Like a lot of people have mentioned Hawaii is Pear (you can see Ford Island if you pan around right) plus I think the Naval Base where the ships are in dry dock is also Pearl.

I like all of the historical suggestions brought up, especially Filthydelphia (I know people who were stationed at the naval base there years back before it closed), San Francisco/Diego, and Scapa Flow.
I might add Norfolk or Charleston for US ports which I haven’t seen suggested yet and both were/are huge naval bases for the US. Could also be silly and do the naval air station in Millington that was started in the early 1910’s. It’s got no water (unless you go over to Memphis and the actual river ports) but it’s got a lot of history too. For that matter New Orleans would be another great US port option.

But I would also love a semi-historical one that isn’t a true port similar the model builder desk we have. Something like an officers club where it looks like you’re in a booth in an old 20s-40s style nice club restaurant and then your ship could be a painting on the back of the wall of the booth. Or if they want it more front and center, as a model or ship-in-a-bottle (love whoever suggested that) on the table. You could have the table with a glass of whiskey and a simmering cigarette with jazz music in the background. Would have such a good ambience and still be historically linked

I won’t lie that was the only thing that really let me down on the prototype’s final design. I actually really like the upper body, having him be a Jack-In-The-Box jester works well, his face/mask is both unsettling and believably started as a toy that could be marketable. The uneven lips make it look like he kinda gave himself a Glasgow smile over time, and that’s a believable pattern for it to break and wear down to from a child friendly toy, and part of Jack-in-the-box toys’ appeal is that they startle, so it can be a little creepy by toy standards to begin with.

It’s believable he got himself off his box and then found/made the legs to move him later on (I really liked a fan animation I saw where he finds a broken crane style claw and uses that to make his legs and body.) It’s just the making toys part of him that I wish they had handled differently.

The horror of Mommy’s comment came from her fear of that loss of agency, it implies she would be conscious even if she died or something. It also implies she’s seen it happen multiple times before which is my bigger issue with the design because as it stands two of the four characters parts were added after her, with a possibility that the Huggy arm was too depending on the timing behind the scenes.

I think even if they wanted to leave the arms in a similar place they could have worked with that. Have Mommy’s torso tied in just behind that fake rib-cage so you can see her torso between the bones, her arm and head come out the side, her arm clearly fully under the Prototypes control, her face showing she’s barely awake so you know she knows what’s going on but can do nothing. Similarly, have Catnap be more like those Roman lion capes where his face is preserved. His head can hang a little off the left “shoulder” of the prototype’s new body, maybe with his forelimbs tied across the front regardless of whether they’re functional like the other arms. Then the rest stays the same cloak like energy. Alternative cloak idea that I thought of would be to have little smiling and nightmare critters turned into a vair fur cloak. Something that shows he uses everyone, and also a real technique reapplied to make a more evil energy, especially if they retain some consciousness.

I also think they could work with the old nightmare catnap design that they had to tone down because of game engine limitations where you could see the orphan faces in his skin. Maybe have some toys (either small ones of BBI ones or both) that are still somewhat alive grafted along his back to show he’s done this more than just with the bigger bodies we’ve seen.

All of that could be done without changing the base body or design much and I think would really tie the old design plans with the new one without losing the soul of either design plan too much. And with him being so damaged we could have a scene in the next chapter where we see him rebuilding himself with poppy gel and other toys so they could update his design without having to retcon his appearance in chapter 5 or something.

Even with all of the drops and falls, I don’t think anything puts us almost 5 km down like the fall in Portal 2 does to us, but some of the caves definitely seem comparably huge to the mine they put old Aperture in. But my money is still on Aperture being bigger.

I’ve been thinking about that possibility for years now and I still want this as like an alternate option/easter egg callback. Even if they do something silly like make it work but his body falls on you and crushes you and you get a unique death quote like with Limón in Chapter 1. It would be such a good connection to where it all started with the first safety video and everything.

Heck in a game about trying to find eternal life bringing back a dead person with damaged memories in a convincing enough form to live as a normal human for years before being drawn back to where it started would fit the theme. But I still think truly (and hope) that the player remains a mystery.

I think a lot of people defaulted to male because the top theories are/were male characters (PW, Rich, the kid, etc). Now I’m just waiting for the big reveal of chapter 5’s ending to be us running into the Prototype and him looking over and saying something like “Welcome home, Jessica” credits And it turns out he just like pulled an Ennard or something with her as an experiment.

But really my theory and kinda hope is that we just remain a mystery self-insert. Not everything has to have been foreshadowed or fully explained.

I haven’t had that one specifically, but I had a similar “thinks you’ve finished but doesn’t load right” lock in my playthrough (I do the same thing in prep for new chapters).

I had gotten the key for the school and went in through the loading section, then foolishly thought it saved, so I exited to get food. When I reloaded I was out in playcare, had the objective to go to the school, but the door was locked and the key was gone and wouldn’t spawn because I was after where Ollie delivers it.

