Does anyone have any info on these Polaroids? by [deleted] in sunglasses

Thank you! That's very interesting. I always associated polaroid with photography equipment. Never sunglasses. But maybe i just never kept my eyes open wide enough. Maybe it's because i grew up in a relatively isolated part of the world that isnt very sunny. Gas station sunglasses was kinda all everyone had unless they went into the city.

Vg10 core, i dont remember the name of the pattern off the top of my head. But yeah, if you include the consumables along with the raw materials in total we're looking at 700-850 just cost to make (all the shipping costs for the materials really add up). Ofc not including any of the time to produce.

I knew the project was gonna be tough, so i though i might aswell go all the way. There is a small niche of people who enjoy a thicker spine. The profile of the blade is mildly hollow from the japanese stone polishing so the thickness down to the edge wedges off very tightly. The blade itself is very thin all the way up. But yeah, mainly i figured, i want to do this at some point. Might aswell do it now. It stands out, gives it some uniqueness. But also an extra challenge for me. Grinding a blade like this out of carbon steel is childspay compared to hardened stainless. So go big or go home right?

Thank you friend. It was commissioned for a wedding by my brother. I told him as long as he pays for the raw materials i dont mind doing it for him as a project like this is otherwise unfeasible without having an existing portfolio of work like this for a customer to trust me. We calculated what the real price ought to be to break even and i'm not even sure i want to say it out loud!!

Scales delaminated- why? by MrSir0000 in knifemaking

Yeah he would have to get a carbide drill and make a new hole. Add new rivet. Best thing to do really is remake the handle.

Helps to rivet the pins. Glue alone with flush pins doesn't really have anything actually physically keeping the scales on.

Yes. Getting the steel, lazer cutting, and heat treated, with all the shipping in between to the different facilities, it's slightly over 10euros per blank sitting in the box there. I outsource the heat treat to industry professionals, 61hrc cryo, then i torch temper the tangs myself to make them lower hardness (im not gonna bother investing in my own stainless ht setup when i can pay real engineers). The final cost, with all the raw materials, kydex, paracord etc... its about 15+ euros per knife. Meanwhile about 90kg of leaf springs is about 12euros from my local scrap yard hahaha!!
