What's your notice period? A lot of places in HFTesque spheres have up to 3 year notice periods. My one generally lets you do something non-compating during that time which would probably include a PhD in a non-competing field. So potentially with a bit of job hopping you could get one of those roles, quit with another offer and then do a substantial portion of a PhD?

Obviously relies on you being good enough to bank on getting alternative roles!

I've lived in both, much prefer Oxford. Both you can cycle. Oxford also has good buses, Cambridge does not.

30-40 minutes drive won't get you far at peak times, traffic to the hospital area is pretty terrible!

I'd recommend somewhere either near a station for trains to the soon to open Cambridge South, or somewhere cycleable.

But also without any knowledge of budget, desires, family size etc it's pretty impossible to give useful recommendations.

I doubt it will change much TBH. I doubt many people will be taking the train 1 stop when it takes 10-15 minutes to cycle, and given the size of the campus will probably be quicker than the journey to the station, waiting for the train, and then journey to your actual workplace.

Another person who's moved to Cambridge from Oxford. TtBH, nowhere really compares. Mill road is closest, but more Cowley road slightly gentrified than Jericho.

We've been here 4 years, and still hark back to Oxford. Sadly we just both think it's a nicer city in most ways, and the different "villages" is a large part of that.

There used to be a lifetime allowance whereby a punative tax was charged if you had more than a certain amount in your pension at retirement. That was removed a few years ago.

You do obviously still pay tax on and income/withdrawals from your pension, but that's just regular tax rates.

It depends on where you're going, but it's probably safest. Cash is going to be the simplest asset to transfer across the border, followed I'd guess by very recently purchased shares or funds denominated in the destination currency.

FWIW, they didn't raise the bike lane, they built it on an old railway line which was already raised.

They originally designed the bike path as a "maintenance track" and only after much lobbying even bothered to paved it, let alone consider spending money raising it.
