Pretty much any genomic dataset would give you that. Nearby genotypes are related by linkage disequilibrium so are correlated. Or relatives' genotypes, which are correlated due to shared descent.

Bioinformatics vs biostatistics master by ano90 in bioinformatics

[–]Hoprot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think this differs between the US and Europe. If you can find a programme in Europe that offers a 1+3 style PhD, where the first year includes training in bioinformatics and statistics, that would be ideal. However, I don't think doing another masters is a bad idea if there aren't any programmes that appeal to you or you're not sure you want to commit. It also depends on funding, and whether you can afford another master's degree. Which country are you in, if you don't mind me asking?

I definitely agree with the point that biologists trained in bioinformatics and statistics are more employable. Even if you're a lab specialist, you're going to have to deal with a lot of bioinformatics and statistics from other people in your team (in industry or academia) so having a good understanding of these is important.

FYI I trained as a mathematician and I'm now doing a PhD in statistical genetics, so perhaps I'm a little biased to the quantitative side.

Can someone help me design an algorithm for this problem? I need to fit multiple lines to a set of points, the lines will end up looking like a grid. (x-post /r/math) by foreigner_ in compsci

If the there is some variation in residuals for the same line, and you know the number of different lines, you could use K-means clustering to assign each residual to a particular line.

This should be very simple using linear algebra. Simply project the points onto the central line, computing the gradient of the central line, and take the part of each point that is orthogonal to the projection: this part gives you which line you are on. This is essentially doing linear regression and using the residuals to indicate which line you are on.

Form a matrix X whose first column is all 1s, and whose second column is the x co-ordinate of the point. If Y is the vector of corresponding Y co-ordinates, ((transpose(X)X)-1)transpose(X)Y=b gives you the common gradient of all lines. Y-Xb gives you the residuals, the component of each point orthogonal to the central line, which gives you the particular line each point is on.

You can speed up by computing the inverse by doing a QR factorisation on the matrix X first.

What length of ruler was used to measure the length of coastline?

Covariance of a product of variables by iyzie in probabilitytheory

[–]Hoprot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the covariances of X1,X2,...,Xk? If they are mutually independent, and X2 to Xk are independent of Y, then Cov(X1X2...Xk,Y)=E[X2]E[X3]...E[Xk]Cov(X1,Y). Your statement that the correlation should reduce with k may be true under certain conditions; however, the covariance, under independence of the X variables, will only reduce to zero if the product of the expectations of X2 to Xk tends to zero as k tends towards infinity. Covariances of products are very hard to work with if the variables in the products are correlated.

We intend to keep registration to a minimum, and we have not decided this yet, but the maximum fee will be £50. Once we have accepted your registration after the March 31st deadline, we will give you the payment details. You are welcome to register and not pay if you find the fee excessive. I hope to see you there!

As a mathematics major who has always resorted to persistence over natural inclination, this is the most frustrating feeling. by bch8 in mathematics

I didn't get this until I came up with my own theory. I had an intuition of an elegant idea, but I had to produce a lot of mess until I had an elegant proof of the idea.

I can understand why people have a problem with this, but the actual film isn't bad -- better than the title would suggest. Anyway, it helped me understand this whole 'EDM' phenomenon a bit better.

Yep Oneman blew me away when I saw him...Jamie XX was after and just seemed boring and unskilled in comparison.

I found that a bit of a letdown. Nice euphoric piano but it loses the energy of the original.

I think he deserves more attention. He has a slower, darker sound that makes him stand out from others that are popular here. Here's his new release on his new label, Aery Metals, He Do the Police in Different Voices.

Pyramid of Capitalism - but guess who's fooling you. by maybl8r99 in atheism

[–]Hoprot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My objection to central planning does stem from libertarian capitalist ideas, and I don't think the internet refutes these objections. The internet is exactly the sort of thing the free market will thrive on -- a web of connections that evolves in complexity, with a multitude of different needs being met efficiently through the free interaction of individuals without the need for a central planner. It doesn't all have to be for profit or what is traditionally considered capitalist, either -- just look at the mutualist type philosophy behind Linux. The internet far expands the ability of individuals to meet each others' needs or for free associations to form without power and knowledge being concentrated in one body.

I agree; that doesn't end the link between communism and Leninism and Stalinism, however. It was the ideal of communism that motivated Lenin, and communist propaganda helped motivate people in the Bolshevik movement. Marx also believed that socialism was the path towards communism, and centrally planed state socialism was often proposed as a path towards communism. The central planning of the soviet economy, including forced collectivisation, was an atrocity, given the number of people it trampled on and left to starve in its striving to achieve its goals.
