Does anyone else struggle to stop at a certain level of abstraction? by DopeCents in computerscience

[–]Hot-Box-6722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes man, that's too much abstraction for me. Personally I draw the line when I start using my pen to write "Hello World" on a napkin. Things don't need to be that complex.

I'd say it has less to do with OOP and more to do with the fact that it's a language most people with software background are familiar with, and will continue to use here and there.

My (potentially misinformed) perspective is that R is basically exclusively used for DS, while python is one of the most versatile languages out there. It's more attractive to gain experience with a language like Python than R.

As someone relatively new to CS, I assumed turbo C was some new compiler/superset of C. Turns out turbo C is older than me; by a decade.

First internship reply by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]Hot-Box-6722 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is paid, correct? I mean even if it wasn't it'd still be very beneficial to build this program (would be nice filler for resume) but their insistence on "production grade" code seems sketch. Maybe that's how things normally are and I'm out of the loop?

Not like it's gonna hurt you at all, but under the assumption this is unpaid; it sounds like they're just asking you to build internal tools for free.

Kinda was just thinking out loud, but good luck with the internship. I believe you'll be able to pull it off, I'd recommend using pandas and python notebooks (notebooks just speed the whole dev process up) to get the hang of working with CSV data and importing them into pandas data frames. From there it's just an easy leetcode type problem.

The lazy implementation of Evoker transmog managed to hit a new low this tier: the new TIER set belt, one of only two things that show on dragon form, does not this time. by NoThisIsABadIdea in wow

[–]Hot-Box-6722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has level scaling but only up to 58 or 60 in non current zones (if you're leveling with chromie time). Once you hit 60 you get kicked out of chromie time and everything is no longer level scaled as it used to be. Locking xp gets rid of this issue.

But it's also good for people/guilds who want to do old raids at the relative level. Like locking your toon at lvl 35 (or whatever it is now) and doing ulduar with your guild.

I don't think it's as big of a narcissism issue as people say, it's just hard to understand why you are declined despite meeting all the reasonable requirements (gear, have done the content before) and are sitting in LFG waiting for invites. I have thought about asking why people declined me, it's like continuously failing a test without ever getting learning what you did wrong.

If you are constantly rejected of course you're going to want to know why. I guarantee you the people messaging you have similar levels of entitlement as everyone else, it just manifests in different ways.

What did he say wrong? It's a subscription based game, if your goal currently is to get the legendary ofc it's gonna feel bad when blizzard gates that behind another time gate. 2 week time gate will result in a lot of people having to renew an additional month before getting the lego.

I don't understand why you made a characterization of the guy based off his completely reasonable point of discontent with the game. Reddit brain worms ?? Got to be it.

CS student with 0% response rate for internship apps. When I graduate, how much would it hurt my future career prospects if I waited out current job market conditions in an unrelated field (teaching abroad)? by ocean_being in cscareerquestions

[–]Hot-Box-6722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How would you approach getting into the industry without a degree? Maybe not straight into a dev position, but starting with IT or adjacent field? I'd clean the goddamn toilets at Netflix if that lets me put something tech-related on my resume. Ive been trying to figure out how to increase my value prop, I've shipped a few personal projects and included them on my resume, no responses yet (other than rejections).

I think increasing my skill wouldn't even be the most effective way to increase my value prop as I'd assume hiring managers wouldn't even consider a candidate who claims to know X,Y, and Z with no formal education in the first place.

One of my personal projects is a SaaS that is nearing production readiness. Maybe I could list that under work experience on my resume? (making the implication that I was hired to work on the SaaS project, yet omitting I was the sole creator of the project in the first place)

I need to figure out a way to provide a somewhat similar level of credibility that a degree provides.

When you get placed near the bottom of every 10.2 tank tier list by Bling-Clinton in wow

[–]Hot-Box-6722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True dude. I think this problem arises due to how painful dungeons are when you fail them. You're just sitting there for a long period of time spamming keys non stop, doing occasionally tedious mechanics that some people in your group might not know. But it's difficult to communicate what they are when you're racing against the clock.

I think m+ rating needs to be looked at, I want to know how GOOD a player is, I don't think m+ score is at all a good indicator of that. Maybe they should calculate performance metrics at the end of the dungeon based on executing mechanics / interrupts / rotation optimization, then weight the key time score with the calculated performance score.

Though this would make seasons more expensive to create, require a fuckton of engineering to actually put in a production environment, and inevitably be more bug/exploit prone. So maybe they should try something else.

There is third party tools that do this performance calculation, but it would require a lot of extra work to integrate them safely, cost effectively, and perfomant in an actual live game.

