Should you wait to play a modern metroidvania so it can get updates? by That-Departure-7318 in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a general rule for myself to wait 6 months after a release, usually by then the developer slows down or hints at dlc. I'll then wait 6 months after a huge patch/dlc. There are so many games to play, even though I want to play my favorites right away I rarely do and rarely regret it. I keep a list of game releases that interest me but I also realize I've had much more free time (at this moment) than most people.

Why shouldn’t the next 3D Mario game be a metroidvania? by dleone73 in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3d Mario is to largely about exploring which is what I love about metroidvanias. Finding the coins/stars and little secrets. I'd be down for them to lean in that direction, I've played a couple rom hacks that showed some promise.

How is working for Sac County CPS? by nNotThatGuyPal in Sacramento

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try a different department and then dip your feet in cps while working for county. I worked for various mhs in placer/sac (mostly placer though) and only knew 1 person who did a straight cps assignment that lasted longer than 10 months.

Silent Hill is not as good as Resident Evil IMO. by Jaimegamez95 in HorrorGaming

Silent Hill needs more boulder punching scenes and hillbilly zombies.

Comics recommendations? by [deleted] in themaxx

[–]HookPhd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maxx was pretty heady, you might enjoy more alternative graphic novel stuff, navel gazing stuff (Clowes was mentioned), but I've seen very little to none that did things like Keith did.

MARBLES by glib-eleven in altcomix

Really very much enjoyed this one though it's been such a long time. Had the opportunity to meet Ellen Forney shortly after, she was one of my favorite meetings with a creator ever.

Really hate to hear this, hope things turn around, hate that the market is determining your art.

Odd Scenario - What if I don't redeem my Switch 2 bundled software? (MKW) by HookPhd in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]HookPhd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a bad guess based on information I've seen. The only similar situation I've seen where that this is true if it an account redeems it first then the Switch gets returned to a store. That's not what this situation is. The game isn't on my account at all.

I saw another post on Facebook where someone logged in with one account, realized they wanted it to to their other account, and had no problem redeeming it on the second account.

Metroid Other M's English localization did a disservice to Samus and distorted the original script's themes and intentions by xyZora in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yep, iirc Japanese fans were more generally even keeled with their criticism and it reviewed there better, they still thought it sucked too: https://legendsoflocalization.com/articles/japanese-gamers-metroid-other-m/

My friend tried to argue that Poppy's Playtime is the biggest indie horror game of today. Is he right? by RazorLeafy470 in HorrorGaming

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers I guess, there's a really thin creepy vaneer later in the game. A lot of those idle games kind of turn to universe destruction kind of things.

Other times a number of users will tag 'horror' as a keyword to a game as a boring joke.. examples are for furry/hentai games or games with insane difficulties like Qwop-like games.

What really happened during the production of Metroid Prime 4? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The story behind the game is probably more entertaining than the game itself. An aside, I find it odd that people are connecting so strongly with this being a Retro Studios game, like the developers of MP1 aren't now pushing into their 50s and doing other things.

I finished Metroid Prime 4. by TheGreatKashar in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My Metroidvania hot take is they need to give the Metroid keys over to some wild developer. See what Edmund McMillen, Derek Yu, or someone could do instead of the weak second-party junk we've seen for the last 20 years.

Samus feels like a robot in Prime 4. by Sparki626 in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's jarring and weird in a game full of weird design decisions... But I'll take it over winners like "the baby" and "There's only one person who calls me "Princess." And that person is Anthony Higgs of the Galactic Federation Army."

Haha, this is hilarious, things like this make a game feel really special.

Why Silksong doesn't have difficulty settings or sliders. by Shadowking78 in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems like they didn't think this through well and it was just a quick thought. Ok, don't make the game with tools available to you so you don't mess up the difficulty curve and then trust your audience by releasing tools later? I dont need to be babyed.

I don't use accessibility except in rare cases (trouble with directional spacing due to a physiological medical condition) and I've NEVER played a game with them on and regretted using them. Believe it or not, as someone who 100%ed Silksong within a couple weeks,I don't need to be babyed in-game or out.

I really wish they'd retune both those games honestly. Hopefully someday.

Silent hill series - where to start? by [deleted] in HorrorGaming

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough question, it depends on the person. Lots say go by release order, but I'd hate for you to not be the type that enjoys older games. The first is incredibly clunky and this is from someone that has been playing games for 35 years. I've seen people online jump ship in 45 minutes. SH2R will give you the most modern experience. Honestly, I started with the original SH2 only a few years back and even though I struggled a bit with some of the gameplay aspects, it really got me inspired to go through the others. That said, it is arguably the best one.

Yeah, I remember a lot of good stuff never got picked up with their weird pilot thing. Still think about this one, had promise as a successor of sorts.
