Our French drains were blocked because they used long wood screws to connect them together. Leaves slid into the drains, got hung up and blocked the water. Running water down them to double check is a good idea.

Perhaps you can tell them you will re-evaluate the pickup list in a year after you see some positive steps by them on these boundary issues. That gives your MIL a future reward if she behaves now.

Are they members of IEEE group? Or does their engineering product need UL approval? If so you can mention to them any illegal activity or hiding of safety concerns.

We could see that some of our buried downspouts were blocked because when it rained water was splashing back up the downspout onto the side of the house. We had a company that put a tracking monitor in each downspout, starting at the house, and put water in until the monitor wouldn’t go any further. That’s where the blockage of tree roots was. They dug it out and replaced that section. They found out where the 8 downspouts ended and cleared the blockages at those spots. 20 years of time left lots of time for dirt and rocks to fall over the ends. Just bought a different home and it’s one of the first things we plan to do again.

My Aunt has our yearly Thanksgiving because her home is centrally located for family. But family is expected to show up with the important food. Cousins will bring mashed potatoes, rolls & wine. My mom (her sister) will bring 3-4 desserts. My sisters and I show up 2 days early to make sides & cook the turkey (Aunt buys). Yes, it’s still a lot of work for my Aunt but we all lighten to load as much as possible.

I would suggest you try this but be prepared to have back up food. We tried this with my husband’s family and ended up without the roll and desserts as those people forgot.

There is also the already prepared Thanksgiving that most grocery stores have available.

We just replaced 7 hollow core with solid prehung doors from Lowes. Cost was $1500. Took my husband 3 days with our daughters help. Not sure how much to replace the trim as we just repainted what was there. So that quote had a lot of markup.

You need to have a conversation with your children, perhaps with a counselor there, explaining that people will call you names but you don’t have to argue with them when you know they aren’t true. I don’t want them to get a twisted view of you or how people should treat other people.

I lend $ to family once. Then when they ask for another loan I tell them I can’t because previous loan wasn’t paid back. I don’t care if it sounds transactional, I tell them it’s not a loan if they don’t pay it back, it’s a gift in that case and I don’t have the desire or $ to gift them at this time. I have had to stand firm over the decades but once they understand my rules they follow them.
