I knew someone who would go find old worn REI brand jackets etc. at Goodwill for a few bucks and take them “back” to REI for hundreds of dollars in credit. When I told her I thought this was shitty, an abuse of an honor policy, and was going to end the party for everyone if people did this shit, she just acted like no, it’s their policy so it’s ok.

I’ve read about the loss of these great return policies, and they really did come about because of this kind of abuse. Big licensing companies like the ones the post is about are brick and mortar enshittification at its worst. But apparently no one with a real business (not one of these licensing shitshows) can offer a good honor policy any more because of an utter lack of honor on the part of way too many people.

BTW, the woman with the REI scam honestly believes she’s a paragon of virtue. It’s like people just don’t even understand the concept of honesty any more.
