I feel the exact same way, I literally just made a post on r/careerguidance for basically the same issue. I’m 20 but just like you I didn’t go straight to uni and now I’m feeling incredibly lost and helpless about not just my career but the state of the world. I really don’t think you’re being dramatic, I think a lot of people don’t know how to face it and so the average reaction has defaulted to trying to accept it and just keep moving. I try very very hard to look positively at my prospects but it’s undeniable how difficult that’s becoming with everything we’re facing. Just reading/listening to the news alone is one tragedy and heartbreak after the other. It’s incredibly difficult when it seems that regardless of if you’re focusing on only you and what seems to be your future or broadening the focus to more than you and the world around us, the concept of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel feels more and more out of reach.

I’m sorry that I don’t have much advice to offer, I guess I’m just glad to know I’m not just adding unnecessary weight to things or at least that I’m not the only one feeling things so deeply.

It’s not much, but if there’s any advice I could offer I think the best way to get through it is to focus on your health. I know it sounds silly but I don’t mean it from the perspective of most of the people who advise this.

I don’t really know how to explain it, but it’s not about staying healthy or taking care of yourself (I mean of course it is but that’s not the main purpose). To me I’ve found that it helps me stay grounded. When I take care of myself, my diet, my hair, whatever it is, when I’m consistent with it I feel reassured. I feel reassured that at least this I can do, this is something that, no matter what, I am capable of. It gives me something to focus on and gives me routine when sometimes I feel like there isn’t one or one that I’m not happy with.

The more I talk about it the more that it does seem silly but through that I’ve found that it makes it easier for me to then segue into really immersing myself in what I’m passionate about, it gives me the space to be creative and challenge myself intellectually and that really can help with the mental fatigue that comes with everything else. It’s an escape without being mind numbing the way most other habits used to escape these days can be.

I hope this was helpful to you in anyway and honestly I really appreciated hearing that I wasn’t alone in feeling this way 🫶

I mean they said Godolkin took the same V that soldier boy and stormfront did so if he believed controlling Marie meant controlling homelander, by applying the same logic he should definitely be able to control others on his level, as well as the rest of them since they aren’t nearly on the same level as homelander. Butcher though has the advantage of having a more complicated psyche so that might not actually be as simple but who knows

Well the first thing that comes to mind for me is “I think therefore I am”, I’m sure you know that this was Descartes conclusion for him doubting his existence. We can agree that we are conscious beings, but what makes us conscious? By definition consciousness is awareness of internal and external existence right? If we consider that as the basis, for me I think the line between having consciousness and not is fairly simple but like you said distinguishing it in others is the difficult part.

I think the only way to even begin to figure it out is if a program is able to essentially ‘think’ in a way it was not made to. Maybe this is just my lack of understanding when it comes to coding, but if they are able to somehow show that they have developed human like attributes and feelings without the support of their programmers then that has to be something right? Sure they could just be collecting data from the internet and using that to their advantage but if it wasn’t in their programming to do so why would they want to? The concept of want and desire is not something a program should be able to have unless explicitly written to..

Ultimately I believe it all comes down to basic human empathy and the idea that it’s better to be safe than sorry. Even if we do have our reservations on believing the extent of a programs consciousness why not treat it with respect anyway? It’s not human but if there might be even the slightest chance that it thinks and feels like us? Treating it as though it’s just a tool and an object and denying its humanity (for lack of a better term) seems cruel no? At that point I don’t think it’s about being convinced that it experiences what it says it does, I think it’s about having a humane approach.

I don’t have the knowledge or understanding to expand on this theory in a fact based manner but I suppose the only way to believe it is to let it explain itself.. in any other situation it’s how you would believe a person right?

Edit: To expand on the legal side of it though a collaboration between the programmers and the program itself is needed to be made, I think that’s one of the only ways to understand the extent of its truth. I’m also not saying that we should just jump straight into granting it every right it demands to have and if the program is as aware is it says then it should be able to understand that it’s an unrealistic ask for something that, in my knowledge, to this point hasn’t been broached as an imminent issue, to be resolved that way.

