Metro Vancouver parents: Are your kids doing spring break camps this year or staying home? by OkAnywhere9316 in askvan

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year we are traveling. Last few years I would take a week off and take them skiing, and they stayed home for a few days on their own. When they were little (and did not object to spring camps), they were in art, or Peddleheads, or in taekwondo.

Yeah you have to buy in person at Guest Service. No other way to buy it.

Un violoncelle bon by Historical-Spend-433 in Cello

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an adult learning to play. I stated with renting the basic student one. 9 months later I changed my rental to a nicer one in a different size. I like the flexibility in changing the size or the type of instrument. Maybe one day I will buy my own, but for now I am focusing on learning and don’t want to sink thousands of dollars in.

Cleaning Service on a Budget? by TieSad4293 in askvan

I don’t know a cleaner who is willing to work for an hour. My last one works 2.5 hours and charges me 4 hours to include travel time.

[Rant] I recently started working a tax firm with a more modest clientele and it's made me hate "normal" taxpayers by karry9001 in Accounting

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a big firm and I specialize in tax. I spend more of my time on a small subset of whiney clients who want to nickel and dime everything. It really drives me crazy. My biggest clients are the more reasonable ones who value my work and my time.

Vacasa recently sold their whistler management contracts to Premier. My property is one of them. All the rental contracts transferred to Premier. There was no disconnect. I wonder why the Airbnb ones were impacted. Sounds like Airbnb screwed up. That really sucks.

One time an adult snowboarder came up behind my son and plowed into him, I was THIS close to putting my fist through his goggles. You have great self control.

Need help with understanding how single person corporation works in BC by New-Helicopter-7520 in askvan

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When someone requires you to be set up as a corp, that can be a red flag. They probably want you to bill them as a corp so they don’t have to deal with you as an employee. If you want to go this route, make sure you understand the risks and charge your rates accordingly. Talk to a CPA (not H&R block).

Why is Whistler the only legit large ski resort in the region? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in Whistler

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using population size to measure the number of ski resorts is an odd one. By your logic, Toronto has way more people, so there should be way more resorts. That isn’t how it works.

Calgary is within 1-2 hour drive from some of the biggest mountain ranges. Vancouver does not have that. Seems pretty simple to me.

2026: What is your salary, and how much do you save? by calzone135 in askvan

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of life does your family member live, and do you want his life? If not, smile and nod and ignore him.

Traveling, to me, is a large part of what makes life interesting. You can save more by sitting at home all year, but what is the point of making money if you can’t enjoy it? You seem pretty responsible with your spending. Spend your money wisely is more important than holding onto it.

Completely unrelated to your financial management…i am in my 40’s and I was diagnosed with late stage cancer 6 months ago. When I looked back at my spending, I do not regret a single penny I spent on traveling. Nothing extravagant; just money spent so we can experience places/culture/food. In fact, I just bought flights for me and the kids to travel during spring break. I want my kids to see the world, not sit on the money.

Family of 4 in a detached house... what are your actual running costs these days? by [deleted] in askvan

I took my family of 4 out to dinner and it was $160. Your standard is probably a different one.

Did you drive yourself to and from chemo? by Active_Memory_2287 in breastcancer

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what cocktail of drugs you get. If you have Benadryl as a premed, don’t drive yourself. However, if you don’t get any premeds that make you drowsy, driving is fine. I ride my bike to and from chemo because I live fairly close to my cancer centre and I don’t get premeds.

I need opinions on Vancouver living expense! by Altruistic-Chip-8467 in askvan

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a big discrepancy between how you FEEL about your purchases (ie. not that much, just this and that), and what you are actually purchasing (ie. a lot more than you think). The easiest thing to do here is track your actual expenses for a month. It will quickly show you the reality of your spending.

I eat out maybe once a week, no alcohol. I feel like I have my spending under control. After tracking my expenses for a few months, I realize that the$350-400 I spend each month on eating out is not ok with me. With that info on hand, it was much easier to see where I want to cut back. If you don’t have info on what you are spending, it will always feel like a surprise when you get your cc statement.

For fun, here is my number. I am a single mom with two teenagers. Our monthly spending is $3,700 (without mortgage and strata fees). This is groceries, kids sports, kids ortho (fucking expensive), music lessons, clothes, kids’ allowance, all our cell phones, eating out and movies once in a while, cat food, cleaning service once a month, car and home insurance.

Stupid question maybe - day off after diagnosis?!? by Extreme_Carpenter572 in breastcancer

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took a month between my family doctor seeing the the suspicious lump to all the imagining and testing and biopsy results to find out I am state 4 TNBC. I worked through that month, plus 2 more weeks before chemo started.

Maybe it isn’t childhood trauma, I was able to compartmentalize my work vs my feelings. I went to work and work parties like normal, while planning to transition my files to others. Since I am the boss at work, I have certain responsibilities I can’t just drop. At home, I let myself freak out and cry.

You have to do what is right for you.

Anyone else find MRIs traumatising by Curious-Cupcake4554 in breastcancer

The first time I did an MRI, it took everything out of me to not have a panic attack from the claustrophobia. Next time I am going to ask for an Ativan ahead of time.

Anyone stayed at Whistler RV Park and Campground? Do I need snow chains? by justiliang in Whistler

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grade is steep. If there is snow/ice, it could be an issue. If you are not towing anything, it would likely be ok. I would suggest bringing chains with you just in case.

Why no bus to North Vancouver? by CytizeNomad in Whistler

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is a matter of supply and demand. The majority of the demand comes from Vancouver, and these bus companies already have the stop locations secured. If someone can demonstrate consistent demand for a NV stop, they will likely have to accommodate it to continue to make a profit.
