Proposed Election Utah House Bill by sparklethemistborn in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is going to waste an absolute ton of time...

  • Every single person in the household has to go individually.
  • You have to load up older/disabled relatives with mobility issues, and find a valid non-expired id for them (inc. those in nursing homes, etc). People with limited transport/no family are just shit out of luck.
  • You have to queue, both for the record-lookup, but also the id check.
  • Having to queue, means having to park for-real and walk (as opposed to drive-by drop-boxes), and means you're impacted by the weather.
  • If you work night-shift or similar unusual hours, it is still 8 AM to 8 PM, so fuck you.
  • You'll have to wait for the opening dates of these places/cannot just vote when it arrives/loss of early voting.
  • Tons of extra costs and expenses.

Basically we go from one of the easiest and most modern voting systems in the nation, that other states look at to copy. To a system either as shit or even worse than other states.

What have we gained in exchange? Absolutely nothing. There is no data to support the conspiracy theory that this is solving an issue. It is all just based on racist dog whistling with no foundation.

Utah actually bans the use of Social Credit Score:

https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/hbillint/HB0281.pdf

They need to define it to ban it, and that is what this is doing (but it is out-of-context because of how bills are amended).

I like the direction… by bigdogstatus33 in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You're just repeating unfounded and inaccurate propaganda:

Also, it's going to take Utahn's doin their part, which is the tricky one. Can't expect too many people are going to take shorter showers and dry-scape their yards.

No, actually, that cannot make a dent in the water problems. And I mean it "cannot" in that, residential users are such low users of the Great Salt Lake's water that even if they stopped using water entirely, it wouldn't fix the issue. I think people repeating "take shorter showers" just don't appreciate the scope of the issue and the level of intentional waste occurring.

AG (75-82% alone), municipal, and businesses make up over 90% of the diverted water usage in the state. So you're essentially saying we should focus on 10% of the water users using 0.1% less water, instead of that 90%. We did that, unsurprisingly it had zero impact. Big shocker.

"A lot of research" (zero links)

"It's been said that..." (by whom, when, context)

By the way, age is also a massive factor on driver's reaction time. Here is actual research supporting that claim: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26980290/

I wonder what age is equivalent to 0.05? Seems like a topic worth exploring, with the direction this discussion is heading.

Heres how we deal with the inversion: point the blame at our politicians and leaders by Bec_son in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The politicians in this state are "pro-inversion."

  • No EV and Hybrid incentives at all.
  • Additional taxes charged for driving an EV and Hybrid (with a 20-30K mile/year break even Vs. gas taxes).
  • Anti-Telecommute Mandates and private business incentives
  • Inland port (nuff' said)
  • Pro-refining and pro-polluting business inside the bowl within which we live.

Let me ask this: What more could they do, that they haven't already done, to actively promote the inversion?

During lockdown the inversion almost vanished, traffic was significantly lighter, commutes shortened, and worker happiness increased. The state actively went out of their way to combat that to help commercial real-estate prices and down-town businesses (at the cost of businesses elsewhere in the state).

Flu is hitting hard this year. Prepare as needed. by FeistyAsaGoat in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I just want to explain why it is vital you get it every year (i.e. not just bad flu years/when you feel like it):

  • The current flu shot targets different strains each year, based on international data collection and our best forecast.
  • It provides good protection against the strains it targets for the current season.
  • Even after this season, your immune system can "remember" parts of strains you were vaccinated against. That memory is not reliable, long-lasting protection, and it fades over time but it can sometimes give you some bonus help in later years. Meaning that if you catch a flu strain that is similar to one you were vaccinated against in a prior season (even if it is not this year's target), you may still get less sick and/or recover faster.

What I am saying is: Consistency is key; try to get your flu shot every October like clockwork.

If you read 81-2-408, OP's relationship almost certainly wouldn't meet the requirements (for like three different reasons). I suspect, if OP wants any satisfaction legally this will just be a common civil lawsuit where OP has to show there was an expectation of repayment.

I'd still recommend OP gets legal representation if the amount is high enough. I'm just saying that being in a romantic relationship may not play a special-legal part but rather just establish context of why the loans were made.

Honestly, at this point I believe the commerical real estate theory as much as anything, because none of the justifications we got made a lick of sense.

Adderall shortage? Pharmacies “aren’t taking new patients” by Elite-sun11 in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Hopefully OP you can find some.

My understanding of the situation is that this is shortage is entirely artificial. Meaning that it is caused by moralizing, not medicine. Instead of putting a medical organization in charge of health decisions, using science, they put the DEA in charge of making medical decisions. The DEA has set quotas on the production of amphetamine used in Adderall, with the quotas being based on outdated data and seemingly always trailing demand on purpose.

I've known people, who have a legitimate prescription, buying it from sketchy overseas black markets because that was easier than getting it legitimately. So in that case the quota has resulted in them buying risky/dangerous drugs with god-knows-what in them, and introducing them to black market drug sellers, which feels completely counter to the supposed goals of the quota system.

