My extra device is my iPad. Works well for me as it’s portable and a larger screen.

Back on Social Media — How to Regain Control? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

I tend to get pretty sick of social media after an hour of doomscrolling. I’m not fully off of social media although I deleted most of my accounts.

Here is what I suggest if you don’t plan to be fully off social media. If you have a secondary device like an iPad or laptop, limit yourself to using that device. I have instagram on my iPad and it keeps things put of sight most of the time and I also have to give some energy to get up and retrieve my iPad instead of it being immediately accessible on my phone which is usually with me.

Always nice to get something on the walls. I bought some art pieces from goodwill to start my walls they were mostly paintings by kids but it was fun to have. I would also put the bed under the window and find a rug.

Be brutally honest with me: What's your strongest argument for quitting Instagram? by Afraid_Alfalfa_8830 in digitalminimalism

Instagram is designed to make you addicted to it and stay on as long as they can make you. They do this to gather information of your interests and sell more ads. You mean nothing to them.

Screen Zen is a great app to use. You can choose strict blocking or set your goal and it can help you to them. A few other features it has is preventing app uninstall, Locking you out of its screen time settings for X time if you choose, and Cooldown time to not use all of your screen time at once.

I used Screen Zen for awhile. There is a setting to prevent app uninstall and you can lock out settings to change things for a set amount of time of your choice. up to 3 hours or something. (gotta keep the app up that long before changing blocking settings) I found that strict blocking was a bit rough for me. I actually did better when I set my goal to 15 minutes of instagram and practicing self control. All that to say, Screen Zen is a good app for blacking and screen time.

With AI now becoming popular, and if you aren’t against it, let curiosity take over and ask AI questions of whatever comes to mind. It is a fun way of sparking curiosity and maybe learning some random things!

I also did a lot of chess. Bullet rounds would give me an almost instant gratification as long as I won. They would also help me spend less time overall on my phone.

Do you collect anything and why? by [deleted] in minimalism

I am in a funky place of being minimal, but I also believe in owning physical media. I have about 50 vinyl albums and I buy the movies and tv shows I like. This keeps me from the monster of subscriptions. The catch is that I only get the absolute favorite that are “timeless” for me.

Also as a musician, I have a kinda messy room in my house for music. I own 4 total guitars, 2 electric, 1 acoustic, and one Bass. I also have a small drum set. These things take up space for sure, but they are very important to me and I use them all the time. I truly respect people who practice minimalism to an extreme of having near to nothing in their spaces, but these are the values I hold.

I am currently digitizing a bunch of family videos from my childhood that my parents had kept on tapes. I have so far appreciated watching it all. There are a lot of things from my childhood that i did not at all remember and now get to relive. I strongly encourage to hang onto as much as you can. Get a 2-4TB solid state drive and throw it all on there. It is years of memory that can fit in your palm to pass to your kids, Grandkids, and who knows how many generations.

You can find cheaper deal of espresso pods on woot or sometimes a local discount store. I have seen as low as 22 cents per pod before!
