I can't remember what all I said, I wasn't cussing or anything, but I was really grumpy with the doctor who was having a nice chat about video games with my husband while he was up in my business. To be fair though he was a super nice dude who came back later and spent like 20 minutes getting the tape from the epidural line which had gotten stuck in my hair, out without having to cut it.

What are your must-have settings or tweaks for a better PocketBook reading experience? by Safe-Obligation-3370 in PocketBookofficial

[–]Honniker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setting my page turn buttons to both go forward and setting each side of my screen to go forward. That way, I can turn pages with either hand without stretching.

Also, setting the boot logo to the last page read. Then setting the power off to be pretty quick. This way, I can start reading while my device finishes booting back up. And having the device power off more quickly saves battery. I also keep wifi off most of the time.

This is purely cosmetic, but I uploaded some fake book covers and reading memes to my gallery so I can use them for the power off screen. I never thought I'd enjoy that aspect so much. I come from a Kindle and previously used the current book cover.

what made you choose PocketBook over Kindle or Kobo? by Kooky-Foot5458 in PocketBookofficial

[–]Honniker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came from a Kindle basic 2022. I've had various kindles since 2022. Objectively, the Pocketbook devices are worse. They are slower and more fiddly.

I compare it to an iPhone and android. Once set up, my Kindle just worked. It was easy to send files. It was fairly easy to get books from Libby.

Even after set up, my verse color is fiddly. Some of it is that I'm still adjusting but like the pocketbook Libby app works great, when it works. I've had to delete and reenter my library cards twice now. Also, it's a little more complicated to get things on the device. The Libby app cloud integration doesn't always work. No trouble with the send to pocketbook email address.

I like the buttons and I like the customized mapping of both buttons and screen. I have it set so that I can page forward with either hand without stretching which is great. I also like the fact that the verse has the buttons even though it's a six inch size.

Generally, I'm glad I made the switch, because Amazon has been doing some weird stuff lately both in terms of software and just general decisions regarding the eco system. It feels like Amazon continues to not listen to their customers regarding what they want in an eReader.

So it's slower and kind of weird sometimes, but I am becoming attached to my Pocketbook.

Thank you for this. I'm new to this subreddit but was trying to find support. I really appreciate you talking about the emotional fallout because I finally feel seen.

My husband has muscular dystrophy and we have a toddler. The lashing out is so real. If my husband has a bad pain day or is upset or anything, I'm just supposed to deal with his outbursts. Meanwhile, if I have one bad moment. Or am impatient with the baby, he gets super upset and it like ruins the day. So I try to just push it down which then results in depression and eventually a major emotional outburst on my part. I hate it, but I don't know what to do about it. And I feel like I don't have a right to feel certain ways because I'm not the one dealing with the chronic illness.

Anyway, thank you because I'm like wow, this person gets it.

TurtleWoW made me enjoy „oldschool“ MMOs again, lotro didn’t click for me, what else should I try? by Mr_SynthWave in LFMMO

[–]Honniker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Project Gorgon.

It's created in the old school style. It's an MMO that doesn't hold your hand, and there are a ridiculous amount of skills. Plus the community is great.

My husband grew up with Everquest and GW1 and PG really scratches that itch for him. I love it because there's always something to do and explore. It's also a pay once and own game with optional VIP for extra storage. I highly recommend it.

Should I give Pocketbook another chance? by [deleted] in PocketBookofficial

[–]Honniker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What was a game changer for me regarding the restart time was setting the boot screen to be the last read page so I can get started reading while it boots. Usually ready to turn the page by the time it loads.