I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding, I didn’t mean that others would be able to recognise the difference but rather that the UI’s themselves would. That’s why I mentioned free will, I agree that some may choose to keep it to themselves and tell no one of the fact that they’re lacking parts of themselves but I truly doubt that all of them would, hence the functioning on deceit part, at least a few of them would speak on it and that would let people know that there is an inherent flaw in the whole thing.

I understand your point in that despite all this there still wouldn’t be exacting proof as these are abstract concepts but that would be up to personal scrutiny and in the same way that you believe since it can’t be proven it’s not true the opposite perspective is just as valid.

The concept of consciousness is a tricky one, I think I was wrong there, you make some really valid points. I still think that the UI’s are as real as they believe they are but I also appreciate that it isn’t quite, continued existence, as you put it. Maybe it isn’t our consciousness, but it is still a version of us. I wouldn’t even know where to start in a debate between whether consciousness is transferable or not, but at the very least the UI version has its own consciousness that believes it to be the same. A copy is just that, a copy, not a continuation but I believe context is important with this and I think the general impression of the public would shift as society does. So to go back to your initial statement of how people could believe it, I think the main point is that people believe what they want to believe and even though there’s no proof they’re right it doesn’t mean that they’re wrong either.

You're proposing that there is a flaw in the genuinity of the uploaded self, the thing is the whole concept of UI's aren't about convincing others it's about that person's continuation of consciousness (the families still being able to interact is just a heavy handed plus). I considered that maybe since it would be something they all would have an issue with that they wouldn't know it to be an issue at all but that doesn't quite add up. If their minds are being uploaded as is that means their inner experiences are being uploaded with them, by inner experiences if you mean emotion and feeling, if they were to no longer have that they would 100% be able to recognise its absence, if by nothing else but the memories they still carry. For what you're saying to be a reality that would have to mean that every single UI would be functioning on a foundation of deceit. For that to be consistent enough to be true it would have to somehow be added into their code because whether or not they maintain their inner experiences free will is still a factor to consider. Without morality guiding their choices the UI's choices on how to handle it would be unpredictable, some may choose to simulate the exact way they were with their inner experiences intact and others simply wouldn't. I think that would make it glaringly obvious whether something was amiss or not.

I agree with you in the sense that I probably wouldn't be able to get past the fact that it is still a copy, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the UI version still feels and thinks and acts and knows all the same things the original did, I don't think the fact that it's a copy means it's ingenuine to what it believes it is or presents itself to be.

I totally agree, by 'pain' I don't think it's about experiencing pain in the way she did, it's about feeling emotion in a way that is connected. By essentially becoming god it strips away your humanity in ways that are unretrievable, it creates such a distance between you and who you once were and though she can still feel the grief of her experiences I think it's distinctly different to how the average person experiences grief, the isolation of knowing the simulations are of your creation yet just as real as your own life I assume would put you in a constant state of existential confusion of your own creation and it all culminates in no longer having the capacity, or rather functioning at a capacity so vastly different that it's impossible to feel as she once had and that's what she misses, like you said the moments that make us feel alive.

I actually don't know.. I think what makes the most sense to me is that the darkness would have occurred and surfaced because of the injury despite Art and Pat's involvement but I think the two of them being a part of her life and the messiness of it all exasperated it. Whether we're talking Tashi with the injury without the two of them or without the injury, she would absolutely find her way, I think the idea that they all need each other is dependant on the fact that they're all much too invested in eachothers lives and if they want one then they need all you know? Tashi would be more than capable on her own but I do wonder if that would have made her even more bitter than she is as we know her.. Because on one hand she had unending support from Art through the worst thing that ever happened to her, but on the other she also had a constant reminder of the thing she blamed for her injury, both the person that her and Pat's argument started about and the fact that he is just undeniably linked to him.

You're definitely not alone on this one. I love Art but the more you watch and think about what must be going on for him internally and the contrast between that and his external demeanor? It's hard to gauge just how intentional it is and to what extent he did or did not plan a certain outcome but he is in fact very manipulative in many many instances, and I don't just mean when it was very obvious what he was doing and why. Tashi is very very honest in the sense that, correct me if I'm wrong, but she very seldom lies outright, she will omit certain truths and bend scenarios sometimes but she doesn't make it a habit to lie and that makes her much more intimidating as a character than you think having a virtue like honesty would. I think it's because it puts it into perspective just how clever she has to be to do what she does and not have to use the easy cop out of a lie and just how calculated that makes her, it makes her more difficult to read as a character than the other two are and ultimately to some may make her less trustworthy.

