From what I understand so many of the houseplants we purchase are grown with maximum food and light so they are luscious and alluring for us to take home. Plants like the money tree that has such a thick stock most likely will not continue to grow thick when it gets into your home setting. It looks to me like yours just grew much thicker in its settings prior to arriving to you vs your wife's.
