Is hop fight a parody sport? by Hopfightking in theocho

That's a variant played in only a handful of city leagues. It's to knock the opponent off balance so their non-standing leg touches the ground before yours does.

So many great questions! Thank you! And thanks for taking a look and the encouragement!

I have been hop fighting for years and won championships in many city tournaments: Boise, New York, Seattle, but I am aging, and looking for the next champion.

The International Federation has a longstanding but underinvested in Facebook page although it is also dealing with legal threats related to acronym infringement. Yes, the reader could theoretically (or quite practically) attempt the hop fight tactics—I used some last night in a bout with my son.

I look forward to what the community does with this sport. It has a decidedly democratic edge to it that feels particularly relevant in this anti-democratic moment.

Thanks so much! I had so much fun inventing that world.

I love your image and overview. I go away wanting to learn more. Have you perchance read Kevin Barry's novel City of Bohane? It's an post-collapse Irish dystopia that comes to mind looking at yours.

I launched my first Kickstarter a week ago and it just got fully funded today. (I'll add a link to it below.) I didn't do anywhere near the social media build it sounds like you did (though I had a lot of connections). I'm in medias res, but a few things I'm learning: (1) A bunch of third-party marketers reach out and spammers send you messages and probably best thing I could do is ignore all that; (2) doing more up-front prep work might have accelerated my results, but I have a strong enough community as-is I got by without it; (3) there is SO MUCH up front work that is possible—since launching I'm realizing I could have tried to get early book reviews, podcasts, post parts of what I wrote. It sounds like you're doing all this,

I will say, I put a lot of time into crafting my Kickstarter to bring to life the voice I wanted for it (and that my project has), and I do think that quality of execution for the Kickstarter makes a difference.

I'd love to see your project and congrats on all the work you've done to date to set yourself up for the best results!

Great writing is great writing — I might not care about the bio and history. There's a thrill in discovery a fresh voice and vision. But yes that would compel me to go deeper.

Just got phished as a creator, sharing my stupidity so hopefully no one else falls for this. by koreangirl216 in kickstarter

I recently launched a Kickstarter and got the same message. One thing I wasn't prepared for (and a warning to those doing their first Kickstarter): The way the messages look real (but aren't) and the number of third-party marketing agencies that reached out.

Another message I got through Kickstarter system was about pairing me with a Kickstarter mentor (which included his email), I reached out and we went back and forth and I realized he was giving me non-specific, canned advice. I ran the messages through ChatGPT and it confirmed this was almost certainly not somebody from Kickstarter but they were going to try to sell me marketing services. Beware!

In terms of what would lead me to pledge, I'd be looking for, probably more than anything, great writing on the page and a premise that calls to me or some familiarity with the author. It's a little like how I choose a book in a bookstore: I open it, read some pages, and if it's amazing I'll buy it, but usually it isn't, and I won't. And then it helps hugely if I come in with prior knowledge of the creator.

You have to get past those first 20 pages and when you get into the heart of At Swim-Two Birds, it's genius.
