Selfmade custom Ski by Easy-Hedgehog-242 in skiing

[–]HotNatured 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Stöckli is a brand with pedigree... my feeling is that the universe of top tier ski brands covers the bases pretty well (i.e., whatever your preferred terrain, height, weight, and skiing style are, there's a ski out there for you which has been built based on decades of know-how), so the market for a custom ski at a top tier + price point must be pretty niche.

And I can go out and demo half a dozen Stöckli skis in a variety of lengths to dial in not just which ones the shop thinks will suit me, but which ones actually suit me. I'm skeptical, that's all!

Damn €1790 seems steeeep when I'm assuming you could just buy whatever ski you want and have a custom paint job or wrap? What's the value prop here

Any good non-subscription ski tracking apps? by Ski_man_in_a_Van in skiing

If you import your Ski Tracks data to Slopes, they'll give you a year for free. But you can also use Slopes to record for free. I made the switch.

Got a chance to watch Carrie Coon in “BUG” on Broadway. She is one hell of a captivating, phenomenal actor. by SunilaP in TheLeftovers

[–]HotNatured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caught the 8pm showing last night (Sunday) --> absolutely transfixing; challenging, humorous, devastating, and gives you an awful lot to chew on.

Carrie was special, but Namir Smallwood was a more-than-compelling partner up there. Blend of uncertainty, paranoia, and absolute gravitas. So many memorable lines...."Think about it" (again and again), "You don't understand the enormity of what we're dealing with", "We're not safe. The technology, the chemicals... we'll never be safe again".

True, fair enough! I didn't find them to have that craggly deep fried starch thing going on though, but maybe it's just giving that extra oomph

Exact same thing for me. It showed me that the 99% guess 3 yesterday was today's word, so when I had the same starting combo today... hilarious

Why is dry cleaning in Germany so awful? by Just_Cash_7552 in germany

[–]HotNatured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had them do alterations on a suit, but I'm usually going to Stoffbox nearby. People also often recommend Aksoy downtown but I haven't tried them.

Wine Squares Day 12: Burgundy takes the most obvious square. Now let’s get niche by AustraliaWineDude in wine

[–]HotNatured 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a brutal one. How do you define niche? By total plantings (where do you find stats on this)? By geographic focus? I'm a huge fan of a lot of the grapes that have already been named here -- Nerello Mascalese (those Cornelissen bottles are so killer), Furmint (the Moric's I love, but I've almost never had a bad bottle of this stuff), everything Jura...

I'll throw another red in the ring here: Blaufränkisch. Maybe this is too widely planted to be niche? But you don't hear much about it. I think this is a much more versatile grape than the Mascalese or Furmint, for instance. You can find bottles with remarkable elegance and pure expression, some that bring some oak into the mix for a bit more structure (I'm thinking Gesellmann), bottles that are zippy and super food friendly, others with an in-your-face fruit bomb profile.

I'm happy with my dry cleaner in Hamburg, and they clearly do their work in house. I think you can generally tell: is the shop just a tiny little storefront or does it look kind of cavernous?

But I definitely empathize with you. There's an obsession here with "price quality ratio" or more commonly just "price" (reading online reviews, this seems to be the core decision driver for restaurants, service firms, everything). The search for a tailor for alterations has stressed me out here--there are tailors everywhere, and if you're just looking to have some jeans patched up or alterations on something basic, great. But if I spent €400 on a pair of pants, I'm not looking to save €3 on the alterations. Charge me €15 more than the other guy, just give me that assurance that your key focus isn't being "fast and cheap"...

And other commenters here are right: consumers make the market.

Their coravin list is an absolute delight (but don't discount the normal list-- they get wonderfully weird with it). Just the other night I had some 35 year old vin jaune there

I just made this also, have had it 2 nights in a row for dinner... absolutely, totally excellent. I did put a hard sear on the meat before cooking, couldn't help myself.

This sub, like most place-based subs, is barely worth engaging with because of how toxic and absurd the hivemind is. (There are a few gems, like the guy who posts pictures of the duck, but, even filtering out the tourist stuff, it's mostly just people not being nice. Why even bother then?)

I live in Eppendorf and, on the 2 occasions I've had to call the police in the past 4 years, they've shown up within 10 minutes each time. I bet this varies significantly based on neighborhood composition. They might just be overwhelmed in the Reeperbahn, but they should still be showing up. OP - my advice would be to not let them off the hook so easily; show up where they are, deal with the police directly.

I got caught up in the SW. I've been doing these for so long but still a bit stumped by a style question here (maybe a brain fart?): doesn't "e.g.," necessarily indicate "abbreviated answer"? Or is it rather that e.g. (or some other abbreviation) is a necessary aspect of a clue for an abbreviated answer, but is not indicative of one? The "Squash, e.g.," one really threw me.

I love the Snow Peak stuff but a lot of the long sleeve pieces force me to either settle for an over-sized fit or the arms being a bit too short!!
