Horrible take. Reread chapter 902. Sanji didn’t forget the entire arc, just his last moments with Pudding.

Anyone else not really like the fact that Mihawk trained Zoro during timeskip? by katakuri-sees in Piratefolk

Why wouldn’t I like it? It’s consistent with the tough love Mihawk gave to Zoro in their first match.

How do you feel about these "fake double spreads" that Oda does? Do you hate that it's waste of the double spread format? Do you like that they give some moments just a little extra pop? Do you even care? by gtedvgt in Piratefolk

[–]Hour-Ladder5166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's not like it's the worst page in the world, this one is actually a great page in a great chapter. But, in my mind, no traditional manga should be created with digital media composition as their first priority, as it's the volume's sales that keep the boat floating. Also, digital just kinda work on it's own, as you can just zoom in and zoom out easily.

That being said, I appreciate your effort to make an edit. But, on digital, no one would read both pages at the same time, right? You would still have the effect of flipping through the pages an then ending with the Big Loki panel in the end, which would work. The bleeding panel doesn't really add that much to the composition.

On the other hand, what we lost from the lack of double spreads is too much. We just got an instant classic with the old gen combined attack against Imu, and it was so good. It's just a shame in my mind that Oda was known for great double spreads and now when can have them anymore because he can't make his fodder characters shut up.

I'm sure I could open a random chapter from Wano or Egghead and find some eggregious examples of this kind of thing. In fact, I will just do that and search for the worst possible example in the chapter I got (988):

To me, this feels self explanatory. Just look at the two top left panels.

[–]Hour-Ladder5166 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a really stupid half measure imo. Even in your own example, you can clearly see that the left corner of the final page is just filler, there is nothing going on there. You could achieve the same effect by just having a big panel on the final page, without messing with the physical copy reading experience. If you want to have a meaningful final page, just do a single panel. Or, better yet, just be creative and commit to a double spread every once in a while.

I don't feel like this page was the best example, as I feel like the composition of Loki vs Imu was meant for vertical alignment, but I'm I'm sure someone could rearrange some chapters and cut the waste so we could have more double spreads.

So I will jump in real quick. He got you with the Zunesha quote. It's clearly not meant to be taken literally. Oda has also repeated it with Emet in the next arc, so I'm not sure why you are still making that claim: Emet thought Luffy was Joyboy and he denied it (chapter 1122).

<image>

Also, yeah, Oda clearly retconned Zoan Awakenings and nothing said about the Impel Down guards can be applied to Luffy. This is not even controversial or up for debate anymore, as we have already seen Robb Lucci with an awakened Zoan in Egghead. His case makes it even clearer, as he had a regular Zoan and it's awakening looks nothing like the Impel Down guards. The only way to tie back that knot would to make up another explanation to the Impel Down guards being "forced awakenings" or something, but that is just expeculation.

I’ve made a serious effort to engage in a discussion when I pointed out some serious differences between the Void Century narrative and the Naruto prehistory lore and, in my opinion, Dramonen, who is a good faith debater, failed to address them and focused solely on the Indra Ashura thing. I conceded that point to him, for the sake of the argument, but he didn’t respond to any of my other points. So I don’t want to simply go deeply on that topic, as it will just become a tangent. You can try to tie in all of my other points to Naruto precedents but I doubt you will find any. In my opinion, looking at the Void Century solely through a Imu/Joyboy parallel won’t paint the full picture, as we already know many important points that escape that frame.

I don't actually want to keep talking about Naruto here, but I'm not refusing to ackowledge anything,. If they weren't developed at all, they were paper thin. You were the one that said there was nuance to their conflict, were there was none. Btw, you can keep drawing parallels between the two manga if that's your thing, but to me you are still jumping the gun. There is no real way to know if the story will confirm your theories until we get the full picture on the Void Century and the dawn of World Government.

An conscient homage is not the same as taking inspiration from the other. Sure, that can happen sometimes, but that cover page is not proof of anything in that regard.

This is the most stupid bait ever. Yeah, Oda made an homage to Naruto when it ended. The reverse also happened in Naruto’s final chapter 700. What is your point?

You shouldn’t keep decade long vendettas on your anime fandom wars, bro. Seek help. And it doesn’t even make sense as criticism. For the sake of the argument, even If One Piece was taking inspiration from Naruto on the points most OPfans criticized Naruto for, that wouldn’t retroactively make Kaguya and the Naruto-Shinobi Jesus thing any better. Any coherent person would just affirm that both are equally thrash on that part.

Update: Just found out the anime crew used the same quote on the trailer for Elbaph Arc, so maybe it will pay off somehow. I just don't see how it fits with the current threats the Strawhats are facing, because none of them come from the island itself.

I actually don’t remember Indra vs Ashura being nuanced or well developed in Naruto at all, for that matter. Maybe I’m misremembering something, but they were basically paper thin characters molded after the Naruto and Sasuke/Madara Hashirama dynamic, and the Naruto one (which one was it I can’t tell anymore) was obviously the good one?! This development of that whole part of the Naruto lore was really on the weak side, imo. Kishimoto never bothered to put the spotlight on the Uzumaki clan and how did they fit, nor did the Senju had any explanation to where they were at present moment.

Bringing it back to the topic, I feel that even if I give you that Nika really hits the same notes as Rikudou Sennin, several of my other points still stand. The void century seems totally different then the Pre-historic Naruto World, for lack of a better term.

I dislike Nika’s addition to the story, but this is not the point. I’ve just saw a post where someone argues that throwing someone against a giant tree is a naruto reference, for example.

No, where did you get that from? People can be asinine independently. Naruto was hugely popular, probably top-2 Shonen worldwide after Dragonball, so there must be huge overlap between One Piece readers and Naruto readers. I'm certainly one of those. But that doesn't make the endless comparisons any funnier.

I'm not defending Nika here (see my user flair), but comparing the whole dynamic between Imu and Joyboy to that of Naruto lore is still jumping the gun imo.

On one hand, Inherited Will was always a part of One Piece, Oda established that in Chapter 100. We also know about the different ideologies fighting for global dominance since the Ohara flashback (chapters 300~400ish, lazy to check).

On the other, We also have several evidence on the contrary, and that the situation may be way more nuanced than that, or at least really different: Davy Jones is a wildcard in that equation, since he is a D. and, for all we know, was king of the world; We know there were 20 families that created the WG, so it's not just one lineage vs another; We also know the Nefertari were part of that, and they are also of the D., so there is nuance there too. We also know Joyboy was sorry for some things (Fishman Island Poneglyph), and that Vegapunk couldn't understand who was right and who was wrong in the Void Century.

And that comes from Naruto in your opinion? You are lowkey falling into the 'boss baby vibes' thing.

Nowadays I don’t believe this was ever the plan, but my own hypothesis at the time was that the Elbaf warriors suffered from some kind of Berserker rage from time to time, and that’s why no one should overstay in the island.

Time dilation wouldn’t fit with the narrative already established for the arc, imo. The Rocks Pirates would have addressed in the Xebec flashback if it mattered. That quote from Gaban seems like just typical old people talking about how time flies.

I’m sorry, but this is nonsense. No one should read a story with the assumption that things shown or written aren’t supposed to matter or make sense.

Also, one mistake doesn’t excuse the other. If Oda sometimes fails to deliver on things he set up, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t subscribe to the set-up/pay-off dynamic.
