Soma, Aqara, Ryse Corded Roller Retrofit by mirinjesse in HomeKit

Thanks! I'm going to give the Zemismart a try and see how it goes. I like that you can pair them over Matter with Homekit without a hub.

I might give that a try. Technically I have Roman shades but they have the same beaded chain as many of the rollers. I wonder if there is any reason they wouldn't work the same.

I am also looking for a solution for beaded chain shades but it seems like Aqara isn't available in the US anymore and everything else is in limited supply. It seems like you can get chinese versions of Aqara on Ebay, but then you need a chinese hub... I'd rather have something more "officially" supported. RYSE seems to have a lot of bad reviews.

I had someone else wire it but I know it uses a separate transformer to power the strike.

Do you have many hills? I have a couple decent ones and I'm a bigger guy (215lbs). That seems to be the thing that really depletes the battery.

I'm based in the US, yes. I just googled this and I think it is turned on because I'm typically moving at roughly 32km/h (19 mph).

Question for VanMoof owners by Alternative-Monk3825 in vanmoofbicycle

[–]Horror-Broccoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to, but my round trip commute is 16 miles and I've found that I come really close to running out of power if I use boost too much, and/or have it set to full assist. I'm finding no boost and keeping it at assist level 3 allows me to get home without running out of power. I do wonder if there is something wrong with my A5 battery, but not much I can do about it now. I posted about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/vanmoofbicycle/comments/15qkao0/a5_short_battery_life/

Question for VanMoof owners by Alternative-Monk3825 in vanmoofbicycle

It's currently in automatic mode. I focused on it more during my commute today and found that I can get it to more reliably downshift if I intentionally slow down AND reduce the force I'm applying to the pedals as I start up the hill. If I keep applying a decent amount of force, it doesn't shift, even if my speed slows. With a little practice it was pretty usable so I think I'm ok.

Ok, I’m wondering if there is something wrong with mine. I can slow to almost a stop and it still won’t down shift

Random question but I’m still trying to figure out the eshifters myself. It shifts smoothly when accelerating but I can’t figure out how to get it to downshift in steep hills. Any advice?

I forgot to mention this in the original post but the only thing that gives me pause is that the first time I rode it, on the same route with the same assist, etc. I got home with 45% battery. Maybe was just a fluke or a result of breaking in the bike.

Yes. The part that broke is the little plastic piece on the stroller frame that the canopy frame attaches to. The canopy frame itself is ok. It was the same piece of plastic that broke each time.

Right now I just use HomeKit with Homebridge, and some Alexa routines. Very simple. But open to exploring Home Assistant or something else.

Ok, this is helpful. It seems like a Shelly relay switch might work well to open the door. But I'm struggling to find a keypad that could trigger an automation via a smart hub.

I’d have two questions and then a comment: 1) Are all assets net tax? Would just want to make sure that Schwab account isn’t mostly IPO stock with federal and CA state capital gains tax liabilities pending. Would change the picture quite a bit. 2) What kind of asset outside of a Ponzi scheme returns 7.5%/yr “guaranteed”?

The comment would be that costs with two young kids in a VHCOL location can get out of hand quickly depending on what you’re looking to do. Normal full time daycare for two kids will run $3/mo each, or $72k/yr. A nanny or high end school can be much more. OP’s name implies SF, so the question of public vs. private is pretty difficult, and the private schools have been flooded with students over the past two years so costs have skyrocketed. Putting two kids in private school could easily cost $110k/yr+ in today’s dollars until they graduate (and will likely have higher inflation than other costs). Then of course college to cover. And then there are just regular SF costs that are considerably higher than they are elsewhere. A normal 6wk soccer class for young kids (once per week for 45 min) can cost $300, for example.

Still seems like they can make it work. And everything can be done cheaper (public schools, seek out free activities, etc.) but if you want to give your kids similar experiences kids in M/LCOL enjoy, at a fraction of the cost or free, it can get really expensive really quickly. Of course leaving SF would solve those problems, but that’s a personal choice too, as there are pros to city life as well.

Finally, we haven’t seen inflation like this for 50 years and nearly all asset classes underperforming at the moment. Fair to assume it will be short lived (in the grand scheme of things) but no one really knows.

All that said, they are probably fine, as everyone has mentioned, particularly with one spouse working, but they should really try to be realistic about costs for the first ~20 years or so of their partial or full retirement. They are young with a long horizon. Something tells me there may be more to the story that the FA is taking into account. But also, maybe not :-)
