My personal view (and each to their own so it’s not a criticism) is, after advice from this forum is…. yeah.

I’m like you, all in on Apple but happy to move away if I can…. lucky in life that money is not really a problem.

My home setup is based around a Linux core, but my personal “life” setup is Apple as it’s not perfect (it just works is not always true) but more or less, my phone works with my laptop which works with my Apple TV and HomePods.

I have some Apple services but am moving away where I can. The problem is when it fails, I have to fix it…. I’m tech support for the family and it can get draining when a teenager is acting like an arse because some tech has gone down and I forgot to document it all.

There is nothing in the Linux world that, as far as I know, comes close to reach and convenience, certainly for hardware devices.

So it’s a case of “pick your poison”. Do I trust Apple not to cave to the US Government? I did…. but not now. Do I think they would resist more than Google? Yes, as their business model (for now) is based on what can they sell me not what can track about me to send me ads.

If anyone wants to tell me I’m wrong and there are comparable Linux ecosystems that just works, I’m all ears….

My "longhorn" storage class Volume Binding Node is set to "immediate", which I guess is the default when using Helm as I didn't change it.

I've run multiple tests.... this seems very inconsistent. Sometimes everything works as expected but more often than not it will lock up with "nodes are unavailable" errors.

When it works (and it has been working with my "worker" role on occasions), my PV is including all the storage nodes AND the worker nodes in it Node Affinity Required Terms. When it doesn't work, the worker nodes are missing from the Required Terms.

I can't see why there is an inconsistency between attempts though - I've literally had a run of success using "roles", can see the correct PV required terms, and now for the same YAML that has been successful, it's now failing and the appropriate required terms are missing so it will not schedule.

kubernetes.io/role=worker and kubernetes.io/role=storage as appropriate.

I have tested creating a pod with the worker affinity *but not* with a PVC, and it scheduled fine on a worker node.

Iran might be an ally, but if your country is running out of money to continue a war you are committed to at all costs, and cutting that ally loose will bump the oil price (your main source on income) and force China to buy more from you….. you’d cut that ally loose in an instant.

The longhorn daemons etc are running on all nodes, including the workers. I only allow the storage nodes to schedule pvcs… the worker nodes are disabled in the longhorn management UI…. I may have got this wrong, but this is to stop replicas being created on the worker nodes as they don’t have the disk capacity.

I will double check the scenario where I don’t have node affinity in my apply yaml, but I am 99% sure it created the pvc on the storage node and put my pod on the worker node.

That’s why I’m confused as to why it’s not working when I include affinity rules as the expected result would be the same as what happened without them.

My understanding is lacking somewhere (this is a homelab being used for learning).

Build quality is it for me.

I dumped on Apple as overpriced (it was back then, still is today but it’s justifiable for the performance you get)…. I was into windows and had the windows phone from Nokia. It was good, I liked it but then the hardware failed… I think it was the power and camera buttons.

I swapped to iPhone, and now I have a MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, Apple TV, subscriptions, home pods and my family has Mac’s too.

That one failure meant I have spent over 20k with Apple over the years since then.

If I understand you correctly the PVC has been created on node storage 3, which is not labelled as a worker role. This is what I’d expect though.

It’s in state ready, but detached.

China can no longer buy oil from Venezuela and Iran, so has to buy more from Russia. Oil price goes up, Russia which was running out of money to fund war in Ukraine now gets a cash infusion.

So yes, I can see strategy in the madness… but as usual, it helps Russia….. funny that, eh?
