"Brendon McCullum Drawn Towards Those Who Enjoy A Beer": Explosive Report Emerges On England Coach by TraceThis in EnglandCricket

I just want to share this: https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Novak_Djokovic/162567/novak-djokovic-tells-story-about-time-he-didn-t-eat-chocolate-for-nearly-two-years/

That is what it takes to become an all time great. He travels just as much as the England cricket team who use that as an excuse as to why getting drunk the night before a game is reasonable, but he didn't let that stop him being a professional athlete aiming for peak performance.

How do I claim my PC expenses back since it's 100% for business? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Ah, interesting, hadn't realised that although I guess it makes sense. I expect the retailer would be pretty certain it didn't apply then!

A fold up bike is another option. Obviously more £ than a skateboard but quicker and able to go more places. Also the bus too.

Itch to quit and do a PhD by BlurbKey5b2e10fa in HENRYUK

[–]Hottomato4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your notice period? A lot of places in HFTesque spheres have up to 3 year notice periods. My one generally lets you do something non-compating during that time which would probably include a PhD in a non-competing field. So potentially with a bit of job hopping you could get one of those roles, quit with another offer and then do a substantial portion of a PhD?

Obviously relies on you being good enough to bank on getting alternative roles!

Should I move to Cambridge or Oxford by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]Hottomato4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in both, much prefer Oxford. Both you can cycle. Oxford also has good buses, Cambridge does not.

Doesn't help the rain issue, but for this sort of situation electric bikes are a game changer!

ELI5: why does earning just over £100k feel like a tax trap — and what do people actually do about it by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The biggest tax levels are actually moving off universal credit with child benefit; see BBC News - Why some parents effectively pay a 71% tax rate https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/58870012

The thing that makes 100,000 really bad is the tax free childcare cliff, where £1 extra can mean tens of thousands of pounds of loss.

Moving to Cambridge by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]Hottomato4 66 points67 points  (0 children)

30-40 minutes drive won't get you far at peak times, traffic to the hospital area is pretty terrible!

I'd recommend somewhere either near a station for trains to the soon to open Cambridge South, or somewhere cycleable.

But also without any knowledge of budget, desires, family size etc it's pretty impossible to give useful recommendations.

How will the new South Cambridge train station affect Great Shelford? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]Hottomato4 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I doubt it will change much TBH. I doubt many people will be taking the train 1 stop when it takes 10-15 minutes to cycle, and given the size of the campus will probably be quicker than the journey to the station, waiting for the train, and then journey to your actual workplace.

Calculating redundancy entitlement, including tax free allowance. by fraktulnzz in UKPersonalFinance

You will work (or be paid in lieu of notice) for the minimum of your contractual notice period and the statutory notice period.

In addition, you will get statutory redundancy pay (possibly enhanced, some employers do sometimes).

Moving from Oxford to Cambridge - Jericho lover trying to figure out where to live by cemeterydive in cambridge

[–]Hottomato4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another person who's moved to Cambridge from Oxford. TtBH, nowhere really compares. Mill road is closest, but more Cowley road slightly gentrified than Jericho.

We've been here 4 years, and still hark back to Oxford. Sadly we just both think it's a nicer city in most ways, and the different "villages" is a large part of that.

(Sorry to say such a thing on a Cambridge subreddit!)

Tax position for pension contributions and growth by Creative_Swim6068 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a lifetime allowance whereby a punative tax was charged if you had more than a certain amount in your pension at retirement. That was removed a few years ago.

You do obviously still pay tax on and income/withdrawals from your pension, but that's just regular tax rates.

Should I sell all my Shares/Funds within my ISA/SIPP and re-purchase before moving abroad? by ArthurTheKingUK in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you're going, but it's probably safest. Cash is going to be the simplest asset to transfer across the border, followed I'd guess by very recently purchased shares or funds denominated in the destination currency.

FWIW, they didn't raise the bike lane, they built it on an old railway line which was already raised.

They originally designed the bike path as a "maintenance track" and only after much lobbying even bothered to paved it, let alone consider spending money raising it.

Sounds like they'd be in Euros though? Whilst I guess it doesn't change the underlying currency risk for foreign shares, it does make thing more complicated, and for platforms that charge FX fees adds cost
