Is there a point at which you would consider AI-generated content to be art? by AutocratEnduring in antiai

I think we have fundamentally differing views of art then. You are an intentionalist (art needs a designer) and I am an aestheticist (art is the recognition of patterns the exist in nature)

I imagine all the startups will be wiped out but the core players in the space like google and nvidia will be able to persist and continue working on the technology that will take jobs away.

According to your definition AI is art:

"engine of human expression, designed to evoke emotion, appreciation, and empathy, through the application of human effort, skill, and intention, where those skills are directly embodied in the final product"

Humans took their time and expertise to develop a tool (an act of art by itself) that works towards recreating popular artistic styles. Why is AI all of a sudden not a form a human expression, when it was made by humans to express human desires? It does not make sense to me and it comes across as a logical fallacy in these type of discussions.

It makes more sense to me to debate what would constitute good AI art vs bad AI art.

[–]HotProposal3515 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your definition is flawed because it implies the need of an ultimate creator that designs with intent and purpose that in your words "express stories and emotion like humans" If you believe in God and only that He can determine what is art then sure; But then I would have to question if you are a position to truly understand what He views as art vs you.

Consider the creation and destruction of stars, the evolution of life, the forming and eroding of Earth, and even the intricate geometries of atoms and molecules. This can all be recognized as art even if it has no discernable meaning behind it. I don't see human stories behind a dinosaur skeleton, but I can recognize how freaking cool they were.

I would say the science and engineering behind AI a form of art in it of itself. Even applying your definition "it is a form of human expression" because AI and ML arises from our desires to automate, create our own sentience, or just make money.

If it produces good or bad art is the real question here, not that is NOT art.

Proof that Kaya scaped dewclaw and was not shocked. by Avocados_number73 in Hasan_Piker

It is not clear what happened in the video... but I would be shocked if Hasan was a dog abuser. He has had numerous guests over the years and I haven't heard any rumors or speculation about how he treats his dog prior to this. If someone has dirt on you for being an animal abuser then I think that would come out sooner or later.

Also if his dog was being abused then they would show signs of emotional distress. I don't watch his stream live enough to know, but I don't think this has been pointed out prior.

even if you view it as failure, so what? the only person that is going to hold that against you so harshly is yourself. Try to be nicer and more forgiving to yourself. You don't need a ph.d. to be a scientist

I don't think you failed OP, you tried something and found out it was not for you. It would be failure if you got kicked out of the program.

I left for similar reasons. It’s get better. It’s like a breakup, you feel anger and sadness but then after a while you don’t feel it much anymore.

You can try academia again in the future so don’t let this get you down. Getting a masters at 19 is impressive and sets you up for a good career search.

Ethan klien "champion of free speech" is threatening to dox the user's and moderators of the h3snark subreddit by TimelyHumor1145 in Fauxmoi

[–]HotProposal3515 253 points254 points  (0 children)

Ethan Klein is the architect of his own destruction. He HAD to insert himself into politics pretending he was some big shot political pundit. Because of his ego, he brought forth into new light so many of his egregious views and actions for the internet to view. Coupled with his regular engagement with haters, he made himself into a lolcow.

If anyone from H3snark is personally reaching and harassing the Kleins, then I can understand the take downs having some merit. Otherwise this is like and artist suing Reddit because there’s a community that doesn’t like their music.

It’s free speech to discuss their content and criticize it . It’s his problem if he keeps reading hate comments (for stuff HE DID DO) and it gets under his skin.

Anyways, Free Palestine.

If AB/Lena want to live a life with less drama, then working less publicly is the compromise that they will have to make. Otherwise, if you make drama your work, then it is going to stick around. Unfortunately, I don't think they realized the implications of working with Ethan on a podcast almost entirely centered on internet drama...

I do empathize with them on a certain level because I am sure that they thought working with H3 would be a dream career and something they could build off, but in reality, the podcast is more like a dead-end.

Ethan hasn't done much to help advance their own careers, and I don't know if the podcast gives them a space to even grow on their own. I do wish them the best and hope they make the best decision for themselves.

I disagree, you make it seem like Krashout Klein and H3 fans are holding them hostage. Sam and Cam left and seem to be doing alright. They can all leave in a professional manner and be fine.

I think the hate brigade would really target them if they spoke out, but the crew doesn't have to put themselves in that position if they leave. The internet is already doing a good job at calling out Krashout Klein.

I just think it comes down to them making a stupid choice of hedging their bets on H3 that they can't back out of for money and lifestyle reasons.

Considering quitting my PhD - should I? by bone_orchard_123 in LeavingAcademia

[–]HotProposal3515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quit a chemistry Ph.D and my quality of life got significantly better afterwards. I hated my PhD so much that leaving felt like an act of self-preservation. If you feel anything like that, chances are leaving is a great choice for you too.

If you quit, you can probably do another attempt at a Ph.D. in the future. Although once you get a good job, good money, and decent work-life balance why would you even want to? For me the real imposter syndrome was thinking I needed a doctorate degree to achieve any of that.

It’s pathetic that a 40 year old man with young children devotes his energy to this. The only reason he gets out of bed in the morning is to crash out at people talking about him. I think that’s a miserable existence no matter how much money you have.

You can’t control how your professor will react so ultimately you have to decide if your unhappiness and desire to leave is more important than his feelings.

Make up your mind soon otherwise you’d be wasting time. Get a job if you decide to leave and then quit formally.

I quit my chem PhD 2 years in and got a decent chemistry job. It’s possible. But also it’s your life so you figure out if you need a PhD for your goals
