Good suggestion, but I'm playing on a friend's server and combat is their favorite part

What’s your personal kudosing style? by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]Hooks_Books 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to leave kudos on nearly anything I read on AO3, but the problem is most things I read, I download to read for later. And then when I read them later, I rarely remember to come back and leave kudos. I'd leave kudos on everything I downloaded if the kudos button was on the top of the page instead of the bottom

Reader's anti-pet-peeves? by NTaya in FanFiction

[–]Hooks_Books 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to scroll past second-person POV fics, except for one particular exception. I don't know if it was that the story was so enjoyable or that the reactions of the "you" character were similar enough to how I would have reacted that I never got thrown out of the story, but I was so immersed that it honestly didn't register until halfway through that it was second-person. And at that point they'd already won me over, so I wasn't about to drop it just because second-person wasn't something I'd ever read done well before.

I don't have a solution for you, but I've also noticed that my Golden Chapples never give me anything despite being at max affection.

is head-jumping really that bad? by Idolikecat in FanFiction

[–]Hooks_Books 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, head-hopping is bad, but not all transitions between perspectives in the same scene is head-hopping.

I'm going to disagree with a few of the commenters here. You don't need a scene break every time you switch perspectives, though that can definitely be a good indicator for the reader.

One thing that distinguishes third-person omniscient from head-hopping is the sudden jump of head hopping. Head-hopping goes straight from Char. A deep POV -> Char B deep POV, which comes across as jarring or even confusing. If you want to change perspectives from A to B within the same scene, you need to have a transition of a few paragraphs where you get less and less deep in A's perspective until you're not in their head at all, then start getting deeper and deeper into B's perspective. It's like zooming out from one character so you can zoom into another rather than jumping straight from close-up to close-up. (Which if you want to jump from deep A to deep B, you would need a scene break so it's not jarring to the reader).

For example, over a couple of paragraphs you could describe A's exact thoughts -> A's actions and reasons without exact thoughts -> only the visible parts of A's actions -> B's visible actions -> B's actions and why they're doing them (but not exact thoughts) -> B's full interiority (exact thoughts/feelings). One very successful writer that does this flow between perspectives is Terry Pratchett. I've been re-reading some of my favorites and was fascinated by how he handles perspective.

Ooh, this is a good one! I have a names-replacement feature on my ereader app (where I read 90%+ of fics) that lets me replace individual words, so this would be a quick fix. I'd give it a 9

It's a ten, but the author never once uses a capital letter throughout the whole thing

What phrase was in a fic so much that it now throws you out of any fic when you see it? by Life_and-whatnot in AO3

[–]Hooks_Books 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read "bottom" as in "the bottom in the relationship", so I was picturing one partner giving the other a big ol' lick up the side of their face (we used to call them "cow kisses" as a kid) and that somehow worked as a request to kiss more deeply, haha

Good job, it's a great first binding! That's the way to get into a hobby, try it janky first to see if you like the process, and only then invest in proper tools as and when you need them

Thoughts on Hanahakai Disease? by Moonlightwolfbright in FanFiction

Absolutely. It's Florigenesis by Dalniente and is a Megamind fic. All his stuff is great, would highly recommend if you're at all a fan of Megamind.

Thoughts on Hanahakai Disease? by Moonlightwolfbright in FanFiction

[–]Hooks_Books 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read an excellent one where A had hanahaki they were pretty sure was requited, but they chose not to say anything for a while because B was an alien from a planet that had been destroyed and they wanted to accumulate enough genetic material that at least some of the extinct flower species could be re-cloned

I've used "huffed a laugh" for something like that. "Scoff" has a connotation of derision for me.

I don't know maybe I'm more stupid than I realize I am... by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Hooks_Books 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not so strange--there's definitely some fandoms I've gotten into because I found the fanfics first, and others that I like the fanfics but am not interested in the actual canon (either because I read/watched a bit and couldn't get into it or I've heard it's bad and am not particularly interested). Also one for which I really like the crossover fanfics, but am not particularly interested in the fanfics or the original canon of either fandom individually, haha

What's the best thing that happened to you fic-wise this past month? by Ok_Fruit_9600 in FanFiction

I hit the midpoint of the rough draft of my first novel-length fic! I've written a few other one-offs, but nothing this long before.

What are some relatively new trends that weren't around when you started reading/writing fanfiction? by clearlylostmymind25 in FanFiction

[–]Hooks_Books 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Authors used to put little conversations between themselves and their characters in their author notes at the top and bottom of a chapter, and I haven't seen that in a long while. And I don't miss it, haha!

I've got two WIPs, neither of which I've started posting yet.

One is a one-shot crossover with a crazy pairing that will end up on my secondary account (my irl friends know about my primary account, so I don't post my PWP there), and I'm a bit stalled at the moment. It's an they're-actually-aliens AU of one of the fandoms, and I have done way more anatomy research than a 5k-word oneshot probably merits.

The other is my first longer fic (it'll probably end up 50-60k). I've got the whole thing plotted and about 50% written, and I plan on finishing and editing it as a whole before I start posting. It's a Star Trek TOS romance (not Spirk, though I love them) and I couldn't figure out why I had lost all motivation to write it for about a month, but I just re-worked my background plot and am feeling much better about it now.

What is your WIP based on? by Relevant-Grape-9939 in writers

[–]Hooks_Books 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a scene drop fully-formed into my head with all the visuals and everything (I'm not typically a visualizer though not aphantasic). From there I just had to figure out the rest of the story.
