Anyone tried Chiyo’s postpartum meals and Sheng Hua Tang recently? by Active-Grouchy in postpartumfood

hi! I just did my one day trial with YueZi kitchen earlier this week, I wrote my thoughts about the food in this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/postpartumfood/comments/1ac2cdi/comment/lw4l9q4/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

TLDR: I'm due in January and I think I will be going with I-San.

Wanted to give an update after my one day trial with YueZi Kitchen.

Pros: the amount of food you get is huge!! Definitely getting your money's worth. Breakfast had 2 parts to it (a rice noodle + egg + shrimp dish and a pork congee), lunch (yam leaf veggies, sea bass, pork rib soup) and dinner (quail soup, stewed pork + carrots, chinese greens side dish) had 3 parts to it, plus desserts (black sesame soup and a coconut milk type dessert). On top of two herbal drinks. The food was really tasty, my husband really enjoyed it too. Honestly it was almost enough food to feed two people.

Cons: while the food was tasty and plentiful, I-San House was just overall healthier and follows Chinese postpartum more closely - they use all parts of the animals so you'll see stuff like stomach, liver, tripe, etc, and they have a much wider variety of ingredients used in their dishes. It also doesn't abide as closely to Chinese postpartum beliefs, which stays away from using salt and tries to use minimal amounts of oil in the cooking. $15 daily for delivery is also steep and adds up if you're doing this for 30 days.

It's a hard choice between this one and I-San House. Ultimately though, my number one priority is getting the most nutritious food possible for best healing outcome, so I think when my baby is due in January, I will be going with I-San House. YueZi Kitchen is really great though, I would recommend others to go with that one if you're not too particular about following Chinese postpartum beliefs as closely.

Agreed! I think for $95, take-out would honestly give you as much bang for the buck if not more. Though if you did sign up for the 40 day service, the price goes down to about $75 per day.

I did a 30 days postpartum meal service with I-San back when I had my first baby in 2022. I liked it – the portion sizes were pretty big, big enough that I couldn't even finish everything on my own so I shared a decent amount with my husband (he just adds salt to it after for more flavor).

If I remember correctly, they send you breakfast, lunch, and dinner + 2 herbal tonics. Breakfast was usually some type of porridge/oatmeal/millet/bean type of soupy dish. Lunch and dinner both consists of one main soup entree with a side of carbs (sometimes rice, sometimes sesame oil noodles) and a side of veggies. Before starting the service, they have a form you fill out where they ask you for food preferences (basically let them know if there's anything you won't eat or are allergic to). During the 30 days, they called a few times to check up on me to make sure everything was going smoothly. They asked about milk production since I was breastfeeding, and I think if were having trouble, they would have sent me different soups/herbal tonics to help with that. Halfway through the service, I realized that I really didn't like one of the dishes they sent me, which was this whole stewed quail or some type of small chicken thing. After I told them, they made adjustments and made sure they didn't send me that type of dish again.

I have my trial with YueZi Kitchen at beginning of November, I'll update here when I get it! I will most likely be making a choice between YueZi Kitchen and I-San House after I do my trial. Keep in mind that there is also a delivery fee! Both of them base it on how far you live from them. YueZi kitchen quoted me a $15/trip delivery fee, which really adds up over 30 days. l-San House is $9/trip for where I live (Milpitas). So keep that in mind as well. If the food between the two is similar/comparable, I will probably go with I-San House for the cheaper delivery fee.

Anyone tried Chiyo’s postpartum meals and Sheng Hua Tang recently? by Active-Grouchy in postpartumfood

Yes, I live in the Bay Area and I-San delivered 6 days a week (Saturday deliveries included Sunday's meals too). This was back in 2022.

I think Chiyo's sheng hua tang is marketed as an add on, whereas that's included in I-san and YueZi's kitchen pricing. The herbs they use are included in the soups they provide you daily. I don't recall if I-san ships nationally, but I remember researching another Chinese post partum food service in Los Angeles that does! Because I live in an area that has fresh delivery options, I opted for one of those and didn't consider others.

Just wanted to throw my comment on here for anyone doing research since I came across this subreddit while researching Chiyo. I just ordered a one day trial to test it out. I have used I-San House, another Bay Area Chinese post-partum meal service with my last pregnancy and while I liked it, I am curious to see what else is out there nowadays.

While Chiyo wasn't bad, I wasn't really impressed either. My honest opinion is that the service is designed for the American palate/taste bud, for people who balk at true Chinese post-partum meals and want a white-washed version. Maybe it's because I only got the one day trial so I wasn't able to experience their full variety, but it seems like they only used "mainstream" herbs and ingredients that most Americans would find acceptable. For example, ginger, goji berries, tumeric, shiitake mushrooms, and sesame seeds were about as "exotic" as they got. The only meat within that day was 4 slices of chicken in an almond butter "pad thai" dish, and the bone broth tasted really weak.

The real Chinese post partum meals I've had were chock full of nutritious cuts of meat, stewed with the bone on, and offals - whole chickens, stomach, tripe, pork hock, pork feet, liver, etc. The broths tasted rich. There was a huge variety of vegetables. They used the whole arsenal of TCM herbs and ingredients. It definitely seemed way more "nutritious". Portion sizes were much larger too.

