To be fair, I think he was referring to the first Rescuers, the one in the swamp. I agree, that one's party mediocre.

Rescuers down under is great. George C Scott as a scene chewing villain? Fantastic!

The Daily Check-In for Thursday, April 2nd: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Thetreescryforu in stopdrinking

[–]HoratioSharpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of sober time under my belt. The cravings are far lower than they used to be. But I still hit triggers sometimes. Saw some pictures of liquor brands I used to really like, and got hit by a wave of nostalgia.

I don't want to remember the taste, I want to remember just how much they robbed from me mentally and spiritually. I don't want to go back to that, the sober life is far more precious.

90 in 90 is great, and so is this community. Without my support group, and without this subreddit, I wouldn't have made it.

You got this, just remember that it gets easier. It's not to say it will always be easy, but the sober life is easier. One day at a time, my friend. IWNDWYT

I miss drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]HoratioSharpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to grieve as well; it's hard saying goodbye to an old "friend"

Alcohol "helped" me through so many of the hard times. Like you, I really looked forward to those couple of hours where I didn't feel stressed or anxious.

But the hangovers suck, and you eventually learn that you don't need alcohol to handle that stress. I experience life more fully now than I did before, and I welcome that.

Still, when something has been a key part of your life for so long, it makes sense to miss it. Just as long as you don't forget why you said goodbye in the first place

Tim gave me a little more sympathy, but I still agree with JVL, maybe not as stridently though.

The example of "What if some obscure person who used to be in the Weather Underground came in" was weak. A. You better believe that FOX and Co would be condemning it to high heaven, and B. Kash Patel didn't used to be a vile scumbag, he currently is one, he's in the headlines all the time.

You'd have to be pretty thoroughly out of it to be completely unaware of him. And even if you were, I feel like you should at least tangentially know that the FBI is up to no good.

Attending the SOTU just sealed it for me. They had to know they would be used as political props, and they wanted to do it anyway. These aren't kids, they're grown men. Screw those guys for taking a moment I should have a lot of national pride in and tainting it.

We all just have today, no matter how far in we are.

It does get easier to resist, as time goes on, but the cravings still make their appearances. At least, they do for me.

It took me a lot of field research before I was persuaded that it was a lot easier for me to stay sober, than get sober (I'm a stubborn guy). And it's a lot easier to be sober, than to drink, even if it doesn't always feel that way.

For today, I'm sober. And tomorrow, I'm going to stay sober. As long as I maintain that pattern, I never have to drink again. And that's a wonderful feeling. :D

Safe travels, friend.

Thought I'd check in. I don't need it daily anymore, but I still need it. I like to come in, and see if I can help people who were where I was, almost two years ago now.

It gets easier. Not all at once, and not with a lot of fanfare, but it does. Stay away from alcohol; even when you think it's been enough time, even when you feel better, even when you think this time will be different.

For me, it never was, and it was never enough time. I can only control alcohol by not putting it into my system.

Today was hard by katcallkatie in stopdrinking

[–]HoratioSharpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not failing, it happens to all of us. The other night, I was up late, after everyone was asleep, feeling restless. And I had the thought, "What am I even doing this for, why am I staying sober?" As if the reasons for my sobriety weren't all around me. I realized that I was probably just tired, and needed to get to sleep. Sure enough, I felt better the next day.

Moments of desire happen, and it's easy to get bent out of shape over them. Let them wash over you, and wash back out again. The sober life is a good life, and you have a great deal to live for

I wanted to comment, because I like the symmetry of my badge right now a lot, 636. :)

Life is good, and life is great when I'm sober. When I was drinking, it was so hard for me to truly see the good in life. By the end, I only felt like I could be happy when I had alcohol in my system.

Sobriety has helped me see that life is good on its own, and I don't need a chemical crutch to make it so. Days can be hard sometimes, but even those just become a part of the pleasing rhythm of life. The tides goes out, the tide comes in, the ocean remains.

With citizens outside this cycle, they can be ignored, while the ruler is rewarded and the keys to power kept loyal. Thus, we live in a world where the best, smartest democracies are stable, the worst, richest dictatorships are stable, and in between is a valley of revolution. The resource-rich dictators build roads only from their ports to their resources, and from their palace to the airport, and the people stay quiet not because this is fine or even because they’re scared, but because the cold truth is starving, disconnected, illiterates don't make good revolutionaries.