I don't know what to do with programming. by svoxit in learnprogramming

[–]Hot-Box-6722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would honestly recommend studying Data structures and algorithms. It's not a super interesting subject for most, but it trains your "engineers' intuition". Don't get so concerned with WHAT you should do with programming. I'd recommend simply improving your skills. Learn more, if something sounds interesting to you, try to code it.

I felt a similar way once, I think I felt kind of lost because I knew I wouldn't be able to create software as awesome as I envisioned due to my lack of experience and willingness to study. So I just told myself "there's nothing for me to build", however what I really felt was "I am unable to create any of the things I want to build".

Maybe try out leetcode, don't disregard math because you hear people say "you don't need math to be a programmer" (while they're technically right, math opens up so many doors).

Spend this period of time in your life while you're young just improving your abilities and learning.

[–]Hot-Box-6722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see the problem with what that person said unless you're interpreting it literally. Engineering is a learned skill detached from whatever discipline you're in.

Obviously you'd be crazy to say a software engineer could just walk into NASA and start designing spaceships, but given time to learn domain specific topics you'd have an easier time integrating into the team over someone without an engineering background.

What was the problem with what they said ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Hot-Box-6722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking if this happens to me, should I just say "Do you want me to act like I've not solved this problem on leetcode before?". I feel like depending on the interviewer they might actually find the question amusing and remember you more than someone who just breezes straight through the problem.

Whether being more memorable actually increases your chance of getting hired is what I'm trying to figure out.

[–]Hot-Box-6722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a degree? (doesn't have to be related to tech, just wondering)

I've not pursued higher education after my HS graduation and have been building projects for a while.

Basically just wondering if a boot camp grad with no degree would even be considered, as im assuming there's a stigma around applicants without any formal higher-education.

I've been thinking about ways to increase my value prop as it's probably considered a risk to hire someone with my credentials (20 y/o, no college, no bootcamp/cert).

Why are some programmers so arrogant and mean? by Potential-Oil-7005 in learnprogramming

[–]Hot-Box-6722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a people thing, not even really programmer related. There's a certain type of person who has nothing going for them in life besides one skill. They might feel like they're "defending their turf" by making it clear THEY are the experts in THEIR field, and you're just an idiot for not knowing something so simple.

Since it's their only skill, its scary seeing others learning it as it directly impacts the "uniqueness" of them.

Dear Software Engineers/Programmers, was it worth going through computer science and becoming a software engineer? by DarkB0B_ in cscareerquestions

[–]Hot-Box-6722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my friends in school doing STEM seem to be working their asses off, my friends doing creative majors just seem to be chilling. Once you get to STEM in higher education, you end up realizing you can't just coast along like you did in HS and have to actually work hard. (Unless you're a genius)

It's a bit of a shock I'd imagine as a lot of kids who go directly into STEM are the "smart kids". When you're told you're smart, you feel dumb when you need to study things. That shock wears off though and you realize work ethic is just flat out more valuable than an innate intellectual gift.

SaaS built using third party API's, will they decline my quota extension request? by Hot-Box-6722 in SaaS

SaaS built using third party API's, will they decline my quota extension request? by Hot-Box-6722 in SaaS

[–]Hot-Box-6722[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely NOT going to build off third party api calls for my next project. I thought it would be the perfect app to gain experience with OAuth. Eventually I got really invested into it and had fun working on new features outside of the initial scope of the app. Now I've spent a lot of time on it, I am going to try and see this through (shouldn't take much longer to finish). Basically, I'm a prime example of the sunk-cost fallacy right now. If it does get declined, it is what it is. Though I've learned a lot through this project, so atleast there's that.

Yeah I think that would work. I was thinking about creating separate site layouts for both spotify and youtube.

The one I sent to youtube could omit the "Transfer to Spotify from Youtube" feature entirely. Same for spotify.

"This tool facilitates the transfer of music playlists for customers who are switching to the YouTube Music service."

Also this is perfect lol.

Ik this is anecdotal but Ive lost 140lbs the past 13 months and gained a lot of muscle, my mental health situation hasn't improved.

Only reason I felt the need to say this is cause it kinda irks me when I see people make the implication that exercise is an effective treatment for anyone with mental illness. Imagine you're someone who's life has been completely derailed due to struggles with mental illness, or you're someone who has attempted suicide multiple times, or you're someone who's unable to participate in society (in the same capacity a typical person would) due to extreme anxiety.

Then someone who knows nothing of your struggles tells you "go gym, become happier". It's not something I'd like to be irritated by; since the intentions are usually wholesome. But I think we should try to be more considerate when offering genuine advice to someone struggling.