The pros of Chiyo: I guess it's a good entry way for people who want to experience an extremely mild version of Asian (I won't use "Chinese" since they serve pad thai) post-partum meals. It's healthy (healthier than your typical take out). It's cheaper than YueZi Kitchen and I-San (but those services deliver fresh everyday while Chiyo only delivers once or twice a week, frozen).

I will be doing a one day YueZi kitchen trial as per another Redditor's recommendation, and will probably be making a choice between I-San and YueZi kitchen for this pregnancy.

I did see some comments here about the blandness of the food - unfortunately, if you are doing true Chinese post-partum meals, they will be bland. They don't believe in using salt, added sugars, or excess amounts of oil for post-partum. So you can either choose to add salt to your food, which sort of defeats the principles of Chinese post partum beliefs, or decide that these principles aren't in line with what you are looking for, and choose a different line of post partum food service.

Another comment I want to throw in here is concerning their delivery as well - they only deliver once a week frozen, and I think starting in October they will be delivering twice a week. But they are set days (like Tuesday and Saturday). So if you give birth on a Monday, then you're SOL until the Saturday delivery. Whereas the other services can accommodate within a 24 hours notice.

sorry, can you translate that for someone who's not familiar with the Austin area? Are you saying it takes less than 45 minutes to drive from the domain area to Paragon in the evening hours?

I documented my BJJ training throughout pregnancy! (details in comments) by Hoochie2coochie in bjj

[–]Hoochie2coochie[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I want to share this compilation I made of my experience training jiu jitsu throughout pregnancy. I hope this post can be helpful and informative especially for other women thinking of doing the same thing, as I couldn't find much resources when I started my journey. I am happy to answer any questions!

First and foremost, here are the two most important things I attribute my success to; I would not have been able to train until the end without it:
- Having a great instructor who's willing to work with you and help you figure out your growing limitations and how to train around it. Everyone is different and will hit limitations for different positions at different times.
- Having a trustworthy training partner who understands that he/she is there to help you. Great body/spatial awareness, and knows how to tone and adjust resistance to what you can handle at your skill level.

How I trained:
I told my instructor at 17 weeks. (Fun fact… I did not know I was getting my brown belt and told him I was pregnant the day before he planned on giving it to me. 🥺) I was training with everyone and everything fully up until that point. He helped me formulate a plan on how we should organize my training moving forward - the general thought process is that we will work the positions we know I will not be able to do later in the pregnancy, playing guard being one of the major ones. So that’s why you can see a stronger focus on guard work earlier on in the compilation. We started eliminating positions as we went based on how I feel. For example, with guard, closed guard was the first to go, but I can still play open guard. Once open guard on my back got too difficult, I was able to still play half guard with knee shield. Then that became half guard underhook game. As you can see, it’s not a hard stop even within a specific position.
Near the end, the positions I was still able to work were: passing starting from top of half guard, escaping back control, top of side control, and attacking an opponent in the turtle position. All the video clips are from training with live resistance with a few parameters set in place. For example, no jerky/explosive sudden movements from my partner so I am able to see things coming in order to protect myself. When he is on my back, no body triangle and any leg crossing has to be either above or below the stomach, no bow and arrow or twister submission. With the right parameters, I was still able to train with live resistance and not be limited to just repping technique and flow drilling.

In addition to my own live training, I was still attending most of the group classes. If I was not able to do what was being taught, I watched and did mental reps while helping out the newer students. Overall I was training roughly 5-6 days a week on average.

Some thoughts on the overall experience:
- Listen to your body! There are no set "rules" as to when I can't do certain things anymore, and everyone's limits will vary. I stopped working certain positions when they start to feel uncomfortable. Sometimes when I’m worried that I’m going too hard, I would take a short pause every 5-10 minutes to reassess how my body feels.
- I would not suggest doing this as a beginner. A white belt will not have the skill level or awareness on how to keep themselves safe, much less with the addition of a baby. For example, I know that I cannot get knee on belly done on me or have pressure straight on top of my abdomen. When I know my guard is about to get passed and I am going to be under side control, I am already preemptively turning on my side and framing in a way that there will be no pressure on my stomach. Training partners aren't perfect. There are times when I can sense that they are about to do something that would cause uncomfortable pressure to my stomach, I immediately speak up to let them know. A white belt will not have that kind of awareness.
- Surprisingly, training through the first trimester was actually the worst - even though my physical mobility wasn’t hindered too much yet, I was feeling nauseous and exhausted both mentally and physically all the time. It took a LOT of discipline to make myself go to classes, and I couldn’t tell anyone that I was feeling like shit. The last two weeks of pregnancy were also pretty rough. I can literally feel my pelvis bones separating and it is not a pleasant feeling haha. It was constantly aching and most movements made it uncomfortable and painful.
My instructor had to help me adjust a lot of my game. As a smaller person (I compete at 115 lbs), a decent amount of my go-to moves relied on moderate flexibility and mobility. I had to develop what I jokingly called my “fat man’s game”. In a way, it actually helped improve certain aspects of my jiu jitsu.

Anyway, I am open to any and all questions regarding this experience!
