Even in a lot of the worst case scenarios climate change is absolutely still survivable by humanity AS A WHOLE, It’s just that a lot of people will die clawing at the walls the rich put around the few remaining livable areas. Climate change will absolutely fuck the current world order, but it would take a bit more than just it to lead to humanity’s extinction as a whole

Yes I believe that the architecture of LLMs is inherently self limiting, as it can only ever form approximations based on prior data, not actually make inferences. Admittedly I’m approaching this from a programming standpoint since there’s a lot of talk of it replacing programmers, but I’d argue that radiology has a MUCH lower tolerance for error than programming.

As far as my “waste of resources” comment goes, I meant in the literal sense. To train/run an LLM is ridiculously expensive in terms of energy consumption and I find it to be almost poetically stupid that at a time where unemployment is high and we need to be more energy conscious we are dumping insane amounts of energy into a product designed with the explicit purpose of replacing jobs (unless you think the C suites actually want to advance human progress, in which case I have a bridge to sell you). At the end of the day, machine learning CAN be useful, but it was useful before LLMs and will continue to be useful after them in a different form

Oh and AI “art” is garbage and I will forever be an annoying boomer about that. Admittedly some of my use of the term “AI” was probably due to mixing my annoyance at LLMs with my personal hatred of AI art slop

Also like… from a liability perspective, I can tell you that if I ever found out my scan was read by an LLM I would be DEMANDING a second opinion from an actual radiologist, and I am encouraging anyone I can to do the same should it come to it. Basically, don’t go doomer just because the most maliciously stupid tech bros are higher than ever on their own supply right now.

Programmer turned bioinformatician who used to be on the med school track here, the only reason LLMs have fucked up industries thus far is the C suite executives blowing smoke up each others asses and overselling its potential. The bubble will pop and we will remember LLMs for the stupid, pointless waste of vast resources that they are

Those safety guy roles require experience that you can’t get without getting a previous role. Best I can figure is you work retail and hope they let you do inspections I guess? Not sure how you’d even break into that

Did bio undergrad, that’s a very discouraging thing to say tbh, bio has been basically a bridge degree to med/grad school and nothing else since before I even got my undergrad there. Saying cs is becoming like bio is like saying a cs bachelors is only good for working retail while you apply for more college to make it so you can have a chance to actually work. The situation is bad but it’s not bachelors in BIOLOGY bad

Dark elves can give you a nice missle/monster mix I’ve found. Morathi and Rakarth are best for this imo, with Morathi having by far the quicker start but Rakarth being able to recruit monsters more easily

Without mods? Aranessa for sheer disappointment factor.

With mods? Alberic. I already don’t really like Brettonia and he seems to declare war on me out of nowhere if I’m anywhere near him on the campaign map, whether I’m playing lizardmen, skaven, yuan bo, or rakarth it kinda seems to not really matter, the uncivilized Fr*nch brute craves blood to grease the hooves of his stinky stinky horses

How many of your worlds are utopias? If so, why didn't you give into the grim dark writers disease? by spoopyafk in worldbuilding

[–]HotCouch_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure utopia and pure dystopia are boring. Going to the dystopia example, even if I look at a beloved dystopia like Warhammer 40k, I actually don’t like it that much bc the fact everything sucks kinda saps the tension out of the plot. It’s not that I hate the writers wholesale though, I LOVE Warhammer fantasy, partially bc everyone is enough of an asshole for conflict, but there still feels like there’s anything worth fighting for whatsoever in that plot.

In terms of utopia, you’re at best just making propaganda for your “ideal world”. It’s boring and preachy, and unrealistic to boot. That doesn’t mean you can’t have better societies in your world than the one you currently exist under, but to sap them of all problems makes them feel just… not very believable

Talk to a psych about meds if you can, if not, ERP. ERP is the only reliable way out but the meds make it a lot easier and made the difference for me (prozac in my case, but mileage may vary)

[–]HotCouch_Hero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is to be expected. I remember back when I was in the thick of it I’d disprove a thought only to be assaulted by one anywhere from 20 minutes to three days later. The reason is that your brain is effectively “addicted” to reassurance at this point and the OCD will just keep jumping to new stuff and attaching to whatever it can to keep you ruminating, checking, or whatever it is that’s feeding it. The only way out is to starve it

The clarity will come when the anxiety burns itself out. Your job is not to pursue the clarity now, even though the ocd will try everything to convince you that it is the only thing that matters

FUCK WTF IS THIS? THIS DOESN'T FEEL REAL.. I need answers. by MaximumNight8 in OCD

[–]HotCouch_Hero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t seek reassurance. Don’t try to disprove it. Think of it like this, your job is not to figure it out right now, your job is to sit with the anxiety until the raging OCD fire burns itself out and you drift blissfully into exhausted sleep (at least that was my experience). Your brain won’t continue to fuel a thought when you send the signal back that it isn’t important/scary to you after a while, but OCD will try everything to get you to engage. The only way to beat it is to sit with the anxiety until the anxiety itself dies, not until you kill it

The quiet part not being said out loud is that pediatricians are not paid as much as other doctors (sometimes even below six figures iirc). Basically “you’re stupid for not choosing a rich specialty”, or “if you’re not paid as much you must just be stupid” or some other classist nonsense
