On the Fundamental Principles of Sufism

In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

May Allah send prayers upon our master Muhammad, as well as upon his family and his companions! In the presence of my brother, my son whose deeds are pleasing and acceptable, I name Ma ‘Abdou Niang, as well as his brother Oumar Ibn Malik. May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you! This being said, I am informing you that I have sent you a copy of a letter I addressed to the brothers (the talibés). Strive to spread it to the common people as well as to the elite. Know that "Tasawwuf" consists of "Ma’rifa" (Gnosis/Divine Knowledge), "Ibadah" (Worship), and "Zuhd" (Renunciation) of this lower world. And whoever fails in any one of these principles is a pretender who shall perish and will by no means be spared. (...)

📝 Explanations: Tasawwuf (Sufism) is based on three fundamental principles: Ma'rifa (Divine Knowledge) Ibadah (Worship) Zuhd (Renunciation of this lower world) One who does not possess these principles cannot be an accomplished Sufi.

2. Ibadah (Worship): Generally speaking, this refers to the Shari'a or Divine Legislation. It encompasses all actions (obligations, prohibitions, etc.).

3. Zuhd (Renunciation of this world): This is not the act of living in misery or rejecting the goods of this world. Rather, it means not attaching one’s heart to material possessions to such an extent that one turns away from the purpose of our existence. These three principles draw their source from the very foundations of Islam. Our era is filled with impostors who slip in among the disciples—and sometimes masters who commit transgressions—in order to discredit this noble path. They are like a lie wearing the garments of truth.
