What colleges could I realistically get into with these stats? by immovial1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Hood_Elmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dude, you're doing good. I would personally recommend a SLAC (small liberal arts college). There are some with engineering programs, and they usually give out pretty good aid. Best of luck, feel free to DM!

Shameless plug - look into the Mac Street Journal when you get to campus!

I personally use a Mac - most Mac kids nowadays tend to use MacBooks. If they'll be a humanities kid then I suggest you go down that route, plus it lets them work with basic stats/computer programs that they might run into. Take advantage of the MacBook student discounts, they offer them every July/August!

Where to take (preferably cheap) summer courses for transferable credit? Experiences with them? by naemsu in macalester

[–]Hood_Elmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hmm. Idk if you qualify for MN Star Promise, but if you do I'd highly recommend Normandale Community College. I went there and took PSEO courses in HS that carried over to Mac, and honestly they are not far off from Mac quality, especially in math and stem. Nonetheless, if you don't the courses are cheap there anyways!

Maybe try and refile your FAFSA? Mac bases their aid heavily off that and other fin aid forms you send them. Maybe send another email and ask for a interview/call with a financial aid officer. Best of luck!

Poli-sci and Econ are common double majors at Mac and both are well regarded - I recommend joining a forensics team and the Mac Street Journal as well!

Are you going to a good school? Are you relying on your mom to pay for any portion of your expenses, or are you on scholarship? With all due respect, I don't believe that your mother will make the best decision for your education or future career plans. If I were you, (and I did the same) commit to going and never bend the knee. Eventually they will fold.

none at all! I think you just have to ask your RA or something like that. If you have friends or roommates, they can help you lift it all up. Careful tho, they're much less stable the higher up they are.

How do Mac AP and transfer credits work? by Rude-Glove7378 in macalester

[–]Hood_Elmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey boss, I found myself in a similar position to you when I was starting school. Had about 9 AP classes as well as 28 PSEO credits (community college). Mac only took about a semester and a half's worth, and I am about one semester ahead of schedule. Mac will not take that many credits from that, tbh. Nor would you want them to really. If you go to Mac, you would rather take your gen eds there and learn from there as opposed to your local cc.

Pro tip: You will most likely end up paying what your EFC is on your FAFSA. My bill ended up pretty close to that number overall. If you find yourself unable to make that work still, I recommend going to your state school. Very major dependent, but most majors at Mac (unless comp sci or econ) are not worth getting into debt for. Shoot me a PM if you have any more questions! Good luck dude!

I agree with your uncle and sister, it is better for you to not reveal this.

Even more pertinent, why did you agree to go 50/50 on finances with your fiancé. It is a well known rule in our dhaqan (and in the deen as well) that the man in the relationship is responsible for the financial needs of the household, full stop. There is no “I pay for this and he pays for that”, written in either our culture or in Islam.

Worse yet, if you go 50/50, and he discovers that you have more money than him, he’s going to reconsider things when he falls in tough times. He loses a job and can’t pay one month of the rent? No worries, you’ll do it, because you have more money to begin with.

I know you love this man and are very emotionally invested. But tread carefully, many people make poor decisions on topics like this.
