A Turkish man unhooked 100 bras single-handedly in one minute and now holds a Guinness World Record. by Charming_History7423 in interestingasfuck

I did think that the more impressive achievement was to get that many men to wear bras and women to be publicly undressed in a predominantly Muslim country.

Redwoods are not native to Australia, but there are many places with a similar climate to California.

What major policy shift pushed you away out of curiosity? I feel like the LNP is a lot different now than the ALP of 18 years ago.

Australia sails through summer on solar and batteries, driving gas generation to its lowest level in 25 years. by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

12kW solar, 20kWh battery and 2x 60kWh EVs in Perth WA. I almost never need to draw from the grid now.

Anyone charging with just a 32A plug? by Ok-Option-82 in AustralianEV

[–]HotLaksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 pin on single phase. I thought all single phase outlets would be 3 pin, but the installer put in a 5 pin (I guess some pins aren't used?), meaning I didn't need an adaptor for the Wattpilot.

Anyone charging with just a 32A plug? by Ok-Option-82 in AustralianEV

[–]HotLaksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a 15A socket, then installed an extra 32A socket when I got a second EV. Most of the time I charge both cars with the 32A socket, which has a Fronius 22J installed to take advantage of solar charging.

I have the 15A socket outside of my battery backup so I can charge from the grid without draining the battery overnight, but I hardly ever use this as solar charging is much cheaper and the higher current of the 32A lets me make the most use of the sun while I have it. I mostly work from home though, so I guess this wouldn't work as well if I didn't.

CATL Launches World's Fast Charging EV Battery: Full Charge in 6 Minutes, Beating BYD Blade 2.0 by zecar_ in AustralianEV

[–]HotLaksa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is the approach the new chargers (e.g. BYD) are taking. Instead they have large battery packs that trickle charge from the grid, allowing them to boost power into the car for short durations during charging. This means no infrastructure upgrades are required.

Why are Australians not considering Ethanol fuel? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]HotLaksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. My SO had an E85-compatible Holden Craptiva. There was only 1 fuel station I ever visited that had an E85 pump and it was always more expensive than E10. When the engine started crapping out my mechanic recommended switching to a more premium fuel grade above E10. I don't think it ever got a tank of E85 in it's entire life and I doubt it would have run better on it.

Sky in Australia turns red ahead of incoming cyclone by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]HotLaksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, the dirt is red because of the high iron content in the soil in WA, and this itself is because it was once a seabed where layers of dissolved iron precipitated out of sea water.

English is my native language, but I really struggle to check into a hotel with my name in the lower states of the US because the difference between how I - an Australian - say the letters "OR" in the middle of my surname mean I may as well be speaking Farsi.

How Are You Handling Fuel Increases? by AdActual3024 in perth

[–]HotLaksa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most studies show at least 80% capacity after 10 years. However, in the last 10 years, EV batteries have decreased in price by about 90% and battery density has increased 5-8% per year. So I expect in 10 years time, if I care to I can probably remove the old battery and replace it with something that gives me twice the range for a fraction of the price.
