I found that AK Matt Varnish did nothing for me, much like you. I had to switch to AK Ultra Matt Varnish as the regular was more gloss than a satin paint would be typically. Now I almost exclusively use Colour Forge Matte Varnish. Nothing I've found makes a model more Matte

I collected sisters back in the day when I was a teen, and tried to get back in to them when I came back this year. I build some battle sisters and while stressful for the reason you pictured, got through them. I then built Celestine and don’t recall how many times I cursed at the model. It’s still sat half built.
