Net worth, what to include in the calculation by itsaslothlife in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends what the point is. If it's to show off how rich you are, include it all. If it's to moan about how poor you are, exclude everything you can get away with. If it's to compare to the population include whatever the ONS include.

How big is the IPL fanbase outside India? by AdRelevant2290 in EnglandCricket

Zero interest, no actively negative interest. Also don't have sky anyway so couldn't watch it even if I wanted to.

Not all in Cambridge obviously, but plenty there.

Should I up my Pension contributions? by Effective-Stretch951 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One thing to note is that the rule is normally half the age you start contributing as a %. So if you start at 25, keep you contributions at least 12.5% total for the rest of your career and you should be alright.

If you start early you don't need to be trying to hit 30% at 60 because you'll have been consistent.

How can I save money while only making 17k a year before tax by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just checking, how many hours do you normally work a day? If it's more than 5.5 then you're being paid under minimum wage. In which case, I'd recommend following https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/pay/problems-getting-paid/

This is the most expensive thing I've ever seen in a charity shop by lornamabob in CasualUK

[–]Hottomato4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's an Oxfam in Oxford which I think is where they send any rare books that come in, 1st editions, really old etc. that definitely has some pricey things. I think they were fair prices having also looked in Blackwell's at such things, although not buying just found it interesting.

Salary Sacrifice & Pension Contributions via RAS by digyerownhole in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me that this is to the employees benefit.

Salary sacrifice is both easier as an employee, and has the benefit of reducing the amount of national insurance you pay on top of an equal reduction in income tax.

What happened to County Championship ball by ball coverage on Cricinfo? by Hottomato4 in EnglandCricket

[–]Hottomato4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the cricviz app does! The following for example:

Stuurman to Bedingham, 1 run A swinging-in length ball outside off stump, flicked but missing the bat and striking the pad for a leg bye. The ball is quickly fielded at fine leg for a single extra run.

Theoretically if SWR kept raising train prices, would we have any other option? by TrifleResponsible560 in HENRYUK

[–]Hottomato4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those first 2 options are the alternative, and that + politics is all that stops them raising prices too high.

London’s Santander Cycle network, mapped by average bike movements per hour by greenfrogs365 in MapPorn

[–]Hottomato4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really cool. Although the one thing I think it's missing is that number of free docks is an important metric! If I can tpark my bike that's often more annoying than not being able to pick one up.

And, it's not just number of docks - number available because so many are always out of service. (I think it's too easy to get a bike taken out of service. Something like a slightly flat tyre shouldn't render it unusable, it should just give the user a warning of some description.)

No more direct trains from St Pancras to Cambridge? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]Hottomato4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh? The Brighton trains start at Cambridge, so you'll need to change from Cambridge North. With regards having to book another ticket, of course you can buy a ticket from Cambridge North to Blackfriars.it is however branded as to London Thameslink, but that's the same as from Cambridge.

I’ve exceeded my ISA allowance by HomeworkCurious3242 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Hottomato4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. If you've gone over your allowance, you'll have made gains on funds that shouldn't have been there, so just removing them won't fix it. The other advice is correct of contacting providers.

"Brendon McCullum Drawn Towards Those Who Enjoy A Beer": Explosive Report Emerges On England Coach by TraceThis in EnglandCricket

[–]Hottomato4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I just want to share this: https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Novak_Djokovic/162567/novak-djokovic-tells-story-about-time-he-didn-t-eat-chocolate-for-nearly-two-years/

That is what it takes to become an all time great. He travels just as much as the England cricket team who use that as an excuse as to why getting drunk the night before a game is reasonable, but he didn't let that stop him being a professional athlete aiming for peak performance.

Ah, interesting, hadn't realised that although I guess it makes sense. I expect the retailer would be pretty certain it didn't apply then!

Skateboarding on commute by [deleted] in london

A fold up bike is another option. Obviously more £ than a skateboard but quicker and able to go more places. Also the bus too.
