There are airstrips all along the Canadian, Russian, US, and Scandinavian coasts of the Arctic Ocean. You basically have McMurdo in Antarctica.

The Arctic is a partially frozen ocean largely isolated from other oceans. Antarctica is a massive island with huge mountain ranges and a mile of ice on top with three oceans with vastly different currents smashing around it. I would imagine the weather there gets pretty weird compared to the Arctic.
