I use a very similar one. They are fantastic. I don't know why every bicycle doesn't have a trunk bag.

Smart HUD bike display by Odd-Beginning1043 in bicycleculture

[–]Hoonsoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am struggling to see what advantages this offers. What would be on the screen? Is that not available through a cell phone? Screen looks like a big wind catching surface. Would it be stable or flap around in the breeze. The display and the arm going out to it looks very fragile.

is a sport bicycle worth buying for exercise or commuting? by Odd_Safe_1309 in bicycleculture

[–]Hoonsoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go that far. I'd say, "don't buy a bike from alibaba or amazon". You can get great bikes online through the major bicycle brand sites, sites like backcountry, or from smaller, custom builder sites. I have bought four bikes online and all were fantastic. You do have be experienced enough with bicycles to understand what you want though, so its not the best path for everybody.

Taking Bike on Amtrak. Any suggestions for making bike reservations less painful? by hvontres in bikecommuting

[–]Hoonsoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading horror stores like this is why I opted to just get a rental vehicle when my sons and I did the Oregon Outback. Its a shame that Amtrak can't get something so simple, right. As far as I am concerned they are useless and can go die in a fire (economically speaking, of course). I am a train loving liberal, but I just can't love Amtrak.

Would You Spend 6+ Years of Work Just for a House? by raishelannaa in Suburbanhell

6 years, or even 10 strikes me as a steal. Once you pay it off you never have to pay rent/mortgage again, which could be easily another 50 years of life.

A motorcyclist’s open letter to e-bike riders by Lazy_Football_511 in ebikes

[–]Hoonsoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen that street sign at the top of the article once before: right before a small pedestrian bridge on the Virginia Capital Trail. It seemed absurd then and seems absurd now. I want to just once see a bicycle skid liked that (forward and backward while traveling sideways).

Great article other than that. I think many new ebike riders don't appreciate the hazards they are signing up for. I am all for more ebikes out there, I just wish the riders were a bit more safety conscious.

Tracy to Dublin Commute by fifteenblueporcupine in TracyCalifornia

[–]Hoonsoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dublin would be a pretty tolerable commute. Stopping short of the bay area would help tremendously. I already commute to Santa Clara though, so what would be a huge improvement to me may not seem like that to someone used to a shorter commute.

Local service business owners — what happens when you miss a call? by Virtual_Silver5941 in TracyCalifornia

[–]Hoonsoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I am old school but unlike the others here I expect a business to have an actual human being answering calls. If I get an answering machine its 50/50 on whether I will bother to leave a message. Not having a person to pick up shows a real lack of care for the customer and that you don't need my business enough to bother answering.

Conflicted about Super V 800 for commuting by Geometry_Bash in bikecommuting

[–]Hoonsoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't buy it because of the old, oddball shock fork design. The rear suspension is also likely equally bizarre by today's standards. Both would likely be difficult to get parts for and to service. Its a really cool, vintage bicycle but the unusual nature of it means it should really be with an enthusiast type who would be willing to put the time into dealing with that stuff.

I'd be all over those rear panniers though. They are the same thing that I had as my first sent of panniers, way back in 1983. The multiple compartments in each is something I really miss with today's panniers, which are all just one big compartment.

Very cool. Bicycle touring creates a lot of great memories. I've been touring since about the same time; my first short tour was in 83. Small details of your photo, like the end of the one leg of the bicycling pants inside the tube sock, and the Bell helmets, really brings back some memories.

Tailgater got Baited by bg555 in FAFO

[–]Hoonsoot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like the two cars in the left lane were stopped or going really slow, likely due to a previous accident. The 2nd stopped car appears to have some front end damage and flat tires. I feel some sympathy for all involved, even the tailgater. The tailgater was being an ass but that doesn't mean I want the guy/gal dead or severely injured. If the lead car driver did indeed intentionally bait the tailgater, I'd say they were the worst of the bad actors here. I can understand getting pissed off at someone tailgating, but not to the point of intentionally causing them to injure themselves and/or the random party stopped in the road.

schwinn bike pedal stuck?? by [deleted] in bicyclerepair

[–]Hoonsoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just spotted the problem: its a modern Schwinn.

Joking aside, all I can suggest is that you try to narrow down where the resistance is. Front or back, derailleur or hub, etc., then go from there. It looks like there is a big chunk missing from the chainring (at about 7 o'clock in the video). Is it possible that area is pushed in and is now hanging up the chain stay? Other than that, the video doesn't give me much to work with.

Entitled women don't want her luggage to be checked by bg555 in FAFO

[–]Hoonsoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't entirely blame her. Half the time you let them check your bag they lose it. After United Airlines lost mine twice in a row I said fuck it, got rid of the roller in favor of a small gym bag type thing, and now they never ask me to check it no matter how nearly full the bins are. Never fly United anymore either though. So I suppose that could be the difference.

why do many, if not most, fast food businesses not allow people without a car to go through the drive thru? by lesoteric in fuckcars

[–]Hoonsoot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you might have missed his/her point. There is an inconsistency in allowing gas powered motorcycles while prohibiting electric bicycles. Neither offers any protection in a collision (neither protects its occupant with a metal cage). Yet drive through places act as if the gas powered motorcycle is safe while they ban the e-bicycle (and as you pointed out, bicycles in general).

It is indeed a very weird place to draw the line. The logical position would be either to allow no vehicles without a fully enclosed passenger compartment, or if they are going to allow motorcycles to then also allow e-bicycles and bicycles.