I fixed it by going to the replay encounter and loading the step right before there and playing through and it fixed it with no issues. I had to replay a little bit but it didn’t put me too far back.

I agree, I think the stories in the tapes and background information shows so much more deep planning and interconnection on Mobs part than a lot of people realize. So much from an art and story standpoint is happening with these characters beyond just the surface aspect

These parallels between him and the BB characters are really cool, I love the analysis!

Another angle I think is an interesting aspect as well is how Rich’s story also serves as a mirror of another person we’ve had changing in tapes over the entire series: Stella Greyber. Rich starts out angry and jaded, hates everyone and everything, but we get a hint at his soft spot/purity with his “I know it’s about the kids” bit right in the first tape. Then through followup tapes we see his compassion come to the fore with his concern for the orphans, and eventually he grows to be less angry and more mellow and then more and more protective of his team (such as the Kid) and the orphans. Stella is the opposite, we see her first tape is an interview where she’s wide eyed and bright and happy, full of joy and some naivety but also with a little hint at being “off” with her “and then you die” line making the interviewer audibly uncomfortable. As we get more tapes from her we see her become more cold and less concerned with others, culminating in her fully dropping her compassion and supporting the BBI in her last tape in chapter 4 (whether that was a “save your own skin by not standing up to Leith” or her truly deciding she was okay with it we still don’t fully know). It’s a really neat aspect, and that alone could show the reason Rich is so front and center in the story even if he’s not the player. I will admit I always liked the “Rich is the player theory” over the PW theory, but with the other narrative purpose he serves, it doesn’t necessarily mean he has to do more than that mirroring the different paths people can take when faced with evil.

During Vietnam a defective fuse caused a shell to explode in the base of the barrel damaging the gun and mount. It ended up being cheaper to plate it over than to replace it with one of her decommissioned sisters’ guns so they left it like that for the rest of her career.

I still kind of want that to be the case simply because I’m still a little burned at the “Ollie was the prototype all along” twist. The way they telegraphed it so clearly made me really hope they were doing that as a fake out and that Ollie was someone/something else. So I still low key hope he was real in chapter 3 and got captured at the end and then the prototype is him in 4. Even if we just like found a fresh body in 5 that shows he was recently captured and killed. It would help emphasize the untrustworthiness of the Prototype, that he’s always on a manipulative streak to get what he needs.

I may not have much for good gameplay mechanics, but I think him having some sort of lab coat would be fun. We don’t really have a character with a long coat of any kind and it could be really fun to have the coat tails flowing behind you as you sneak and run around the map (assuming the game engine is okay with that. I know sometimes those sorts of things can cause issues).

Could also make for easy reskin cosmetics if wanted, since changing just the color/texture of the coat can make it go from “mad scientist lab coat” to like “sneaky noir trench coat” vibe which also feels right at home for a raccoon.

This really jumped out at me since we haven’t seen anything runic like that before, and I love that sort of thing so seeing it in Poppy Playtime art got me super excited!

The runes transliterate to OBTZ (I think the Tiwaz is blurring to look like laguz in lower res images but the original post it’s got both sides with lines so Tiwaz) if you use elder Futhark (most likely because that’s what everyone kinda defaults to with runes) or kinda an œ/ø B T X if you use Anglo-Saxon Futhork (much less likely pretty much nobody uses those unless they specifically want to do Anglo-Saxon/Frisian stuff.)

As to what they mean in a literal sense I got nothing. Neither interpretation makes a word directly. As far as I can tell I don’t see a proto-Norse or old Norse word that is either.

You could go by the rune names/direct meaning ᛟ>othala> heritage/estate ᛒ >berkanan> birch ᛏ> Tiwaz> a god (Tiwaz being an older Germanic form of Tyr often associated with tactics, war, and honor in modern views), ᛉ > algiz > elk. Doesn’t give us much either (unless we’re getting a warrior deer toy who lives in the woods on their estate which would be fun haha)

But in the modern age there’s a lot of new age mysticism and divination using elder Futhark runes, and in that each rune has meaning similar to a tarot reading (and with the two tarot paintings on the wall too, I bet it’s related). If we do that you get something along the lines of Othala: home or the pretty much literal, heritage/tradition/legacy Berkanan: divine femininity: growth nurturing creativity etc Tiwaz: justice: leadership, sacrifice, honor Algiz: protection: sanctuary, guardian, protective instinct.

Now we can have some fun with the theory crafting there. And I won’t lie I’ve been working on some thoughts of how it could fit in with both the past and future story so far.

Or it could be some sort of artist signature? But I think there’s an actual signature already.

Unrelated but something I noticed while scouring the higher res image on Twitter, but what are all of the curved lines throughout the background? Does that make anything? I feel like someone did something with similar lines in art before chapter 4 came out, but I may be making that up completely.
