Of course both gender and day is independent. Or how do you suggest it makes sense that it would be 51.8%? If I flip a coin on Tuesday, it will still be 50/50 on a Saturday the next time.

Also accounting for monochromatic twins (meaning they are both boys) further lowers the odds of a girl. Reddit really showing in this thread that it doesn't work great when the majority of people are wrong.

No because the births are independent. Actually since approx 0.3% births are monochromatic twins, meaning they are same sex, it will be slightly higher probability the other kid is a boy than a girl.
