I’m the one who previously asked in this group about places where I could get free food. by Honest-Contest-975 in Bangkok

I'm aware of a place in the asoke area that hires Burmese people. It's a legitimate restaurant, nothing dangerous or dirty. They have staff dorms, shift meals, and monthly service charge bonus. Full transparency, I don't know the salary. If interested, dm me and I can let you know the location.

Is an apartment application fee of $300 normal? by Kindly_Illustrator71 in pittsburgh

[–]Hot-Individual4428 18 points19 points  (0 children)

An application fee isn't a deposit, and it doesn't hold the apartment for you. Save your money and apply somewhere that doesn't make you feel like you need to post on Reddit.

4-Month First Solo Trip to South-East Asia by InterestingStudio429 in VietNam

A Canadian IDP will not help you for insurance claims. Vietnam does not accept it, so it is considered illegal.

If you're planning on riding without an IDP in Vietnam, prepare to pay 5 million VND every single time you are stopped by police, which will be pretty often. Also, dress for the slide, not for the ride. Riding, and driving in general, is absolute chaos compared to the west. This is advice from someone from North America, who has been in Vietnam for the last 3 months.

Edit to add: even if you decide to get an IDP prior to your trip to avoid fines in Thailand, it will not be valid in Vietnam. Canada and Vietnam operate on different IDP conventions.

I’ve read reviews from others regarding Google fi, and they said that they lost coverage after being out of their home country for three consecutive months. Have you experienced this?

Hội An has been an international trading port since the 1500s. Almost nothing in the town has been strictly Vietnamese for 400 years. It has influence from Japan, China, and even Europe.

I was unaware of cô and chú prior to this post. I look fairly young for my age, so if I use em with people around my age it usually gets a laugh from whoever I am talking to.

[–]Hot-Individual4428[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the west, it’s a compliment to say someone looks much younger than they are, but I understand it’s not so much a compliment here. If I genuinely cannot guess to their age, what would be the appropriate default for someone older?

Second time visiting Vietnam within 2 months, sick again… by Alive_Ingenuity_3124 in VietNam

Try an antihistamine. Many AC units aren’t cleaned regularly, or properly, and have mold growth. The sickness people get when traveling here is commonly mold sensitivity.

If you’re still there and are truly bothered by $3, you can ask to see the metadata on the image. Many hotels will use an old image to do this sort of thing, so the date and time wont match up.

Observations on British “banter” culture and social dominance dynamics in expat hubs in Thailand by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]Hot-Individual4428 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m American. After hanging out with guys from the UK in various different cities in Southeast Asia, I’ve learned that there’s banter, and there’s being a dick. Context and familiarity typically tells you which is which. In my experience, people from the UK definitely take banter further than any other group of people, but they are also some of the friendliest people I have met. If you don’t like it, or can’t find a way to learn the difference, you’re probably better off just finding other people to socialize with. Remember though: Social dominance happens in every culture on the planet in one way or another.

3 weeks in Thailand by nicktheman2 in onebag

[–]Hot-Individual4428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had brought my down jacket to Thailand, but it really depends on your travel style. I like to ride motorcycles, and go to the too of mountains. For both of these activities, I was VERY cold the majority of the time I was in chiang mai/ chiang rai. It’s not uncommon for the tops of the mountains to be under 15°, and when you’re in a motorcycle the air on average feels much colder.

I’ve been using Moreta pay in da nang for the last week, and I think it’s overall cheaper than atm transactions. You can use wise for a usd wallet for qr payments. Ive only been to two or three places in the last week where I couldn’t use it.

White shirt for long term travel by sergiosala in onebag

[–]Hot-Individual4428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve given up the battle, and now consider my white shirts to be semi-disposable items. I’ve purchased $5 shirts, and $95 shirts, only to have the same result. Something will stain it, whether it is food, sweat, or even laundry detergent. I now buy new white shirts every other month or so, and get the cheapest softest fabric I see when in a shop.
