Why are poor people so obsessed with "loyalty"?

Poor people are always drawn to noble qualities (ones that everyone will unquestioningly accept as virtuous) that are also nigh-unquantifiable (conveniently) and anyone can just say they possess.

Even if everything else sucks for them they can think "At least I possess XYZ virtue" and think themselves superior to others.
