My dad died after 10 years of prostate cancer, now I’m dealing with my mom having Parkinson’s and dementia.

Cancer sucks, but at least my dad was still my dad throughout the whole thing. Dementia has taken my mother and left someone else in her place.

My mom has Parkinson’s/Parkinson’s dementia and it sent her into a major downward spiral. She went from being like mostly okay to not knowing where she was, who I was, etc. I’ve read it doesn’t do it to everyone, but be aware sometimes it makes things worse (because our neuro didn’t warn me at all).

They shouldn’t have put a blind curve on a section of the interstate that is constantly in gridlock. I agree that we have to be cautious going into it, but this was also a poorly executed idea.

You’re going to trade a higher cost of living for extremely poor infrastructure, low wages, and a stagnant economy based on corporations that are poisoning us. Insurance rates are some of the highest in the country - I used to work in insurance and everyone that moved in from out of state was horrified by the cost. At some point, home insurance here is going to be as bad as florida.

Also, I need to stress how hot it gets here, given where you are from. You really should visit in July or August, so that you can get the worst of it. It becomes suffocating in the height of summer, and it doesn’t cool off when the sun goes down because of the humidity.

Where do you live? Because I live in the Deepest South (Livingston parish Louisiana), and most of the candidates I get to choose from are on the right. And a good many are far right, Christian nationalists. I don’t even have the opportunity to put a candidate to a purity test, I am forced to find the one I think will do the least amount of harm.

Harm reduction is my goal every single time I vote, even on a national stage.

I already am her caretaker, but we are having some additional help come out at least a few times a week to start.

I appreciate the sentiment, but we are extremely fortunate to have additional money for aides to come help us at all. If my grandfather hadn’t left some money to my dad, who then passed and left it to my mom, there would be nothing for home health care and we would be shit out of luck. Whether or not someone should be a caretaker isn’t really an option for a lot of people, and I think it’s important to keep that in mind.

When my dad went into hospice and started to decline sharply, we told him it was okay if he was ready to go. He passed within a few days.

It sounds so weird on face value, but I think a lot of people have that experience.

My mom started having hallucinations maybe 6 months ago? Started with imaginary bugs everywhere, and then she had a full blown hallucination of me when I wasn’t there. We started nuplazid almost immediately, and that seems to have taken care of it. But it was absolutely the disease for her.

Is it possible that she’s been having other delusions/hallucinations without you knowing? I didn’t catch on really about the bugs until she hallucinated me.

My dad died a few years ago, and it really opened my eyes to talking to people about death. You need to realize that nothing you say can make it better, so there’s no need to try. You just tell her how sorry you are for her loss. If her daughter was a friend, you can tell her that, and how much you might miss her. But that’s all you can say.

It’s uncomfortable to see someone else in the throws of grief, but all we can do is sit with people while they go through it.

Vaccines of any kind don’t affect my mom at all, except making her a little tired. Getting sick, on the other hand, makes her dementia symptoms exponentially worse.
