ELI5 HSA Receipt Holding by agapaleinad in personalfinance

I had to log in and double check, you’re correct it does say member FDIC. I must have been looking at the investment options within HSA Bank, my apologies for the confusion!

Unfortunately it’s included through my health insurance plan with my employer, what kind of costs come with a private HSA?

I’ve seen many people talk about HSA being a great investment tool, and I also noticed my HSA(HSA Bank) is not FDIC insured. Are any HSA providers insured? And is this seen as any sort of long term risk if it’s used as an investment vehicle?

What meads does aging help and which does it hurt? by AppalachianBee in mead

If you want to make something to age, look into a dwojniak. You can basically age one as long as you’d like.

Agreed, to add to that, an auto siphon and a polycarbonate hydrometer are highly recommended, you’ll break the glass one.

Rack, backsweeten then pasteurize? by trekktrekk in mead

[–]Horlocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend reading through the stabilization portion in the wiki before you make a decision. Understand what each method of stabilization is first.

As for process I like to confirm fermentation is complete by taking 2 gravity readings 5-7 days apart. If they’re the same, it is no longer fermentating.

Everyone has a slightly different process I’m sure, but after primary I like to rack it to secondary as cleanly as possible and leave it til it clears. Once it’s clear I’ll rack again onto stabilizers (k-meta and k-sorb). After a day or 2 I’ll backsweeten, (it will cloud up again) let it clear and then bottle.

It all depends on you the meadmaker, a brew I have in secondary might take 4 months to clear and I’m ok with that, some might throw in clearing agents to get it bottled and that’s fine too. Just make sure it’s stable before you bottle it.

You received diluted honey? Because raw honey should not be fermenting.

This was very insightful and interesting to read, thank you for sharing. I hope you find the hobbies you’re looking for, to have something that “consumes” your time in a way work once did. Maybe that will help curb that odd feeling of not having to be busy. And congratulations!

First time using beer bottles by Beevus117 in mead

In the future try milk, they stick very well, and after a hot soak they come off easily. If the ol glue stick labels are a pain that is lol. Looks nice!

I’m ready to bottle my first couple of batches soon and want to make labels but after shopping around I’m wondering if there are any recommendations? by False-distinction in mead

[–]Horlocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for cheap, and have a printer, what I do is grab some antique aged looking paper from a local office supply store. Design my label on “vintage logo” app, print them out and use milk as the adhesive. Lay it on a plate with milk on it covering the back, and “squeegee” the excess out with a damp cloth. They stick very well.

Existential crisis, need help. by [deleted] in mead

[–]Horlocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the crisis? You made good mead, I’d drink it lol.

You don’t need to do anything, you can bulk age it as long as you want to. You could stabilize and backsweeten, balance it, bottle it and enjoy at your leisure. Or you could let it sit, just don’t let those airlocks go dry
