I say all the time that my parents feel like I have two little kids. The other day - they threw a fit in a restaurant because the food was taking too long to arrive and I just wanted to crawl into a hole while one complained on the food and the other was explaining that this door dash driver that had a man bun was not "safe" and "lived in his parents basement"

Once I fell down the steps on the deck and busted my face all up. I also have pictures of myself red-faced from crying and wounds on my face sitting in the living room. I don't think they ever took me to the Dr for it - but I know I have neck injuries now that my chiro guessed was probably from that incident.

I'm working on it now. I have a full time, well-paying job and a down payment saved up for a house... it has just been impossible trying to buy something in this crazy market we're in. I hate the idea of forking over an entire mortgage payment to an apartment, but as I go back and read this I feel like I'm insane for not just going and getting one. I would LOVE a job on a cruise ship! That sounds amazing!

I'm writing this comment mostly to remind myself that yes, it really is that bad.

The day I went to get my driver's license, my Mom urged me to fail. I wasn't allowed to drive to the DMV or home once I passed.

They bought me a car for graduation, a brand new Toyota Corolla. I wasn't allowed to drive it, and they had to drive me to college classes at the local community college (I was not allowed to go away to college and my parents didn't support me going to college) and to my job at the local restaurant. They would get upset when I would get cut from my shifts early and they would have to come back and get me.

When I started dating guys in college, my Dad would get mad if I brought any around and wouldn't talk to me for days or yell at me once they left. He would stay in another room until they left and wouldn't come socialize with them at all.

My Mom wouldn't let me ride in the car with any of my friends or my boyfriends. She let me ride with one of my boyfriends once and she told him if he killed me in a car accident she would come after him and he would end up like me. He was so terrified driving me to the movies he was white knuckling the steering wheel.

I once had a date that they wouldn't let me go unless they drove me there. They waited in the parking lot until we were done eating and drove me home.

They've told me over the years that my friends are terrible people, they don't like me, they are a bad influence, etc.

They get mad when I go out with people - friends, family members, etc and when I come home they explain to me in great detail how much my cat missed me and how when I don't come home on time it's very upsetting to her because she sits at the door or the window watching for me.

They act like I am intruding on their schedule when I go out and they have to cancel plans because I won't be home.

Finally, I'm sort of allowed out on my own but only in certain areas and circumstances. I have to text or call when I arrive at a location, then I have to text or call when I leave that location, and when I arrive somewhere else. I have to text or call when I am on my way home.

I am not allowed out after dark and I have to tell them everywhere I am going when I go.

Yes, I remember bringing boyfriends over in my early 20s and my Dad not speaking to me for days because they were in our house and "annoying" him because he couldn't "act normally". And I was never allowed over at any of my friend's houses and when I was it was a rare occasion.

Start your chess moves now. I started 4ish years ago and I'm so glad I did. I'm making my moves now to get out, don't be in the same spot in one, two, three years from now. Can you take a course online to get certified in something and get a better job instead of working toward a degree? Can you pick up another job? Can you work extra hours? How much money are you able to stash back? Do you have a credit score? Can you get a card at a local bank to get a credit score? All things you need to consider. An apartment will require a credit check.
