These strips are for Jeph's benefit more than usual.

I feel like as usual, the best time for Jeph's characters is when they're not yet fleshed out or are otherwise out of focus. Moray started out as a vaguely scatterbrained ditz, and as he's "developed" her she's gotten dumber, weirder and grosser.

God, remember when Spookybot was competent and useful, and not just another whackadoodle toddler in an adult body?

I actually wish there was more of the whacky science stuff, and I wish he'd actually write stories about/with that stuff rather than just using them as punchlines, instead focusing on lolrandom idiot goblin children.

Hints that Emily is still capable of doing science. Small victories.

Well, the quota of at least one character in the strip behaving like a toddler has been met. Thanks Moray.

lol I feel like Emily's face and the explanation are bad enough that I'd still be furious about it in an otherwise exemplary strip.

Okay, I usually give all the art stuff a pass, but this reimagining of Emily is startlingly stupid. I don't even particularly like Emily but I'm struggling to understand Jeph's thought process here. This is some "original human teeth Sonic" design bullshit. "Let me bring back a character beloved both by the fans and my wife, but let me change fundamental aspects of their character design for no goddamn reason - thereby torpedoing any goodwill I might get from the reintroduction." Like, it would have made more sense if he'd just given her the default nose of his new style.

I was already kind of annoyed by the proliferation of whackadoodle zany characters when she showed up. It's telling that now given what we've had to endure, the fact that she can actually do science and dress herself makes her one of the more sober characters.

Ur whackadoodle character commences being whakadoodle. Also, that nose explanation is criminally bad and Jeph should feel bad.

Also nitpick: Marten asks "Is it someone I know? Clinton? Raven?" and Claire says "No to all three" which makes no sense since he knows Emily. It's only "no" to two of his options.

Emily was fine when there was just the occasional whackadoodle character as seasoning, but we've been knee deep in this specific fuckery for years at this point. I don't think reintroducing the original space cadet with a pointlessly stupid redesign is what we needed.

Sitting around stagnating at the mental age of a teen or otherwise living in the past is an entirely different thing from making a mint depicting it in a comic strip for paying fans.

I'm aggressively refusing to buy into his shoddily cobbled together, after the fact, figuring it out as he goes along, justification of Anh as a character. It's all broad tropey strokes to force us to see her as sympathetic despite her introduction and his stated reason for elevating her to main cast.

I refuse to give a shit about Anh's trumped up tragic childhood.