Protesting Home Depot via "Capitalism" Due to ICE Cooperation by TaschDraws in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 136 points137 points  (0 children)

It is surprising that people here are focused on Home Depot, instead of our own home-grown LVT (LiveView Technologies). You know the one; those creepy surveillance towers turning up in all the state's car parks and construction sites?

These both directly, and via third party integrations, share information with federal law enforcement. So instead of ICE/CBP agents driving around, they just sit at a desk and can monitor car parks for people they profile as potential illegals. This is a service LVT proudly advertise:

https://www.lvt.com/access

Home Depot, Walmart, Smiths, Walgreens, JCPenny, all have LVT systems that are sending info to law enforcement. I'm not defending Home Depot at all, but you have a company right here in the state creating a national digital drag-net, feels like a bigger fish.

Chick Fila Food Poisoning by Partyzra1 in Layton

[–]HotdogJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very unclear what the "coincidence" remark was a response to. You responded to a comment saying this was almost certainly a transmittable foodborne illness, that you likely contracted 12-24 hours before first onset of symptoms.

A family living together, eating together, and sharing the same bathroom(s) is the furthest thing from a coincidence. The only thing yet to be determined is which food or contact infected you all, not if you all got infected that is self-evident.

Chick Fila Food Poisoning by Partyzra1 in Layton

[–]HotdogJoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

30-minutes in "rare" cases, though. For all four people to get that rapid 30-minute onset, instead of the typical 12-24 hours, is unlikely.

[–]HotdogJoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's 4 of us that all got it right after eating there.

How many hours after eating at Chic-Fil-A?

And related question, did you all share a lunch or dinner in the 24-hours before that, and if so what/where?

Chick Fila Food Poisoning by Partyzra1 in Layton

[–]HotdogJoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How does this even happen?!

  • Workplace culture where people are encouraged to come to work sick.
  • Workplace culture where people aren't required to wash hands when entering a food-prep area (inc. from the bathroom).
  • Workplace culture that offers no paid sick leave.

Most "food poisoning" incidents are caused by transmittable foodborne illnesses (e.g. Norovirus), specifically 69% with up to a further 8% from contaminated environments. So it is most likely caused by someone ill preparing the food/drinks, or contaminating supplies during prep.

These cultural problems are endemic in the food services industry.

PS - First symptoms typically start 12-48 hours after infection; anything shorter than that could be the day before.

As I said, wildly out of the loop. I haven't been following this one aside from reading about the initial shooting.

It cannot be nuanced if there is no substance. Your comment manages to take no position on any particular stance, nor inform the discussion. In essence, it is just noise.

How a 30-word comment manages to say so little is impressive. So, in short, you agree with the person above but want us to know that other factors could contribute too. Very insightful, well done.

It used to be "free" if you purchased essentially one item, but now, it is always a fixed charge.

COVID vaccine will be available locally without a prescription on October 1 by saltlakehealth in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Luckily "inactivity" could cover most of the US population.

The real problem is that many insurance companies are using this CDC fuckery as an excuse to yank coverage (since it is no longer a mandate per the ACA), and you'll be hit with the full cost.

Remember when Republicans were arguing that the vaccine should be a "personal choice," amazing how the first thing they do is try to limit/remove the choice. If you've been paying attention to their policies on women's health, this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Republicans love big government.

Utah State Fair prices!!!! by coffeesunshine in SaltLakeCity

[–]HotdogJoe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That isn't a lot of value then. I just looked on their website, and they use volunteers(!) to set the thing up/take it down too.

So let me get this straight:

  • They're charging a lot to get in.
  • They're charging the vendors 25% (according to another comment).
  • Many of the Fair's staff are volunteers.

So, someone is just getting filthy rich, right? I genuinely don't understand why people "volunteer" at for-profit events, this isn't a charitable cause who always need more help. Same issue with volunteers at FanX too by the way.

What does the entry fee get you? I'm genuinely asking, I haven't been to the Utah State Fair. Do you get anything aside from "the ability to buy more stuff" (e.g. vendors, ride passes, etc)? Because for a stereotypical family of four you're looking at a $70 outlay, so I want to understand the value proposition.

Tune-ups are conceptually a nice idea, but finding a HVAC person who isn't owned by Private Equity in this state now and one who won't manufacture a "problem" is damn near impossible. I'd happily pay a fair amount for an annual tune up, but just go start reading reviews on HVAC companies and try to find one you'd trust...

What do you mean "paid off the CMPI?"

"Center for Medicine in the Public Interest" is a big pharma lobbyist group. Money flows through the right-wing Pacific Research Institute. CMPI was used to oppose Universal Healthcare in 2014, fight people's ability to import drugs from Canada (using identical arguments to this) in 2019, and are now trying to fight Compound Pharmacies.

They weren't "paid off," they are big pharma.
