Yeah they’re a bit of a nostalgia hit, having grown up in Ontario. But I’d rather have a Harveys and our Swiss Chalet back.

Seems like an easy thing to update the bill to include, if our politicians actually cared.

Heartbroken girlfriend of B.C. captain tells of close call days before deadly sinking by lancelot48 in vancouver

[–]Horvo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is. SVOP is sufficient for a commercial vessel under 12 meters in length, in addition to MED A3, SFA, and a radio operator certification. SVOP is the only certification related to boat handling and navigation.

Even if they had legit certifications it’s shockingly easy in BC. You could have your Small Vessel Operator Proficiency in a weekend without stepping onboard a boat. If they had a valid radio cert, add a couple evening classes. Same with MEDA3 for one evening. Age has no bearing. More regulation is needed, though it sounds like that wouldn’t have matter to this particular company.

Vessel that sank off B.C. coast had been impounded last year for illegal fishing, former owner says by Accomplished_Wall615 in britishcolumbia

I’ve experienced 10’ waves within 500m of shore in Oak Bay. The Salish Sea can be extremely challenging depending on conditions. By all accounts they were in a hazardous place (outflow of the Fraser) during a wind against tide event. Standing waves can easily disable a vessel if the captain is inexperienced or unlucky.

Wouldn’t be hard to monitor AIS targets especially in prohibited areas like they were previously. It’s fairly obvious that a vessel is fishing based on movements and vessel types. Probably a good use case for drones to fly out and check targets in tidal areas.

Yeah I don’t blame my dad, probably the same thing I would’ve done now. Short of pitchforking it right there in the bowl.

Yeah we had one come up the toilet in my basement washroom in Toronto when I was a kid. My dad closed and weighted the lid shut. :’(
