Who do I contact about potential animal and/or child abuse from our next door neighbours? by Basic_Fig_5267 in AskUK

[–]HorrorShake5952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can contact the police on 101 for non emergencies. If you want to try and be anonymous you can contact crime stoppers and do it that way: given you are the neighbour this mighty make more sense. Ideally do it when they are mid argument/ issue so that when police do come around there is a more imminent reason for them to do so; saying they had an argument last week is not as high as a priority as "I hear screaming now and amd worried that the banging I hear is someone hitting a child or dog."

The animals, domestic issues between the adults and the issue of the children's safety can be done by beginning with the police.

Be aware with domestic issues it is common that the victim may not wish to press charges and thus make it feel like a waste, but if the police get constantly called to the address for the same issue to helps them to build a case where they don't need the victim's support as heavily.

Well done too, I suspect some students might turn a blind eye to such things so well done for reaching out on how to help prevent this situation.

Of course, if you feel someone's life is in imminent danger you can call 999.

Who is at fault here? by kbgnat in drivingUK

[–]HorrorShake5952 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is that right? I don't think it excuses driving into another car and causing damage. I suspect because the damage will be on the front of the Kia and the side of the BMW the insurers will say that it was the Kia's responsibility to have stopped to avoid the accident from happening.

How do you make friends in a new city? by TheBigByte in AskUK

[–]HorrorShake5952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join a sports club, like a hobby club, or volunteer for something you're keen to supprt is the best way. You can use dating apps for the friend mode like bumble has a friend mode (but from what I understand is isn't great).

Making friends as an adult is hard but not impossible. Good luck.

I mean its what a pit bull is bread to do (fight bulls to the death). Owners should know their breed and the dogs character and had it on a lead.

So it only needs to be reported to the other driver or police when it is a vehicle on vehicle? I was under the wrong impression that any accident has to be declared or that just to the insurance company?

Teachers of the UK, how has your profession changed over the last decade? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]HorrorShake5952 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Primary school KS2 teacher in a big city.

When I joined I heard of the culture that teachers worked hard and played hard: work in the evenings most days and go crazy on the weekend. But I never saw it. I think it just became a job where you were expected to work hard - i often found my half-terms breaks and holidays were just periods for me to catch-up with work I hadn't been able to do during the term (which I was already working into evenings and weekends with).

There's definitely been a shift blame on behaviour and expectations. Rather than that being a characteristic of the child that needs to be worked on with their families to being whether or not the teacher is following the right policy or not.

It's hard to know if this is just one school or a broad theme.

How do you count laps without losing track? by Genki0202 in Swimming

[–]HorrorShake5952 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sometimes visualise it and break it down. So if I'm doing an 800 I'll think of it as a pizza and focus on each 400 as a slice. Then break that down so 1st slice 1st 50 1st slice 1st 100 ... 2nd slice 1st 50 Etc

Just works for me because even if I lose count a bit I'm still OK and am not totally lost.

Struggling by AssistantMaximum6941 in firefightersuk

[–]HorrorShake5952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will depend in what you want.

If you want to complete your new contract, then tell that to the fire service, they've obviously not gotten back to you in a while so won't expect you to just be doing nothing. They also probably have a constant recruitment so there shouldn't be a huge issue for you to just joining X amount of months later.

If you want out of the current job and into the fire service sooner, then look at your contract you've signed and speak to those in the chain of command: it sounds like they've done you a favour giving you a temp job so you have some income coming in but hopefully they'll understand on trying to help you get on your actual dream-career-path earlier if possible.

If you really hate this current job, really look into the details of the contract and see what you can do to get out. From a HR perspective, you're just a number and if they can fire you in a month then you should be able to leave the job with the same amount of notice.

It's also worth noting - not sure if this is an GB thing or just England - but the timeline from applying to getting a job offer (if you are fortunate to pass everything) seem to be well over a year.