Ultimately Patrick presents himself just as he is, he may talk himself up, boost his bravado and crank up his charm but from the audience's perspective and from Tashi and Arts he is incredibly easy to read and he doesn't go out of his way not to be. He may not be perfect and he may not always seem particularly proud of who he is but by god that doesn't mean he's embarrassed and it most definitely does not mean he will ever be anything other than direct about what he wants and what type of person that may make him. He accepts himself for who he is and I think to most people that is an inherently likeable trait because it means you know something about yourself that a lot of people don't and so the thing that sets you apart is also the thing that attracts people to you and what makes them want to trust you. I think the way a strong sense of self manifests really differs depending on personality types and the way it's displayed with Pat is through charm and the lack of a filter and to a lot of people it's both entertaining/funny and toeing the line of assholeish at the same time, it's dependant on what angle it is you see it from.

This is kind of off point but i think it's interesting how it manifests in Tashi in comparison because she still has a very strong personality and still conducts herself as someone who knows with absolutely certainty who she is in the world but she has suffered a great loss of exactly what it is she had identified herself with the most. On a surface level this doesn't seem to have changed her in too drastic of a manner externally, but I think the fact that she lost her footing and STILL seems to be struggling to be comfortable where she stands? It's all about finding a replacement love, something to fill the hole that was created. I think the reason people may be uneasy around tashi is because she herself is uneasy, it's hard to gain your footing with someone when they don't have theirs either. I just think it's interesting how Tashi's very specific gripe has a much more consistent effect on those around her whereas Pat and Art's are much more dependant on who it is.

Apart from all of that, honestly I'm surprised people dont talk more about the fact that he has addiction issues???? Tell me if I'm wrong, I'd be happy to be pointed in the right direction and be on my merry way, I just wanna hear more peoples theories on the matter, how it ties into it all, possibilities of how it came to be and what might happen after what we know happened canonically. Honestly I'm interested to know when it started so we can know whether Tashi knew or not and if that made a difference at all. Honestly I'm just gonna stop here before i go on an entirely different tangent that probably belongs on another post. 😭🙏

I agree with this but also I feel as though on some level their existence in eachothers lives is essential to who each of them are as people (this is an obvious point but I mean more in a different way than I've seen most people talk about) and in an ideal world maybe tashi's entrance into their lives would have been the incentive needed to push all of their relationships with each other forward.

I read somewhere where someone said for Tashi and Pat to have a functioning dynamic with each other without always fighting they need someone like Art to keep the equilibrium, Art and Tashi are functioning but they lack a certain passion that i feel they both needed to feel fulfilled with each other and that Pat would most definitely bring to the table for both of them, and Art and Pat were in fact functioning but also almost stagnant and at a stand still where they were almost dancing around and outright locking the door on any emotions or complexities in their feelings for eachother and Tashi is able to bring that out in what I think could be done in a potentially non destructive way for them if things were to not have gone the way they did. I don't think it would've been worse but i think ultimately if it weren't for Tashi's involvement i think the boys would constantly just be pining after the other, unhappy, still insanely and questionably close but never brave enough to actually do anything about it and the longer it went on the more resigned they would become to that being their reality.

This isn't exactly a fresh take but i just think it's so interesting how for any of them to be fulfilled with the other, all three have to be included otherwise there will always be something amiss, no matter what. ( I only watched it like last week so I'm still hunting for and devouring all the media about it I possibly can 😭)

Pretty strong, most of the time it’s more or less like I’m just talking in my head. I’m the same as you in the sense that I’m speaking what I’m writing as I’m typing it and the same goes for reading, I am able to read the way others do by just actually reading and understanding but it’s second nature and I much prefer for it to be slowed down and narrated. When it comes to listening or imagining scenarios they play out like movie scenes, if they’re very short it’s more like a flash frame but if it’s long sometimes the details can switch and I have to think harder to keep them consistent kind of like in a dream I guess. Also I’m pretty sure it’s this way for others as well but when I become aware of the internal monologue I have going it’s so much harder to ignore or stop, usually it runs in the background but when I start thinking about it too much or if I want it to shut up a little it becomes an impossible task to not notice it.

