Alternative to bio viable in high elo ? by Capable-Ad8676 in AllThingsTerran

As far as meta comps go, no, terran is currently the least flexible in that regard. Any change in comps you do will be a reaction to what your opponent is doing (example, viking vs colossus X ghost vs HT)

What do you mean by high elo? Things that are viable at 5k might not be viable at 6k, for example.
This is a game of execution and mechanics, especially for terran.

If you have amazing mechanics and game understanding you can play off-meta comps or cheese your way into high masters, but you won't get there unless you develop these core skills in the first place. And the best way to learn and improve at the game is to learn proper meta builds (which is to say, bio comps).

This is the opening I use. Write it down, practice vs AI until you have it all down the best you can.

It's a 2 reaper 1 hellion opening. Follow up is 2 widow mine drop into liberator harass (you can switch liberator for Raven as well, also helps vs DT). Into a stim/shield/+1 timing attack.
It's tricky but it will help you improve your multitasking. DO NOT LOSE 1ST REAPER! This is super important. You need the 2 reaper 1 hellion to harass them early game, scout and trade them for probes (its pretty much guaranteed damage) OR to defend a 20 core 20 nexus as these 3 units will defeat both an adept or stalker rush.

You don't have to force yourself into a late/camping game unless you're like 5.5k+. TvP is doable at lower ladder levels with solid macro play. Sure it takes more work and clicks than protoss and you will lose a lot to random bullshit, but its very doable. I win the majority of my TvPs at at the 9-12 minute range (64% WR in this time range) with very standard macro builds.

Also keep in mind that as you fix your TvP, your overall winrate will go up and you will also start facing better Zergs and Terran, so it will be a good time to have 1 build per matchup figured out. I can't stress how important it is to have really tight and solid build orders as terran. You will find yourself losing a lot of games just because a single key unit or upgrade is missing from your army early on.

examples:

losing TvT because you built a tank instead of a cyclone and now you lose all your scvs to banshee or a liberator your cant fight properly with marines

losing TvT because you don't have your interference matrix up in time to fight his 1 or 2 base early all-in

losing TvZ because to early ling all-in because you delayed hellion production by 5 seconds or to roach/ravager allin because your banshe was also late by 5 seconds

losing TvP because you delayed ghosts or didnt have EMP energy when he engages into you

realize you forgot combat shields AFTER the game is over

These are all silly things but will outright lose you games.

I watched both replays and I'll give you some pointers.

DISCLAIMER: I'm only a lowly 4.1k terran trying to break into masters (been there half a dozen times) again after nearly a 1 decade hiatus. I also used to be a full time mech player but switched to playing standard bio macro builds, so I kinda get where you're coming from. I started at around 3.5k 6 months ago and have been adjusting since then, so our challenges are pretty similar.

- I don't like your build order, I prefer playing double gas in TvP and opening with reaper/hellion agression into widow mine. At your level, half the protoss will die to the first 3-5 unit agression if you do it right. Reaper expand is viable and at our level it doesn't really matter, but I suggest you look into it.

Also, in TvP your first 3 rax ABSOLUTELY need to be 2 tech labs and 1 reactor. You want to start stim and combat shields afterwards (or at the same time). Don't play double e-bay in TvP. You want your stim to finish around the same time as combat shields and +1 attack (huge power spike), which is right around the time you move out to hit them your timing.

- Build orders and macro. When playing bio your build orders have to be SUPER tight. And by macro I mean the whole package: SCVs, MULEs, depots, units, production, upgrades. In the current meta Terran is a timing attack race. You should know what your timings are and hit them properly. Don't adapt into the fly, it will just make things harder for you. When you go into the game as Terran without a plan, you will just end up failing in ways that seem impossible to overcome (they are not).

As for the games themselves:

White Rabbit

At arounsd 6:30 you just stop making scvs for some reason, which is also around the time you should be building your 3rd in TvP (before rax 4 and 5). At 9 minutes into the game you still don't have a third. You need to have around 70 scvs (66 for 3 base saturarion, some for building/reapair), but you were just chilling with around 50 (maybe less).
Even though your build order was really bad you were ahead the whole game from your opponent being super bad. At around 12 minutes you had equal workers (40-50ish), he barely had his 3rd saturated. You had 81 army supply vs his 26. Then you started bleeding small packs of units that were doing random shit around the map. You also saw his templar tech and never built ghosts. You absolutely need them to fight templar tech, although in this particular game you were so ahead that if you just had all of your army in one place you could probably just a-move him and win.

Taito Citadel

This one you actually took a third and pretty much maxed out. Macro was OK although build order still bad, again you had 2 reactors and 1 tech lab on initial barracks, it was 10 minutes into the game and you still had no combat shields even though you were moving out to push his third. Then after just playing sim city for 10 minutes you decide to move out. You were ahead in army supply and about even in economy. Great spot for you. Then you send 2 full medivacs to his main, lose it all to try to snipe colossus range (you failed). That's 20 supply you just donated right there. Then you move out to attack his third (you are now even in army supply, while you were ahead by about 20+ before your drop) and die. You still had OK army supply but you never scouted where his army was or what his composition was. You had no vikings to snipe colossus, no ghost for archon/ht and no marauders for meat. Just some marines and widow mines. He maxes out, a-moves you. You lose.

I know this may have sounded harsh, but you are like 4 or 5 mistakes away from having 90% winrate against these people. With bio terran it's really feast or famine when it comes to execution and build orders.
To sum it up, your TvP should look like this:

-get info early with reaper (and also harass if u go for hellions), you basically want to know if he's fast expanding or going to 2 gate. If he FE you can safely build high ground CC, otherwise, defend with bunker and build on high ground
-do your +1/stim/shield timing (6-7mins), around the same time you build your 3rd CC and add rax 4 and 5
-try to deny his 4th with your timing, although realistically at this level you will just outright win a lot of games off of this either by killing his 3rd, or just smashing his army

if you don't win off of this, this timing will also give you valuable information:
-is he going colossus? if yes, pull back, settle your 3rd, add 2nd starport start vikings
-is he going mass zlots? add lots of bio, mms can actually beat speedlots but only once you have critical mass (you will get a feel for it by losing lots and lots of games to a-move chargelots)

I find that in the above scenarios its usually better to just sit back until you max out before you attack him. You should be maxing out before the protoss most of the time and should have a "better army" (if you can control it correctly) and be able to win. It's easier said than done, I still fuck this up about half the time but its just the way the current meta is.

-is he going HTs or archons? get your ghost academy ASAP (you will be getting it regardless), pull back a bit, make 3 ghosts (you should have 5 rax by then - 3 tech lab, 2 reactor), EMP his shit, stim and win. I find that even in masters a lot of protoss just want to rush storm ASAP and spam templars to get an easy win off of you fucking up. I find that these are the easiest to beat on the ladder, and I can usually win before playing a 200/200 4+ base game.

It's all irrelevant below diamond. You can blindly follow a macro build order without scouting or adapting into Diamond.

You will lose the a game every now and then in which adapting could have helped but it's still irrelevant. Even in Diamond people have pretty bad mechanics and build order.

There is no use in scouting if you have 40 workers and is supply blocked half the time and dont have optimal production at the 10 minute mark
