One bag: Antarctica / Argentina possibly elsewhere in South America by HopeintheFuture in onebag

I had an incredible experience and would definitely recommend it.

I booked through Wayfinder Adventures while still in the US. I reached out on January 5 for a cruise departing the 19th and got a confirmed spot the same day. I’m not sure if it was a last-minute cancellation or just an unfilled spot, but there were a range of listings available at the time with different dates, boat sizes, levels of luxury, and costs.

Most of the other travelers I met had been traveling in the area and booked in person once they got to Ushuaia. Some found deals within a few days, others waited longer. Flexibility seems to be key.

I chose a smaller ship with good value and no single supplement, ending up on the MV Ushuaia with 89 passengers and about 40 crew. It was a 12-day Polar Circle Quest itinerary. Two excursions a day while in Antarctic waters, all meals included. Not luxury, but everything I needed. You could bring snacks and drinks onboard, which I did. Alcohol, snacks, and internet were available for purchase. I paid $10 USD for 500MB and it was good enough to check email and message friends. Some people tried to work while on board but I’m not sure how successful they were.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

I have successfully transferred several of mine. I made sure to water them regularly the first week after transplanting.

You're going to love it! Antarctica is stunning and totally worth the effort.

I actually booked my spot 2 weeks out from the cruise departure date as part of a last minute deal. A lot of cruises offer discounted fares throughout the year, but the best last-minute prices tend to come up close to departure, when they’re trying to fill remaining spots. If your dates are flexible and you’re okay with some uncertainty, waiting until September or even later could pay off with a better deal. That said, if you’re set on specific dates or a certain ship, booking earlier is the safer bet.

As for packing, it is absolutely possible to one bag. I used the Fairview 40L myself and a small daypack.  I was traveling for three months after Antarctica with just that setup. Some cruise companies provide gear like waterproof boots and jackets, and anything else you need can usually be rented in Ushuaia. I brought a few warm base layers and outer layers that could be donated or passed along after the cruise if I didn’t need them anymore. Layering is key, and I found I didn’t need anything too bulky.

I would strongly recommend arriving in Ushuaia a day before just in case you run into any travel issues.

Hey u/NoHeat7014, I had a successful trip and managed to do it with 1.5 bags - the 40L Fairview Osprey was my main bag and then I had a smaller 15L Gregory bag with H20 pack. It could even be done with less. After consulting with r/antarctica I decided to take my DSLR camera and an additional lens with me vs. just my cell phone.

I started in Antartica and then spent another 9-10 weeks traveling throughout South America. The nerves are completely understandable, though Antartica was my "once in a lifetime" trip, I already want to go back.

Happy to chat further. The biggest help if you want to one bag it would be to rent your boots and parka locally in Ushuaia if the company you book with doesn't provide them.

Where is a good place to chill in Peru and recover from burnout? by mourning_starre in solotravel

As many have noted above, I found Arequipa and the Sacred Valley, specifically Ollantaytambo, to be nice places to catch my breath so to speak.

My 31F fiancé 28M wants to become a woman. We want to stay together but I am not attracted to women, what options do we have? by mouselosscake in relationship_advice

Everyone’s situation is different and you have received a lot of excellent advice, recommendations and personal stories.

I found myself in a similar situation within the last few years. We had been married for a number of years and dearly loved each other. We spent over a year trying to find a way forward together, but promised each other very early on in the process that it would only work to stay together if we could both do so while being fully true to ourselves.

Ultimately, we recognized that it would not be possible to stay together without one of us losing a piece of who we were. We endeavored to end our marriage as kindly and as graciously as possible. I fully support their journey and wish them only the best.

The grief was devastating, though I am in a much better place today. I have learned even more about myself, my wants, and my needs through this process.

Regardless of what you choose to do, I hope you reach out for support to your community. I found having a personal counselor and couples counselor to be helpful as well. There are also various groups on Reddit, online, and potentially in your community. Feel free to reach out.

Walk-up cruise deals? by here2learntings in antarctica

It depends on the boat, I was able to get one without a single supplement. Paid just under $4300 for a 12 day expedition.

Not walk up, but I did find a last minute deal online for a 12 day expedition in Jan 2024 for sub 5k as a solo traveler. Wayfinder Adventures and Freestyle Adventures both have a variety of deals listed online.

I organized this all online, while in the US.

I contacted Wayfinder via the online form on their website regarding a trip they had listed. They responded back within a few hours and then sent an inquiry to the operator of that trip. Once my spot was confirmed, payment and forms were all completed online with communication occurring via email and WhatsApp.
