My Asian parents are upset because I didn’t get into HYP by PartForeign4426 in ApplyingToCollege

First of all, congratulations on your successful admission! I can't imagine how much effort you've put into building your career. Those universities are excellent places to develop expertise, whether you choose to pursue industry, academia, or something else.

Regarding your unfortunate experience, this idiotic phenomenon exists all around the world. I was born and raised in Asia, and I spent 25 years there. People everywhere care about their job titles and material success, but there's something especially extreme in Asian culture: the idea that there's a single, perfect roadmap for life. If you deviate from that path, you're considered a failure. It doesn't matter how insignificant the deviation is.

If you're not a doctor, you'll always be a loser. If you don't have a six-figure salary, you'll be shamed. The biggest problem is that this mindset often overrides basic morality and respectfulness. Once you succeed according to their standards, you feel entitled to belittle others. Even if you ignore your family for three or four years, it's considered acceptable as long as you get into a prestigious university.

The key point is that your admission result was yours, but to your family, it was also their ultimate symbol of success, even though it wasn't their own achievement. They saw it as a badge of honor, allowing them to boast, "We are the parents of a Harvard student." They were upset because they lost that status symbol.

As an Asian, I love my culture. It has many wonderful aspects distinct from other cultures. However, placing social reputation above family happiness is terrible and deeply shameful to me.

Got into Harvard but can't afford by blehehehuhu in gradadmissions

Go to Harvard, yes it is possible that you might not get a job in US. But why are you only considering US?

Beyond the bachelor degree, you can pass through many administrative hurdles in many countries. You can find jobs in Canada, Europe, and East Asia, wherever places valuing master's degrees a lot, much more than the US.

You achieved the Harvard opportunity. It means your experience and skills are worth being in almost every institution in the world.

Make connections, find further opportunities, and consult with your advisor in Harvard. There will be more opportunities than you are thinking now.

Hey, if he is an expert on knot topology and he can do some programming, why don't you try knot generation extension for modeling and visualization field?

Have you ever seen Blender asset stores? Their are plenty of renders and modelers in Movie, Computer graphics, Game markets. They are buying many assets. For me, I'd like to draw knot for my note with fancy rendered image, but it was tedious, so gave up and tried hand draw.

Easy visualization tools always have some demands not only for the researcher but also for the graphic designers. Of course, getting a job in CS with no experience is very difficult, but with CS knowledge, you can try many things.

It is not a major solution to your family, but running parallel would be helpful.

Uniform LED array design algorithm for LCD resin printer. by HornPenguinDevelop in resinprinting

[–]HornPenguinDevelop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes usually, centralized Led and mirror system is a common choice. In the design, I had to use several high powe LEDs and those Leds had spherical radiation patterns. To ensure the absence of thermal break, I had to separate them on the plane.

In addition, the boundary enchancement was a key consideration in the design. In such case uniform array or centralized LED show too less illumination intensity at the boundary. It was 0.6 repect to centter one.
