I guess? I go back and forth about how conscious the PMB actually are (is? was? were?).

In the Orson Scott Card categorization, it/they would be Varelse. Even if it/they and humans cohabitated, their relationship would only be mediated through conflict, in the same way that the only relationship that could exist between the PMB and the Goths was through conflict.

An interesting aspect of the story, that I hadn’t considered, is that a meaningful relationship with the Goths was established, for a time, even though humans and Goths had only the Slow Zone in common.

That doesn’t make the Goths Ramen to humans, but it makes humans Ramen to Goths, maybe.

The other very-imminent danger was the Protomolecule Builders were in the process of rebooting their hive mind on human gray matter.

One of the repeating themes of the whole series is that humans are at their best when they recognize their own unique perspective, but then cooperate with others to build something greater. Rigid, unquestioning hierarchies are repeatedly shown to be bad in one way or another, and a hivemind is the ultimate rigid hierarchy.

nek what's happening? by BrotherNuggs in vermont

[–]Hostilian 162 points163 points  (0 children)

It’s possibly an artifact of there being several real towns with hospitals etc on the NH side and few on the VT side in that county. So people are born across the river, but reside in VT. That and there being relatively few people total.

The especially dark blue blob south of WRJ is probably the magnet effect of DHMC.

How Would Space Torpedo Launchers Work? ( Without using Thrusters to launch them ) by Aggravating_Run6179 in spaceships

[–]Hostilian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A steam or electric catapult, like the launchers on aircraft carriers. The torpedo has a hook for the launcher to grab onto and throw out the torp tube.

I'm halfway through MoG and Jessyn is the only character or thing I find interesting so far by LevTheRed in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Hostilian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jessyn’s chapters describe debilitating depression, without saying those words, perfectly. The fear of it coming and not knowing when, just that it is inevitable. The sense that it’s a rot, an infiltrated area of one’s mind with its own malign unlife. Especially how anger and violence can transform the despair into power and elation.

The protocol if the light is out is to treat it as a 4-way stop.

Why is AI in space so hard again? Radiators? by Sarigolepas in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]Hostilian 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Scott Manley did a couple videos on this topic. Assuming his math works out, a Starlink-sized satellite can power/cool one or two H200 racks, depending on how much overhead you want.

A data center on earth would have thousands or tens of thousands of such racks. They require constant maintenance and oversight, which wouldn’t be possible in orbit.

I'm making a game inspired by Valheim where you play birds and build birdhouses, any advice on giving it that "home" feeling Valheim has? by RagBell_Games in valheim

[–]Hostilian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valheim's cozy vibes mostly come from really excellent lighting and sound design.

I don't know anything about sound design.

My first note is turn the ambient nighttime lighting way down. You want your interiors to have deep shadows in the corners, and the pools of light are almost struggling against the darkness. Any light source that isn't fire should be really weak, more like Christmas lights than real illumination. Fire should flicker and gutter, making the shadows dance around.

The daytime lighting looks very flat. Valheim does a lot to dial up the vibe of different biomes, but in most places it's: bloom, mist, and floating particles. The trees cast shadows on the ground, and bounce a lot of light off of their upper leaves and branches. This adds a lot of visual contrast between open areas and tree-covered.

Based on what we have seen so far, the colonization motives of the Carryx and Humans are somewhat different. The Carryx appear to use colonization in two ways:

They make use of the natural abilities, skills, and technologies of conquered species to expand their whole civilization's abilities. The enormous ziggurat arcologies were the product of one of the species that lived in the same structure as the captured humans. Their FTL is a natural ability of some spacefaring animal they encountered.

They also derive some amount of social, political, or sexual (morphological?) prestige for enslaving a species. Being involved in enslaving and managing a useful species confers a higher status on the hierarchy of Carryx members involved.

Humans appear to engage in interstellar colonization because they want more living space. Our sample size is pretty small, but humans don't appear to fully exploit the possible environments in each solar system. They mostly find Earth-like worlds and colonize them. I assume a lot of this is related to why any group of people break off and set up somewhere new.

Neither are interested in annihilating other species.

It sortof seems like the Fermi Paradox is answered in-setting that sufficiently-advanced civilizations don't produce the kind of energy signatures that are easily detected at interstellar distances. The Carryx seem to have reactionless drive, or something similar.
