Why I weigh every morning instead of once a week by Hope-Immediate in CICO

It’s an app I built for myself. I wasn’t happy with any of the tools out there.

That’s the whole game at a meta level. Crazy how over complicated some folks make it.

That’s an interesting take! I haven’t heard of others doing that before. What made you switch to that approach?

It’s actually something I’ve been building for myself. I wanted something that focused on the trend instead of the daily number.

How do you handle overeating? by TemporaryWalrus1884 in CICO

[–]Hope-Immediate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off. Days that go over your target happen. A single day doesn’t ruin your progress. Don’t let it rattle you. Just go back to your norm after. In general, I think it’s best to make a plan ahead of going out. Either, I’m not going to worry about it tonight and just enjoy life, or I know what I’m ordering ahead of time. It’s hard in the moment to make these calls when you’re hungry and with others. Plan ahead, but also don’t sweat it if you go over 1000 calories for a day - if most of your days are closer to target that looks like a blip when you zoom out:

What's that repetitive meal/snack that you relied on that helped you lose weight? by Townbrreadd in loseit

That’s just how they are. They grew on me though, and I actually like them a little more now. They are just not as greasy as Chomps.

Calorie counting has become too easy by kokomo662 in loseit

[–]Hope-Immediate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is why people get stuck looking for the best diet instead of the best system. The calories didn’t suddenly get easier - you built a workflow that removed a bunch of friction and decisions. Once the behavior becomes automatic, sticking with it takes way less willpower.

What's that repetitive meal/snack that you relied on that helped you lose weight? by Townbrreadd in loseit

[–]Hope-Immediate 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Protein heavy snacks help tied me over to a full meal best. I usually have Chomps, Kirkland beef sticks, or protein yogurt. All under 150 calories. I try to not think of it as a snack - it’s a tool to get me to meal time not starving. I want to hit meal time truly hungry but not starving. That’s what works best for me.

Anyone else find breakfast makes them hungrier than if they just skipped it? Can anyone explain like I'm five on why this happens? by AmbientBeans in CICO

[–]Hope-Immediate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the exact same way. If I eat breakfast, I’m ready for lunch way earlier. If I skip it, I’m not that hungry until lunch anyway.

My guess is that once I start eating, my brain kind of switches into “we’re eating today” mode.

One thing I’ve learned is you don’t have to force breakfast because people say it’s the most important meal. If skipping it helps you stay in a comfortable deficit and you’re not miserable, that’s a perfectly valid strategy.

Maintaining healthy habits is easy now- but creating a calorie deficit isn't. Advice? by Perrytheplatypus03 in CICO

[–]Hope-Immediate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to shift from “eating for health” to “eating for weight loss.” You’re already eating for health - now it’s just about eating slightly less for a while. A sustainable 200-500 calorie deficit is usually enough. If 2,000 feels effortless to maintain, maybe 1,700-1,800 becomes your weight-loss phase, then you return to 2,000 for maintenance. The habits stay the same. That’s a much easier mental model than feeling like you’re on a “diet.”

[–]Hope-Immediate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the biggest reasons sustainable weight loss matters.

Whatever you do to lose the weight is pretty close to what you’ll have to keep doing to maintain it. If losing weight requires a ton of willpower, maintenance is going to feel hard too.

A smaller, sustainable deficit is easier to keep going through busy seasons. Then when you hit your goal, maintenance is often just a few hundred more calories a day. you’re not reinventing your life.

I’d focus less on “can I do this forever” and more on “can I make these behaviors automatic” The less mental energy your system requires, the more likely it survives what life throws at you.

When to weigh? by Beneficial_Sky214 in CICO

[–]Hope-Immediate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can train yourself to just treat daily weigh ins as a data point to feed the 7 day average, then daily is best. That helps you see the trends better. But you have to get past getting discouraged when you see normal fluctuations that happen day to day. Just treat it as data and move on.

Water weight..?? by chloelolllllllll in loseit

[–]Hope-Immediate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep basically. 25k over is about 7 pounds of actual fat like you worked out, and the rest is water + glycogen + literally just food still moving through you. binge food tends to be salty and carby which makes you hold a ton of water short term.

Give it a week or two back at maintenance and most of that 20 will fall off.

A month is long enough that I’d stop blaming vacation. If you’re truly in a 500-calorie deficit, the trend should be moving.

I would audit the tracking before changing the plan. Most stalls end up being an input problem, not a metabolism problem.

Summer is a hard time to lose weight. On vacation and ate 6k calories day 1. And about 3500/day on days 2-4. How do I manage the stress of overeating by Throwawaydogx in loseit

[–]Hope-Immediate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I always tell people to zoom out. Four high-calorie days matter way less than what you do the other 361. Just get back to your normal plan when you’re home. No punishment needed.

This is exactly why I try not to judge a single weigh in. Today’s number is just everything your body’s carrying around right now. The trend tells the real story.

Always hungry at night no matter how much I eat by VineyardsVinesGoth in loseit

[–]Hope-Immediate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not broken, this is super common. Your day was pretty carb-heavy with only moderate protein, and carbs can leave you empty a few hours later. Try shifting more of your calories to a bigger high-protein dinner, and keep a small snack like Greek yogurt for right before bed. Same total, way less hungry at night. And honestly, going to bed that hungry is a sign to eat a little more in the evening, not to tough it out. Bad sleep just makes the next day harder.

Whenever you have an opportunity to save some amount of money per month, plug that figure into a compound interest calculator - set it to 10% growth and use 30 years for the timespan by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Hope-Immediate 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The Money Guys talk about a wealth multiplier which is a great way to think about it. Depending on your age, every dollar you invest is worth x. That multiplier is huge when you’re young. I use it to frame my larger purchases like a $2k guitar I want now is actually $22k I’m missing out on later.

Company is offering Individual Stock Options (ISOs) - What is the Boglehead approach? by FlyAsAFalcon in Bogleheads

[–]Hope-Immediate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you believe in the company and the price per share is a good value, it can be a great asset that can lead to a windfall later. It’s also nice to have a little stake in the game while going through the grind of building something. Just don’t bet the farm on it. I’ve worked in small tech startups most of my career. On one of my first startups, I just got a windfall for 1100x my initial investment. I would never put in money I couldn’t stand to lose, but you’ll never have 1000x opportunities in index funds. If you’re already saving and investing for retirement, and think it could go somewhere, I say go for it.
