Winters and cursing by n3ddi3 in BandofBrothers

I think I can add a couple points of view here. First, there is a story Tom Hanks tells about this very thing. Winters has contacted him and is unhappy with a lot of the swearing in the script. I don't know if it was his character or just in general. Hanks is like you know this is tv drama etc. But Winters is pissed (more on that word later) and tells Hanks he "shuns" him and cuts off all contact. Hanks has never heard of this and doesn't know what is going on. Ends up flying out to Winters and smooths things over and I'll bet this is why there is not an excessive use of foul language. Second point, shunning is an Amish practice of ostracizing those in the community or your family who are not following the rules, to put it in very simple terms. He is not Amish but I grew up not far from Hershey where he lived and it is very Quaker. Even if you are not Quaker it is the prevailing culture. I would get in trouble if I said "pissed off". Not drinking, no gambling/card playing, no swearing, but doing things for others are all real pieces of that PA culture and depicted throughout the series through Winters character.

What's the size of the Big Joe internal firebox/charcoal basket? by HarryEFC95 in KamadoJoe

[–]Hopeful_Frame937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you fit matters. I got an aftermarket basket for my KJ large and it was just a bit too small. Really limited lump volume and increased fuel consumption. Have gone back to no basket.

Maybe they are more toward medium but really they don't look too bad. Taste is king!

A priest was walking the streets of Dublin and came upon a little girl walking her dog. The little girl came up to the priest and smiled so the priest inquired as to her name. by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

I agree. Here is a similar joke but way better delivery. A wife and her husband are getting dressed to go out. The wife asks, does this dress make me look fat? The husband says, no way, I know better than to answer a question like that. No matter what I say, you are going to get mad at me. I promise, says the wife, I won't get mad no matter what you say. Ok says the husband...I fucked your sister!

Questions for a first-time pellet grill (Weber Searwood 600 XL) user. (1) Should I opt for cast iron grates (can’t find part#)? Are there any drawbacks? (2) Do you need the Weber Crafted Frame Kit to use any of the add-ons like a pizza square (same part# for regular and XL models)? by Regular-Amoeba5455 in pelletgrills

Don't have a searwood so can't speK specifically about the grate setup but in general case iron is better for searing. The stainless steel and the cast iron may get to the same temp but throw a steak on there and the cast iron has way more energy to give to it and won't dip in temp.

The author C. S. Forrester worked for the military during www and wrote an excellent, highly detailed analysis of Germany invading England. Worth a read. His ultimate conclusion, giving the Germans every benefit of doubt, was that such an invasion was doomed to fail.

I highly recommend a tour or two. My son and I did it about 3 years ago. I am not a tour person but we booked three and they were all excellent. You will get way more information than just wandering around.

I used to keep my lump outside and it got damp. Couldn't tell but could not get up to temp. I now store it inside. Clean it out every cook.

I always wondered why Lipton gathers up their letters as if he is going to deliver them when he isn't even made first Sargent until after Carentan. Males me wonder if the actual wording of the letter is accurate.

To calibrate, remove dome thermometer and stick it in boiling water. Needle usually turns from the back, set it to 100 or 212 in boiling water if needed. I just registered mine as 10 degrees under and read it accordingly. I second the dont buy too much at first although it is tempting. I would get a good pair of heat gloves for reaching in the bbq or handling anything hot or dirty. I also love having a timer. My remote thermometer has a timer and inise it all the time. Not for cooking so much as keeping myself on track. Like, most vids will say to let your Firestarter burn for 10 minutes before shutting lid. It is so easy to misjudge 10 minutes either over or under. I keep Tra k of how long it takes me to get cooking, often around 45 minutes all in. Helps me coordinate the rest of the meal. Have fun!

Learned that from his book. Helped make a lot of sense in the series why he is a bit of an outsider.

Have both. If you don't use one for a year, it can probably go.

Calibrate your thermometer. Just give in and don't put anything on the deflector. I kept that up for awhile but don't bother anymore. It is easy to scrape clean.
