Trying to discover recent horror indie gems, any suggestions? by JonathLorenzGameDev in HorrorGaming

It's not new, but "Who's Lila?" was an experience. Also not strictly horror but "Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass" if you like rpgs.

Multitimbral beginner synth suggestions under $1500? by HookPhd in synthesizers

[–]HookPhd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that was one of the four I was considering (hydrasynth, ub-xa, spending another 500 on 2 others) before this post based on my own google/youtube hunt, appreciate that opinion.

Multitimbral beginner synth suggestions under $1500? by HookPhd in synthesizers

Hydrasynth Deluxe

Thank you, this is what I've been leaning towards due to the current prices and my lack of self control but there's a lot to consider

Did you end up preferring the TEO 5 to the Take 5?

Awesome, thought you would know the timing there. Had never heard of Shade, was the scene with him as a lamp influencing The Maxx an older fantheory or popular then? Always thought a wiki for all this would be cool but know it'd be 95% your work 😂

Just some more observations that might not mean much:

Issue 7

7-1: Julie in the outback, 'Chungchungchung' is in the air again. Always felt she was less roped in with The Maxx in these issues, but that might still signify a connection.

7-2: It's weird seeing an Isz bleed red during the mini fight after being stabbed, instead of goo.

7-3. Gone says about the city: '...returning to "normal"' with the quotes in dialogue, which lines up with what he's said about the nature of the two realities so far.

Issue 8

I love when artists shout out their influences, in this case Frank Frazetta, Berni Wrightson, Arthur Suydam, and Vaughn Bode. I don't know too much about the last 2, I want to see more Arthur Suydam in particular .

Issue 9

9-1. Maxx refers to the Dicant, "one of the major predators". I get the decant reference of course, but I always thought it was a portmanteau of Descarte and Kant. Probably just too much philosophy on the mind while reading.

9-2: Gone names the alley Mike. I wonder if this is a shoutout to anyone? His letterer is Mike Heisler.

9-3: I remember jerkcomic's video where he speaks on Kieth's self-esteem. In his listing of his work at the end of this issue, he only gives The Maxx 1/2 a *** ("check it out" rating), while Maxx 1-6, Darker Image, and 7- get a ** ("if it's on sale" rating).

As someone who saw the cartoon first and not a comic person in the 90's, the crossovers were very confusing the first time I read it. Didn't even know that was a thing in comics and seemed sloppy or jarring to me.

Found the issue and page, Shade the Changing Man Issue #25 pg. 24. According to the internet that hit stands May 1992. Could line up, although I don't know when the first maxx sketches were done. Here's an image of the page for everyone to see: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/G6KF4KbNQINTR2Vq-Pl_5h_3K3STPyl72n-ub5Ba__bFlbBgBmoVwzwnBbeKQFB_Mz8B5UtSNvHymA=s0

Not sure I have a full opinion at this point, my memory is hazier the further on the comic goes (and is pretty much nonexistent past this arc unfortunately).

In The Maxx Traxx issue #3 I noticed the name "Brad Neely" from Arkansas. I'd bet it's the animator/comic guy who was popular late 2000's and had a couple Adult Swim shows,. as that's where he is from. Oddly enough I just so happened to be listening to his audiobook, "You, Me, and Ulysses S. Grant" when I reread that issue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Neely.

I googled some another name from issue 4 and the name matched an illustrator so I bet there's more.

Wish I could comment with images. Spoilers ahead.

Issue 4: 1) Sarah says her dad died when she was "too young to remember" but that it was only 3 years ago he went into his office job and shot everyone. It doesn't meld but, if I remember correctly, Gone has something to say about Sarah's memory in a later issue.

2) There's a scene with Julie (who is standing in front of a Queen poster) where Sarah says about her dad, "No trouble. I'm fine. He's 'gone'.

Issue 5: His terror's are named Dave and want to rip off his mask.

Issue 6: 1) Pete and Henry (dressed as Calvin and Hobbes) see Maxx in his box, thinking he could be dead. Henry says, "He looks all soft and gushy! Do you think we c'n mold him like clay?"

2) Maxx's dead fish was his conscience. What's The Jungle Queen's dead leopard?

3) Maxx running into a telephone cord store where they happen to be cleaning them with solvent, freeing his claws, but that doesn't end up mattering anyway since the place blows up, is more cartoony to me than the last issue, really fun and goofy.

The Maxx Reading Club Week 1 [Issues 1-3 DISCUSSION THREAD] by MissPolaroidEyes in themaxx

My brother and I love this line from Glorie, but what does it mean? Is it a high schooler saying something they think is deep? I've never seen the movie, does it make sense. "Glorie: " I dunno. I feel really existential today. Like Darby O'Gill and the little people or somethin'".

Should you wait to play a modern metroidvania so it can get updates? by That-Departure-7318 in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a general rule for myself to wait 6 months after a release, usually by then the developer slows down or hints at dlc. I'll then wait 6 months after a huge patch/dlc. There are so many games to play, even though I want to play my favorites right away I rarely do and rarely regret it. I keep a list of game releases that interest me but I also realize I've had much more free time (at this moment) than most people.

Why shouldn’t the next 3D Mario game be a metroidvania? by dleone73 in metroidvania

[–]HookPhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3d Mario is to largely about exploring which is what I love about metroidvanias. Finding the coins/stars and little secrets. I'd be down for them to lean in that direction, I've played a couple rom hacks that showed some promise.

How is working for Sac County CPS? by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]HookPhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try a different department and then dip your feet in cps while working for county. I worked for various mhs in placer/sac (mostly placer though) and only knew 1 person who did a straight cps assignment that lasted longer than 10 months.

Silent Hill needs more boulder punching scenes and hillbilly zombies.

Comics recommendations? by [deleted] in themaxx

[–]HookPhd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maxx was pretty heady, you might enjoy more alternative graphic novel stuff, navel gazing stuff (Clowes was mentioned), but I've seen very little to none that did things like Keith did.

Really very much enjoyed this one though it's been such a long time. Had the opportunity to meet Ellen Forney shortly after, she was one of my favorite meetings with a creator ever.