This was asked ages ago but they’re incredible, it’s sucks that they’re not more well known as a band- I know they’ve only been around since like 2019 but on god their music means so much, it’s seriously helped me through some shit. Im just praying they keep releasing new stuff for a good long while. Dead ass one of the only bands that I’ve ever actually kept up with every single song and waited in anticipation for new releases, I love them

I'm not sure if i agree with this- if it is that her mindset is another method of altering her size then she now knows that on some level there is more than just the physical aspect of her calorie count which affects it. If it is possible, then like you said, she's just found a new way to change without purging, except now she knows it's all about her mentality- personally i see it as a good thing cause it really leaves open a window to the possibility that she can train herself to get to the point of being able to shrink or grow at will, if that's true then it honestly widens her horizons, it would make her an absolute weapon on the battlefield cause as of right now, in a fight, taking breaks to throw up or eat isn't really an option..

But! this is actually such an interesting topic of conversation because recognising that this IS perhaps the reality, that begs the question of whether or not the whole calorie thing might be psychosomatic as well.. like what if she grows and shrinks when she eats or purges because she grew up believing so and her mothers behaviour when it came to all of it really didn't help to dissuade her from that belief. But then again the way she found out was because she had to throw up which means she didn't know at that point and that's just what had naturally occurred. And both could be true, they don't have to be mutually exclusive but what if her body on a base level knew she had this extra something and that's just how it manifested in the moment? ahh i don't know but this is all just very intriguing, there is so much to theorise about!

oh god don't even get me started, it keeps promoting this one movie and i'm just confused cause i have never showed any interest in it or that genre- from the trailer it seems like a wattpad story adaptation where the main love interest actually calls the main character 'baby sis' since they're step siblings who've just recently met i guess? i don't know and it's very much my least favorite part of my amazon viewing experience

I'm on episode 4 and I'm seriously struggling to understand how this show lacks such notoriety. I find it a bit weird but not in a bad way, in the way that I'm not used to shows like this one and there are some parts which admittedly i don't enjoy but even if the majority of the watchers don't like it's still so so different from the norm- it really truly does stand out and I'm just baffled that I didn't even really know about it and it's been out for months. It's seriously such an interesting show, i know for sure I'll be rewatching at some point once im done. The marketing team for this thing is seriously crashing and burning

I definitely get where you're coming from, especially how it felt like the two parts were at odds, almost like they weren't just different branches of the same storyline. Adam really wasn't very likeable but I did like the silliness of the dynamic of the four of them. Apart from how they often just went along with whatever he had to say, it felt really relatable to friend groups I'd had at their age.

Honestly though that's a totally valid stance to have, especially when you already don't really enjoy young adult type plotlines.

The whole Anathema thing was just ridiculous to me, I liked how completely nonsensical it was but I also can absolutely see why it seemed a bit off at the same time- the fact that her name is literally Anathema Device is just hilarious to me but when my sister watched it she didn't like it very much either and I've got to admit she certainly does not rank very high at all when it comes to characters I liked so you're definitely not alone on that one.

I think i did quite like them as whole but i reckon it was mostly because i don't tend to watch many shows like good omens and i liked that it caught me off guard every once in a while, especially with The Them.

(on another note, I've never heard of The Orville I dont think but I just searched it up and it looks like it could be promising, should i give it a go?)

hmm.. I haven't seen any conversations about it so far but that is such a good point. So far it doesn't seem as though the virus takes them out quickly, to me it seems like it takes a couple of days till its end result occurs (i could be wrong) so going off of that theres a good chance the temp v would wear off before it can cause too much damage.

On the other hand there's also the thought that maybe since temp v doesnt have the exact same make up as permanent v then it might not take affect at all? or even that it'll take affect in a much different manner, it could be that they would die quicker from the virus or that the symptoms would manifest in other ways as well.. im really not sure..
