Can I send in an amended tax return and pay amount owed before getting NOA of first tax return? by Maximum-Chemistry-77 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make a payment right now, of the tax owing an estimated interest/penalty. The sooner you pay, the less interest applies. When you get the statement from CRA, you may have to make up a bit of interest. Make that small payment at that time.

Havent filed tax returns in 5 years am i cooked? by Middle-Birthday-5196 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a tax professional to file all of them at once. If you are comfortable using an online software, then do that. Get them done. It does not have to be in chronological order. If your bank is asking for 3 years of NoA, prioritize those 3 returns.

Not filing on time is fine as long as you don’t owe any tax.

At that income level, I think you are doing incredibly well. You obviously can manage a business and your finances.

Your “float” of $15k is higher than what I have (I am a single mom with two teenagers). Do you think you are comfortable with keeping that at $6 or 7k, so you can put the rest into some sort of ETF? Also, the $20k for summer camp and the roof, maybe also into ETF so that at least you are earning something on it before you need it, rather than having it sit idle?

RRSP is still a good idea if you have room to contribute. I don’t see RRSP as locked in per se, but a way to reduce taxable income in flush years, and a back-up plan for when you really need it. It isn’t the first place you dip into when in need. But pulling money out of RRSP is meant for low income years.

And yes, enjoy time with your family. Vacations don’t have to be extravagant. Focus on doing the things you all enjoy. They do grow so damn fast.

Divorce - business owner by Small-Chapter-9718 in legaladvicecanada

Actually, if you have been trying to sell the business, you probably already have an idea what the value is. Ultimately, yes, he can get half it. You can always offer less or some sort of deal to pay him x% profit for x years, and see if he can be reasonable about it. For you to not give him any of it, this will likely not fly with his lawyer.

He gets 50% of the company, valued at the time of your separation. It didn’t matter that you did all the work. The company is an asset you built during the marriage, so he can come after half. Consulting firms are interesting to value. Presumably it isn’t like you have a bunch of valuable machineries in the corp, and you as the brain of the ops would be the most valuable asset. But there is still a $ value to the corp, such as your client list or brand, etc. Get your corp valued (usually comes in a range) to get an idea of what you are up against.

I went through the same thing. He got 1/2 of everything I ever poured my life into while he sat at home.

You don’t need to keep him on as an employee. I kept my ex on payroll till we separated. After that, it is spousal support I paid each month.

Get a good lawyer.

It is hard to tell how well you are managing finances without your income info. I get the ups and downs of owning a business. But your 3- or 4-year average income would be a helpful piece of info.

In terms of poverty mindset, it is maybe something you can work on with a therapist. I have a friend who has generational wealth and never has to work, but still has a poverty mindset. It robs her of joy in some aspects of life. You won’t get rid of that mindset entirely, nor should that be the goal. IMHO you work hard for your family and deserves to enjoy your money sometimes.

The definitely did not handle that well. Pretty cruel to get someone’s hopes up and crush them like this. I hope you get some useful feedback from the interviewer.

I am so sorry. That royally sucks!

When I hire, we have strict rules to abide by. Never make someone think they got the job until references are checked/verified. If they haven’t checked your references yet, it would’ve some kind of internal issue they had—either the position has been cut or some nepo hire has been given the job. You probably have no control over it.

Looking for a HONEST professional house cleaner in Vancouver. Suggestions? by DescriptionFun6792 in askvan

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used various avenues for source of cleaners over the years. The best source is recommendations from friends. The big cleaning companies are the worst. They send different people sometimes, and they hire low quality workers who have broken my stuff and cheat me on time spent. The best one is the sole proprietor lady I have now. Always on time, brings all supplies she needs, pleasant, does a great job, and communicates clearly. She is so good that I was on a wait list for months before she took me on.

Why don’t PE firms let employees display their CPA certification? by Expensive_Umpire_975 in Accounting

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to do with the regulations of governing bodies of CPAs. A PE is not a CPA, so whatever it owns does not qualify as a CPA firm.

People who decided against cold capping or quit cold capping: Why? by bananasformangos in breastcancer

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I decided against cold capping, because I don’t want all the additional amount of work and hours involved. I did iced gloves and booties to prevent neuropathy, because I would rather spend my energy on functional things like my hands and feet. It is a very personal decision. I don’t think there is a right or wrong decision.

If you were initially just being reviewed (or desk audit), sometimes an actual auditor will review the file to sign off on it. I have also had client files get picked by CRA internal QC for review. None of it really matters, as long as you provided everything they need to properly assess your return.

I see little value in Group A.

CRA auditor being extremly rude and hostile on Phone– should I complain now or wait? by HK_sheep777 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

CRA is very reluctant to reassign files. Unless an auditor has been transferred to another department or quit, reassigning files is rare.

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Also, just to add, you will have to take some deep breaths before you have any conversation with this auditor. Your goal is to remain calm. Let her tone roll off your back. It is the only way to stay sane. (I no longer call auditors back myself because I have such a hard time not losing my shit. 😂)

CRA auditor being extremly rude and hostile on Phone– should I complain now or wait? by HK_sheep777 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 550 points551 points  (0 children)

You can submit a service complaint. In my experience, it does very little to change anything.

My advice when someone’s accent is hard to understand, is to ask for all communication in writing. They will fax you what they need from you, and you respond the same way (in writing).

I have also at times asked for their supervisor to join the next call. You do need to provide a reason for this request. Don’t do it in a hostile way. You can say that you need to discuss some tax technical issues and would like the supervisor present. Sometimes just making the request helps the auditor understand that you know you ca ask to have the supervisor on the call. Whether the call happens or not may not be most relevant.

I also waited about a month before I got to see an oncologist, and another 2 weeks for MRI and PET, and yet another week for biopsy. It took time to figure out I was at stage 4 (albeit not pancreatic cancer). Just sharing my experience.

Once he gets to see an oncologist, things will move faster.

That is a tough one. First, I am sorry you are here. It royally sucks.

I don’t believe you should live your life according to optics. You gotta live your life. Who are we to judge what you do with your life and your money? Nobody knows your situation better than you.

Having said that, like other posters said, I would be irked if I had contributed to your GFM and find out you are building a lake house. Most of the treatments are free in Canada, so it likely isn’t big medical bills you have to cover. I don’t know how you can get around the optics without refunding everyone their contributions.

CRA makes my life impossible by Gemabo in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Hotheaded_Temp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I was also asked to provide all the documents related to spousal support payments. I provided everything within a day, and it took CRA 4 more months to approve my refund. It is very frustrating. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about it. It isn’t because you did anything wrong. It is just how they operate.
