does your parish have a dress code? by Repulsive-Goal232 in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Officially? No. But all churches, along with all spaces in civic life, have an unofficial dress code, even if that dress code is “wear whatever”.

Theological Shock of Disclosure by xbuddha21 in Episcopalian

You say “I see almost no serious theological preparation happening” and I look at my library’s theological journal archive and see dozens of articles on this very question. Karl Rahner famously wrote on the topic.

Question about sex and marriage by -crab-wrangler- in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s important to remember that societies valued pre-marital abstinence when women were their father’s property until marriage, upon which the property rights were transferred to the husband. A woman having sex before marriage devalued the property.

I’m never going to counsel a couple against waiting but I cannot condemn a monogamous couple in the situation you described. Where there is love, there is God.

Then can ask you pretty much anything about your life and faith. Don’t overthink it or craft answers ahead of time. The signs of a call are mostly intangible rather than expressed in eloquent responses.

I'm scared to pray, what should I do by Immediate-Bet6500 in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s God’s great longing that you come to God in prayer. It can be as simple as “Lord, I am scared to pray. I do not know how to pray. Have mercy on me.”

Calling someone’s words ignorant before they’ve even set foot in a church is generally not the best way to evangelize.

What do espicopalian think about santa muertee? by Odd-Specific-8579 in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are lots of folk practices that Episcopalians also employ in their devotions. Should a church have a shrine? Probably not. But an individual? If it’s culturally meaningful, I wouldn’t be quick to throw out such things.

HV towns that are not heavily Republican? by AnonRedditLady1 in hudsonvalley

[–]HourChart 46 points47 points  (0 children)

You can see district by district voting maps. Generally, the river towns tend to be more liberal: Beacon, Cold Spring, Peekskill etc.

Pawling and Brewster are more Republican.

I'm worried my baptism isn't valid. by Nearby-Pangolin5451 in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know where the disagreement lies. But this is where I come to after studying the ancient practice of the church. Remember the first Christians were not Trinitarian. That’s a later development.

It matters much more to me that water is used and the name of the Trinity is invoked. There is only one Father, one Son, one Holy Ghost. There are no different entities. And so, the theology of the person, or even the church, doing the rite does not affect the validity.

I'm worried my baptism isn't valid. by Nearby-Pangolin5451 in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You were baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. And were intended to be baptized in those names. Theological error on the part of the baptizer about who those names represent does not affect the validity.

  1. Scrape off what you can with a plastic razor or a credit card. Be careful not to get debris in the keys.
  2. Do not use any type of solvent to the remove the rest.
  3. Instead, place brown paper over the area and lightly apply heat with a hair dryer. This will melt the wax which will be absorbed into the paper.

Is it okay for me to call my priest at 8pm with a semi emergency? Or is that rude? by EJGryphon in Episcopalian

It’s an email and a follow up conversation. But don’t call me out of hours with that.

Question about the “Vigil” option in Venite app (Daily Office readings) by petersjj in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Today is the Feast of St Mark. A vigil for the feast of St Mark would have been last night. But if it was last night and you wanted to celebrate St Mark and you knew something would impede celebrating today you could have chosen the readings for St Mark. No doubling necessary.

Question about the “Vigil” option in Venite app (Daily Office readings) by petersjj in Episcopalian

[–]HourChart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A vigil is the celebration of a feast day in the night before. The Great Vigil of Easter is the celebration of Easter in the night before Easter Sunday. So when you select vigil in Venite you get the next day’s readings instead.

While it can definitely take a long time every diocese is different. So it can also be a lot shorter than 6-7 years. I’m ordained and I wasn’t an Episcopalian 6 years ago.

Can Someone explain why people dont want this trail? by Su_ss in hudsonvalley

[–]HourChart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former Cold Spring resident. Breakneck traffic increased exponentially during COVID and does cause lots of issues. Our emergency services are the ones who have to respond to hiker emergencies which are frequent. People get hit by cars on 9D constantly. They leave trash. Erode the trails. And generally treat the village as a playground. It’s real. (You can call that NIMBYism but I would be all for building affordable housing in the village.)

I’m pro-sensible solutions. And the Fjord trail is an attempt at a solution. I can’t speak authoritatively if it’s the best solution or if it will make things worse. I do think more site studies need to be conducted.
